Is it worth restarting to change race?
Depends on how much you value the birthday gifts. In some cases, it might just be better to get a character slot. What are you using in your other character slots?
When you say 3 years, are you coming up to the character’s 4th birthday? It may be worth waiting until Aug 28th to see what the 4th birthday present is before you decide

I suppose I could just use a different slot. Although when I got the sylvari to 80, I’d probably delete the norn. Would I lose anything important?
Aside from birthday gifts, another potentially important thing you’ll lose is that toon’s crafting disciplines. If he’s got 500 crafting, it’ll be expensive to re-level those.
You’ll be unable to use any soulbound items and you will lose any progress that is specific to that character such as map completion, story completion, crafting level, and you won’t get any new birthday gifts until another character reaches the same age.
So nothing you can’t get back, but it’s something to think about at least. If you have another slot free I’d definitely recommend making your new character first and then deciding once you get them to level 80 whether you want to delete the old one.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
That’s a decision you need to make for yourself.
I mained a Guard for 3 years… mostly happy, but never satisfied with what I could do no matter how many builds I tried/experimented. About 6 months ago I decided to try a Warrior and fell in love; making him my new main. It took me a couple months to get my new main mostly where my old main is. Now, he’s further along than my old main is for exploration and story. I’m happy with my change, but it did take a lot of time to catch up. I get that a profession-switch is a bit different than a race-switch, but I think it’s close enough to relate to your woes.
Does your patience compliment your desire for the change?

P.S. I agree with what the others above have said: if you do make the switch, don’t delete your old toon. At the very least you can park ’em at a harvesting spot and make ’em a farmer.
Thank you all for the help! I’m going to test around with different races in the mists and see how I feel! (And maybe try out warrior…)
I have 3 guards (1 charr, 1 sylvari and one asura), so i don’t see your issue
No but really i mean why can’t you have two guards? And i don’t see that you loose anything by making another one well unless you want to use the racial armor but then again make another and save the first and now you can dress up both as you wish
I’ve always regretted deleting characters. I wouldn’t do it. Just start a new one.
I have a norn guardian who I’ve played for three years now, but I’ve always wanted him to be sylvari. Is it worth restarting to change my race? What will I lose if I do?
i suggest make a new character but don’t delete the old one, keep him/her as a bank character. I played since beta, and made my 1st character on 1st day of release, it was a charr engineer…..after 3 months i tried out every possible armor out at that time on my engineer, and hated all the clippings and butt capes, and none of them looked cool enough, so after his 1st bday, i deleted him and made my asura engineer, which is now still my main character, I enjoy my engineer way more after changing race…..but….
If i could do it again, i wouldn’t have deleted my 1st character, as i made it on day 1 and now i’m missing on his bday rewards…..I should have just bought an extra character slot so i could have kept him. Mistakes were made, lesson learned.
