Q:

I’m not really all that good at the jumping puzzles and vistas, but it seems like they are major part of the game. I find that the camera gets in the ways sometimes but mainly its just me not being coordinated enough to go through it. I spent an hour for a part of my story because of this. I got knocked off the wall so many times and then i finally died and was able to move on. And then spent the next 30 minutes or so trying to do the rest of the puzzle. I’d hit something invisible and wouldn’t be able to jump. Does anyone have any advice for me on this, because I’m seriously thinking of putting the game aside for this and other reasons. I came over from GW1 and thought this game was amazing, but I find myself getting frustrated by the game. I expected it to be challenging and that fine, but sometimes it seems like its overboard.

Anyhow, my main issue is the jumping and if anyone has some advice on this, I’d be grateful.

Lots of toons and so little time :D

My wife, kids, and I have all worked on jumping puzzles together. they aren’t always easy and the difficulty varies for each of us. The best advice I can come up with off the top of my head is…

  • If you need to make a mostly vertical jump, jump straight up without any other movement first—sometimes you hit your head before getting the required height and need to find an alternate path.
  • Line up your jumps as well as you can ahead of time using mouselook—if I know the camera and my character are lined up, I should land on something that is occluded by my character.
  • You can move in any driection mid-jump to correct, you just need to be fast to catch the mistake.
  • Swiftness makes you move faster in every direction—you don’t get any extra distance and it can be harder to make some jumps as you have less time to react.
  • Don’t panic. Failure happens, and the moment you start getting emotional, you’re probably compromised your ability to to complete the next step.
  • For many jumps, you can jump straight up and, at the peak, tap forwards to make it to the next platform. This reduces the risk of a huge overshoot of your target if you are mostly going up.
  • Some jumps are just that difficult to make and repeated failure is the norm.
  • If you play multiple races frequently, you will need to adjust your perceptions to make sure your expected jump distance is appropriate for the character you are currently playing (Norn might be able to leap one norn length, but an asura can leap 4 asura lengths, etc.).
  • Walkthroughs are available online. If you can’t make a jump, it may, in fact, be impossible and actually be a decoy path.
  • Most vistas don’t require many tricky jumps, just a litle rock climbing.
  • Sometimes you just need to walk away from a puzzle to get a good camera angle to see what to do next.

Thats all I can think of right now, hope it helps.

Well it’s hard to say what your issue might be I mean some of them are challenging and even a little frustrating but I find myself able to get past them usually with a few tries. I’ve hit a few hit boxes that were a bit large so I was standing on thin air but haven’t seen any that made me unable to jump.

I’m not all that good at jumping puzzles myself. Took me at least 2 hours to complete some of them, but the difficult puzzles are usually optional. Vista jumping puzzles are not the hardest of them, and if they are, they usually have more than a vista (sometimes they have an achievement and/or a chest associated with it).

A few things I learned from failing over and over again is positioning and how you jump. If you can’t complete a jump, try to go at it from different angles or positions. That has sometimes been quite helpful to me. Another thing is how you jump. I find that, for me at least, move jump and jump move gives slightly different results. Another thing is that long jumps are usually easier with a speed boost, while shorter jumps are usually easier without.

Well, those are the things I do to try to overcome some of the harder jumping puzzles. Hope those helps you.

Elsdragon is right, you do get different results from jumping then moving and moving then jumping.

But if you think some of the earlier ones are bad, there is a really obnoxious one called Vizier’s Tower in The Straits of Devastation. For the most part is really easy and obvious, but then you get to the top of the jumping puzzle and get the achievement and you notice there is still a vista and skill point above you.

Have to jump onto a tiny piece of coral and then jump higher up the coral before finally getting to the top of the tower. It wouldnt be so bad if you didnt have to do as much every time you miss the coral.

I wouldn’t have thought jumping was too central to the game (you can choose to avoid it much of the time, or do what I do and just come back later if it’s a vista or something you can’t get). It can only take one evening of frustration to put you off though, so I sympathise! One word of advice: don’t join the Durmand Priory. They’re great fun, it’s true, but their exploring through old ruins full of traps is really testing my dodging and jumping skills. Who knew the glorified librarians would have some of the hardest missions? (For me anyway!)

Thank you all for your replies. They are very helpful I will bookmark this post for references to the advice you’ve given me. I did join the priory unfortunately on one of my main characters and now I’m regretting it, but oh well. I’m new to the jumping stuff, this is the first game that I’ve played that has it, so its an adjustment. I know it will take some practicing. Again, thank you so much for you advice and replies.

…And then spent the next 30 minutes or so trying to do the rest of the puzzle.

If it makes you feel any better, I lost count of the number of times I fell into the bowels of the Asura capital trying to get that one jump on a root on the bottom level. Despite the (incredibly frustrating) nature of some of the jumps, that’s what makes it fun: I get a little disappointed when a vista doesn’t require at least a few minutes of thinking.

When trying to climb a steep piece of polygon, I sometimes just spam the jump button and my toon sometimes make that double jump.

Other than that, my only tip for jumping is to de-summon your minions if you’re playing necromancer by eating one of the transformation candies.
