It’s around $250 dollars for around 3500 gold. What do you guys think?

EDIT: After I calculated all the materials including the precursor, I spent a little less than 2000 gold. I did however spent some cash to get gold to finish getting all the materials. Everything else, I already had. I even have enough of the other currencies to make 2 more legends, not including materials. Only thing I’m grinding at the moment is the Gift of Battle, if it wasn’t for the reward track system, I would have been done.

Think of it this way. Say you work in real life at a minimum wage of 10 dollars an hour. It will take you 25 hours to buy it. However if you make it in game from scratch without spending a penny, it will cost you more than 25 hours (250$) plus a lot more hours of farming.

Would it be cheaper just to buy all the supplies and craft the major items?

Depends on how fast that you want it ….
If you want it right now then spend the real life money.
If not then just farm and get the gold and items.
All up to you if you want to spend that amount. No one else can tell you what the pixels in a game are worth to you.

For myself, I am spending the time to farm, I am almost done getting the stuff for Bolt (I was lucky and had Zap drop so figured why not go for that one, lol). I have bought gems for other things just not used them for doing this. Time is what I have so I am using time.

I did spent over $250 for gem since launch. I have crafted 3 legendaries overall, but i never covert gem to gold to buy a single legendary.

I will say the crafting process is a game play experience to me. How to plan my materials use, laurel gain etc. I suggest make a plan to the crafting, it felt great when you finally craft one.

Think of it this way. That’s food, rent, going out with friends, donating to charity, buying the monday donuts for the office.
A game is something you are meant to play with one of the goals of that time being the crafting of your legendary or legendaries.
You’re talking about spending $250 on one item for, realistically, one toon.
And then you’ll either want another or get bored of the game.
Make it a goal, make it fun, work on it.

Apart from that if you want to buy the mats and craft it (ignoring those things you can’t buy as you have to earn them from playing) then you’d need to max a craft or crafts and you haven’t said if you’ve already done that or not.

If you look at it in strict Time = Money terms, then it does seem reasonable.

But when you start to factor in other things I think that falls apart. For me the biggest issue is that there’s a lot of other things I could do with the real money and many of them rank far higher than a legendary weapon in my priorities.

I also have a job where I can’t easily take on extra hours for more money and I wouldn’t really want to do that if I could. Meanwhile I’m playing GW2 almost every evening and weekend I’m at home, and that’s getting me gold, materials etc. which can go towards a legendary, essentially without requiring any extra effort.

I’m just over 3/4 of the way through my 2nd legendary and I’ve not had to do anything I don’t enjoy or wouldn’t have done anyway. I might have done things in a different order (I wouldn’t normally do 3 dungeon paths in one day for example, but when I’m already in a willing group and need 500 tokens I’m not going to say no), but it’s still all stuff I do anyway when I’m playing.

(I should also mention that my first one took me a year and a half, and the second has taken me 5 months so far, current estimate is 7-8 in total. If you want to do it quickly it will probably require a lot more farming, which may be something you don’t enjoy.)

So in summary for me it’s much less of a ‘cost’ to make one, because most of what it requires comes down to time spend playing the game and that’s something I do anyway, whereas spending real money would require either arranging to work more hours (which is difficult on it’s own) or taking money away from something else which I would prefer to spend it on.

A skin no matter what game is not worth that much.
If you dont like to play the game and work towards it in the game theres no reason to get it. I dont think you will consider this money well spent in a few month.

Its your money but you should think more about your investments.
Thats pretty much the money for a holiday or a dinner for your whole family x2.
I like GW2 as well but buying a skin for that price is in my opinion dissipation.

Gems to gold is always the best way to get gold if you have a job in a first world country. It is like 7 cents per gold. Farming time + electricity bill cannot compete with it.
But will you feel accomplished if you bought it with gems to gold? That is for you to decide.

If you have $250 that you can just spend at one time on a virtual experience, that’s great for you. That amount of money is close to what I would spend on entertainment for a whole year so I couldn’t justify it personally. Nor would I want to miss the movies, etc.

You’re missing a third option. Not caring about legendaries. lol
You could save your money and just use an exotic, or spend less money and buy the mats for an ascended weapon (assuming you have a profession to craft the weapon you want), unless you REALLY want the visuals for one of the legends.

Is the goal of playing the game to have fun or is the goal of playing the game to have all the best stuff?

If you want to have fun, then paying to skip the game cheats you out of both your money and your fun.

If you want the best stuff, then paying to skip the game still cheats you out of your money (since all you get for it is a digital item), but it won’t harm your fun since you put a premium on having rather than playing.

I have created four legendaries. Three from precursor drops (Dawn, Rodgort, Meteorlogicus) and Astralaria from scratch.

I make my gold from gambling on the TP and from selling mats/drops. I have never paid for items using RL money through buying gems and converting to gold.

I am one of those who likes to work for something and have a goal. With each of them, it took a lot of time and effort. Most certainly I could have made much more money than that at work and just bought it outright without doing anything to get them, but that wouldn’t be worth it to me.

One: It’s not worth spending real world money when I can get these things without having to spend a dime and…

Two: I play this game for fun and working to get my legendaries was fun for me.

So if putting in the time to get the weapon you want isn’t worth it and paying cash for it is, by all means buy it. It just isn’t the thing for me.

Thank you, everyone!

That’s what I needed to understand. In my case, I think I’m better of buying it. I don’t like grinding much and knowing I would have to do this for months, it will just brake me apart.

It’s very unlikely to require months of grinding.

I’m the person who mentioned taking months to make a legendary, but that’s specifically the time it takes me to make one without grinding.

For example when I was crafting the precursor (which is always more time consuming than just farming gold to buy one) I chose to make the time-gated materials, one per day, instead of farming gold to buy them. Which meant the first stage of crafting took 25 days because I had to wait to be able to make them. I also gathered a lot of the materials myself, even ones I could buy from the TP.

Right now I’m at a point where I could be finished already, because everything I need can be purchased from the TP (except obsidian shards which I have enough karma to buy). But I don’t have enough gold to do that.

I could start farming AB multi-map and other very profitable things, playing in the same few areas over and over again. But I hate farming so I don’t want to do that and instead I’ve chosen to wait. I’ll build up Mystic Coins and laurels from login rewards which can be used to get most of the stuff I need, and whatever gold I make while playing can go towards it as well.

I’ve also taken breaks from working on it, both times when I wasn’t playing because I wasn’t at home (the longest being 2 weeks) and times when I was playing but I didn’t feel like doing anything that would contribute to the legendary – for example I spent a few weeks exclusively playing low level characters, doing story missions.

So in summary it takes months to make one if you just play normally and wait for the materials you need to turn up. The upside to that (for me) is I don’t get burned out or sick of the game, because I’m not doing things I don’t want to do. And of course it didn’t cost me real money which I’d much rather put towards other things.

Just remember that there is this thing that happens in people’s brains called “Buyer’s remorse” where someone is overly stimulated and excited to get something, then after a short time regret their decision.

Personally I would not spent 250 on a legendary, even if it sounds reasonable as a “its only a few hours of work at your job” thing.

250 can buy you a new video card, or a months worth of food for yourself, or countless other things that can simply have more “meaning”

If purchasing the legendary will fill some missing void in your life, then do it, because it will have meaning to you. If you want it because it is shiny, that is a dangerous slope to continue down.

Unlike a shop in town, where you can return something, this will be pretty much permanent.

It very much depends on what $250 is to you. For someone to whom spending that much on an item in the game means having to tighten their belt, pay rent late, or experience some other worry or hardship…its a bad idea.

Some people wouldnt notice the expenditure. Theh spend more on a single pair of shoes that they rarely wear.

Essentially, if your discretionary funds allow for it, why not? Otherwise, dont go hungry or into debt for an in game item.

I think you are robbing yourself of the reward if you buy it outright.

You can usually save about 25 – 35% of the cost , which is usually at least 1000g (or $100) if you instead buy or craft the prcursor yourself (depending on which one it is) and then use your own game resources, namely ~480 Spirit Shards, Gift of Battle + Exploration and ~ 480-580 Obsidian Shards to craft it yourself. Most of the other materials must be bought from the TP though, farming them isn’t feasible in an ordinate amount of time, it is set up like that on purpose to keep the economy flowing..

Gift of Battle is 8-10 hours in WvW, I have done it mostly on a sunday afternoon, it can be quite fun and you can get lots of loot, ranks and marks of battle for cheaper ascended trinkets on the way.

Obsidian Shards and to a lesser extent spirit shards are not difficult to farm, but can be a little tedious as your best option is to run some SW event maps and chest trains.

Most people will have a gift of exploration sitting in their bank (for the first two legendaries at least) but after that it can either be fun or a nightmare depending on how you feel about exploring the world on another character.

Personally, I think a Legend is something you should gradually work toward but not precisely focus on. It’s too expensive to be worth the gold in most cases, and is for the most part cosmetic. If I had interest in legendaries, I’d do a little bit of it at a time to prevent burnout.

I crafted a Bifrost a couple weeks back, starting the Legendary Crafting process from scratch it took me about two days (maybe 4-6 hours of actual gameplay, the rest just waiting for a few basic mats to come through on the TP), although of course I had a lot of the materials in my bank to get that far (particularly the Gift of Exploration and Battle). I also had a ton of Laurels which I converted into the T6 mats I needed. But overall I spent less than 500g on the entire process (opportunity cost on the mats I had not being counted).

But basically, plan ahead, keep collecting the bits you need over time, and it may be far cheaper than you think. You might at least be able to save some money by crafting the precursor, selling it, and buying the final piece, if you don’t want to hassle with the final Gifts needed for the Legendary itself.

I find it interesting that every time the idea of legendaries as a prestige item or achievement comes up on this forum people say it’s meaningless because you can buy them with real money, and seem to be under the assumption that a lot of people do get them that way.

And yet we’ve not had anyone come forward in this topic to say they did it, or even that they know someone who did it. I know there are people on the forum who have spent hundreds, even thousands of dollars on the game so I would have thought if people were regularly buying legendaries at least some of them would be here.

I have seen a lot of people mention spending gold (for mats) in the process of crafting their legendary.
Gold and gems are interchangeable.
Gems can be purchased for real money.
A lot of people buy gems (or the game would be unfunded or underfunded).

Even if not even one person ever outright bought a legendary with real money through the gem to gold exchange, some portion of the player base has doubtlessly paid for their legendary in part with gold gained from converting gems that they paid real money for.

I don’t oppose the gem/gold exchange. In fact I think its one of the best business models for an MMO that I have seen.

But without difficulty beyond the ability to endure grind longer than someone else and/or augment one’s in game time with real money, I don’t see there being prestige associated with legendary weapons.

From experience, no.

You still have Map completion to do, I can make Eternity and have been able too for a long time because I thought I could buy mats to craft it cheaper, but map completion has held me back for weeks now and I’ve only bothered to do 1% since.

I don’t have the time is precious perspective, mine is more I play games for fun and to wind down, not to grind after I’m done grinding my real job.

Try thinking of this way…
$250 cash you could have used on the next best thing in your life.
A legendary isn’t something that is tangible and can be used. $250 is.
Legendary weapons have the same stats as ascended, but at 3000% the price.
Ascended you can transmute into any appearance you wish. A legendary can as well, but what is the point in doing that if you’re going to transmute?

By all means support anet with purchases, however remember anet has loaded it in their favour.

When you buy gems wholesale it automatically increases their value. The math may $250=3000 gold, but it will never work out that way. Your first purchase of $100 for 8000 gems and then converting will alter the exchange. The more you do this, the more you will get less gold per gems traded.

I haven’t practised my maths in sometime on a equation like this, but ultimately it will probably cost more in the order of $350..also when speculators see someone is cashing in 16,000+ gems they start hitting the market with their stores which is hard to predict because the Market is across all servers, nut just EU or US

But my advice would be buyer beware, you can effectively have the same power on a purchase for much less and have real world money at your dispose for real tangiable items.

Worse than people being able to buy them with cash money, which would at least go to ANet, there are people out there who buy them using in-game gold that they earned through the Trading Post.
