Is it necessary?
Correction… I mean more then one time overall.
There are achievements for doing the level 10, 20 and 30 storylines once per race. You can also get black lion keys and other rewards (including some skins currently unavailable anywhere else).
Other than that though I think the only reason is if you want to do the different variation of the story. GW2 was deliberately designed to make different parts of the game separate so you don’t have to do the ones you’re not interested in to access or complete others. Skipping the story won’t inhibit your ability to do other things just like not playing WvW or PvP or whatever.

“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I always do them to the first step of lvl 40 to have the 2 keys you get from the story. There are also crafting material to gain from it so for me it is worth it. I guess if you want all skins from the orders and also the last story quest you will have to make them. Those from the very last quest you can buy from the trading company though.
So answer if you don’t care about the different racial stories or keys, crafting materials, achievements and skins, then you don’t have to do it
I read the question as doing the story many times on one character, which you can’t do on the 10-80 story, which is why the above responses are talking about “always doing” — they mean as they level alts. On LS2 you have to repeat the episodes on the same character if you want to do the achieves. In the HoT story you can do many of the achieves first time in on an alt IF you have first completed the story on one character (I’m not sure if you have to finish the whole story before doing chapter achieves, or just that chapter).

It’s not even necessary to do the story once.
But if you do, there’s some nice rewards to be had, including a couple of blacklion keys, weapon and armor skins only available on karma vendors otherwise, lots of crafting materials, unidentified dyes, and more.
There also are some very interesting storylines to follow in the different story branches that you’ll only get to see if you play through with several characters (just in case you’re interested in that kind of thing).
