Is it ilegal to sell my "character name" ?
This isn’t a “ask A.net for an answer” forum. If you are lucky, a mod may comment before locking your thread.
This is also where the answer is very obvious. If you have to ask about the validity of something potentially shady, then the answer is to not do it.
Most games, unless stipulated, selling anything for RLM (real life money) is a violation of the TOA and can result in a permanent ban of all your accounts. So posting this, Anet might watch you and see if you try and sell anything now for RLM

but I’m not trying to sell for real life money. its for game gold…
and I am asking because Arena Net is very strict, and I know they don’t support this or they would add an option to sell names in the trading post for money, but doesn’t mean its ilegal.

Sorry miss read, thought you were trying to make a quick buck xD
Well, in that case, the best way to find out is to email them. Since only part of the forums is up., sending them an email will probably be the best way to get a quick answer, instead of ppls opinions or assumptions, or waiting to see if a MOD will see this post and answer it.

Thanks, I guess I have to wait, I really wanna make sure before making any infraction, but their support is so overwhelmed right now it might take a while longer…
I can’t imagine ArenaNet would allow such a practice. However, it really doesn’t matter as it would be nearly impossible to “sell” a name. Why? Names are reserved once you create a character with a particular name for “up to” 24 hours…but the exact amount of time until the name is released is unknown. The person who purchased the name from you would literally have to spam the character creator for hours in order ensure the released name did not get taken by someone else.
I’m not sure what to answer, but it doesn’t look like a nice thing to do. Sort-of like buying domain names just hoping someone with money wants to buy them and try to make the most out of the procedure.
It just looks like a mean thing to do. You use the names for your characters because you want them to be named that way, not because you want to make some gold or whatever else through that.
No idea whether it would be allowed or not… but don’t think it would be practical either. If someone is interested into buying a name, it means it’s a popular… and you have no control over when a name becomes available after you delete your character (it’s never right away), so if you advertise it publicly means that everyone will know you’re deleting that char and that name will become available, so they’ll be hammering the character creator to try to get the name before whoever bought it (either because they really want the name or just to grief you/whoever bought it)… and if they do, well, there’s nothing neither he nor you could do.
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.
Of course it is illegal. What a dumb question, nickname is a nickname, you cant sell it because this is PROPERTY OF ANET.

Yeah I understand what you mean about that, but I just tried to delete one character of mine with a specific name and I could create another character with the same name 1 second after, so as soon as I delete it becomes available.
This being said, I could make a specific hour to delete the character so the person who will buy it could get it at that specific time.
Even though yeh, its not pratical I know.

I don’t know about Anet’s rules, but if I saw someone in map chat trying to sell their character name for gold, I’d immediately write an email to Anet asking them to release the name, because you obviously aren’t going to be using it for its intended purpose.
should stay out of the way of those doing it”

I don’t think name squatting or something of that nature would be tolerated by ArenaNet for too long.
Oh wait. Nightmare Court doesn’t.
What are people talking about? People sell guild invites to trim guilds in gw1, people sold their NAMES in gw1, people sold fame by taking people on fame runs in gw1. All of this was for in-game gold and I never heard of any of them getting in trouble for it.
IMO as long as it’s in-game gold for in-game features then go for it.

It becomes available TO YOU – the name is locked to YOU for up to 24 hours. It is not released to the public pool of names when you delete it.
Am i the only one that thinks this is a kitten move?
