Just wondering if there’s a situation where jumping in combat can be useful.

Not really. A recent developer post said that it is intentional that you cannot use most skills while jumping.

The only thing I can think of is if you want to run away from combat, and want to jump onto a ledge, across a chasm or off a cliff in order to avoid or get away from enemies.

It depends on exactly what you mean by that. There has been many times when I’ve had to jump over stuff while fighting. Sometimes when kiting, other times just to get out of the way of an attack.

Jumping over certain obstacles can help to use mob movement AI against them. I guess taking that to an extreme could be considered exploiting, but other that that I can’t think of any particular use.

sometimes I like jumping in combat just to gloat to the AI. that’s usually right before I get knocked back like a kitten.

jumping should be considered a free evade/dodge.

jumping should be considered a free evade/dodge.

Just what the game needs, bunny hoppers. Also that would circumvent the whole endurance mechanic that limits your dodging.

jumping should be considered a free evade/dodge.

If it was free, why would you use dodge?
If it wasn’t free… can you imagine waiting for the recharge during those jumping puzzles?

Is there a Jump booster to increase range for a short duration? Haven’t seen one; that would be useful!

Jumping in combat can be useful against the AI.

For example I discovered whilst doing Dark Reverie that if you jump up onto even a relatively low platform all the enemies (except the turrets) suddenly stop attacking you. The first mushroom on the far side of the floor area puts you about shoulder height on the sylvari NPCs, just above head height on the hounds and well within reach of the bigger enemies but they’ll all suddenly stop and walk away as if you’re not there.

And like other people have said the NPCs won’t jump so it can be a great way to put some distance between you or block their attacks.

But against other players I don’t think it has any use.

When my Charr jumps in combat, his armour lifts up enough to frighten the life out of his opponent. Thus, it is useful indeed!

A dodge roll (dodge+jump) will take you somewhat further than a normal dodge, but the utility is obviously very situational.

You can jump during the animation of a ranged attack in order to shoot over some obstacles that might otherwise block you. Rocks and the like. Very situational and can be difficult to time properly, but possible. The other day I was using it to shoot enemies through a gap in a broken wall.

As mentioned, you can also jump onto inaccessible ledges and the like to get enemies to drop aggro on you. If you’re solo, that’ll make the enemy leave combat and they’ll regenerate their health, so not very useful in that situation (unless you’re just at risk of dying and want an easy way to end the fight), but if you have a pet / summon or are playing with other players the enemy will simply switch targets to something it can reach rather than leaving combat, so you can use it strategically in those situations. Useful in mixed groups of ranged / melee enemies as well, you can jump on a ledge and get all melee enemies to disengage so you can pick off the ranged enemies more easily.

Also nice for placing stuff like Ranger spirits in places where they can’t be killed but still having them apply their bonuses to you.
