Is lone wolf plausable?
You can solo all PvE and Personal Story(except last mission). In WvW you would have problem to do anything alone, but you don’t need to join any groups or parties. You can as Lone Wolf ;P just meet and join to help some zerg when it’s taking a keep or tower and disappear in Mists when siege is done.
There is no way to solo dungeons so you need a party, and without them your equip and money-making oportunites are much less.
Well despite being in a guild I’ve played pretty much solo in PvE all the way up to lvl 80 (including the personal storyline) and have had no problems. The fact that you don’t need to form a group to tackle PvE content which requires more than one player makes it very easy to play solo if you wish.
I can’t comment on WvW as I’ve no real experience and as you’ve already mentioned some content such as dungeons will necessitate a group.
In summary yes it’s very plausible to play GW2 as a lone wolf.
On a separate note anyone who thinks someone is less capable of playing a game due to their gender is, in my personal opinion, pretty foolish.
You can solo and be a faceless zerg just fine. Dungeons and maybe sPvP are the only thing you have to team up for, the rest of the game is fully accessible to play however you want.
I solo’d my first character and maxed it before I even considered joining a guild. Map completed it too, everything except Arah story.
Solution: Join Dragonbrand. Join Blades Of Oblivion clan. We rule!
I disagree with all of the above. Team play is where it’s at, I find solo play so mind numbing that I stopped exploring after my first character, the rest having a beeline explored to the dungeons. I’d say the real problem lies in the fact that you haven’t met any half decent people yet. My guild had a few girls on teamspeak at one point, and there was no problem. Don’t miss out on the best part of the game because of a handful of people. Once you find an active, friendly guild you will enjoy it so much more.

I am not part of a guild, and have 3 level 80s, and have done many of the dungeons with a PUG. I’ve never found a reason to need a guild. I DID make my own personal guild, for two reasons:
1. So that I could get more bank slots for free: I just made a guild bank and since I’m the only one in the guild…..
2. So that people would stop seeing that I’m not representing a guild and whispering me to join theirs.
@Revan,
Check your PMs :-)
@Dancin,
What everyone has said is true. Dungeons and sPvP require teams. Depending on class you can roam WvW solo avoiding foe-zergs. Also any class can defend keeps/towers.
@ANet,
It makes me sad that the last mission in personal story requires a group.
(Old whine topic, but still…)
I agree with all of the above – you can solo most things and join random groups (sometimes with little/no communication) for other stuff, dungeons in particular.
But if your experience with that one guild is the sole reason you want to I’d also encourage you to give other guilds a try. They’re like any group of people – some good, some bad, and once in a while you find one that’s great.
I’m female too and although I don’t have voice chat (entirely due to a lack of microphone which I plan to fix soon) I’ve never made any secret of it and never felt like it affected how other players treated me. As a matter of fact my guild leader is female and she’s the one everyone goes to for help and advice.

I understand people can play however they want (or at least try to), but why play a Massively Multiplayer game when you feel more comfortable playing alone?

Because you like the game, lol. I play solo most of the time, a lone wolf as you called it, and I’ve been playing it since the beginning. Pretty much everything in the game is soloable, except for Dungeons and some Champion mobs. Sometimes I’d tag along with a group of people and then I’d just go my own way. Nobody’s forcing you to play with other players if you don’t want to.
Being lone wolf is possible. I belong to a huge guild with over 300 members, but I barely know my guild mates and I do the pve alone. I have only once did dungeons with my guild mates, which was fun as they knew that dungeon well.
Like others have commented, it is possible to do all the pve map zones + personal story alone, except for the final mission: Victory or Death (Arah dungeon story mode). Theoretically Victory or Death is also soloable. I managed to get pretty far with my warrior, but finally after 4+ h marathon I gave up. So I recommend joining some team for that final mission. Also some of the Orr map temple events can be real pain to solo. I call that the “hard mode” in pve. The Risen often spawn faster than I can kill them + you have solo kill that champion / veteran boss alone. I have more often failed than succeeded such occasions, but I have 100% Orr map completion on both of main characters.
I often do WvWvW, usually every evening. I play for Blacktide, so my experience has been from euro tiers 1-3 Supposedly the most difficult opposing worlds in the game. Enemy has been outnumbering us 2 to 20 (yes, sometimes we have just 3 people on the map zone and I can see dozen enemies not so far from our gates, ouch!). I have respect for my opponents. They have better coverage, better participation, good gear. Some of them are true experts in using the siege and have huge organized parties or effective 2-5 roaming groups. But in a fair fight they almost always lose, because I specialize in playing unusual combinations (people don’t know how to counter them if they have never played against such build). I am rarely ever in any party. And even if I am in party, I have never used voice chat there (funnily when I was playing Guild Wars 1 guild-vs-guild in in top 100 guilds, we always used voice chat). Despite lacking the obvious advantage of being in a team and voice chat, I have been able to get 1:5 to 1:15 kill rates in WvWvW (1:15 means 15 kills per death). I don’t like zerging and I don’t play cheap gank characters like thief (but playing thief in pve is kinda fun, it is so strong and always able to escape). You can e.g. capture NPC posts (supply, Harathi, Skritt, Quaggans, Hylek) alone and thus help your world. And if you see enemy players who are alone, you can run after them, immobilize and kill on spot.
So lone wolf can be both fun and effective.
I hope I didn’t sound egoistical. I am also eager to help new and old players. I have shown some people how to get 100% completion on some map zones: how to do the difficult skill points and vistas. So if you need help, I can do that on Blacktide (which is a full server at the moment, but the queue should be very short). Doing pve areas together can also be fun.
