Played GW when it first came out and lost interest. Hopefully I can recover my old account and enjoy both these games.

Any tips to a newb?

Avoid these forums like the plague.. Seriously, half the threads on here are just angry gamers bashing the game (no offense, there are many legitimate problems that people point out on these forums).
And also never forget that you should be playing this game for fun! If you ever find yourself completely bored with the game, do not be afraid to take a break – that is the best part about no sub-fee. I have taken several 2-week long breaks throughout my time with guildwars2 and when I come back (whether it be with a new patch or I’m just bored with everything else) I tend to get that feeling of newness and freshness again, it’s great!

1. Find a class that fits you. Do a little research on professions if you don’t have a clue

2. Go to Lion’s Arch. You can go to Lion’s Arch from any of the starter cities. Thus, you can also go to ANY race’s starter area the moment you leave the tutorial.

3. Explore a bit. While your personal story is nice, try to visit other race’s starter areas and various other zones on your own. This will also make sure that you are always at or above the content you tackle.

4. Upgrade your gear on your way to 80. I updated by gear at level 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 80 and my weapons at levels 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80. Don’t forget about your underwater weapons.

5. Gather. Even if you DON’T choose to craft. It’s a nice bit of money on the side.

Lastly, do your dailies very easy to acquire gear using the laurels you gain and provides a bit of experience.

Welcome to GW2.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”

Take is slow, this game wasn’t meant to be cleared in a month, just keep that in mind, pace yourself and you’ll have fun. Don’t give in to buying gems for gold, buy it only when you think the company deserves the support from you.

seriously, if you don’t plan on doing wvw, take your time leveling.

The maps in this game is ridiculously detailed and awesome. Take the time to explore

I just started a few months ago, so far i have learned that if you are primarily going to do PvE content be a warrior, and if you are going for WvW a Thief is a good idea.

Welcome.

Tips:
-Dont expect this to be WoW. Dont expect the same features, experience, etc from other MMOs. Buy into what the game is…
-Level a few characters. Each class is REALLY REALLY different than anything else.
-level a crafting profession at the start.

Karma is as abundant as air, and as useless as the Kardashians.

The first thing I would do is get into a good guild, preferably one that is nuby-friendly. Do some research on the server you’re on and look for a large, non-specific, non-elitist guild and rely on them for advice. The social aspect of this game is pretty lonely without a good guild behind you.

Secondly, explore. This game rewards you for exploring everywhere. When you’re leveling up, explore to find resources, POIs, dynamic events, jumping puzzles, etc. Jump into WvW and follow around the commander icons, or jump into the heart of the mists and check out all the skills, traits, and weapons your class can use.

And welcome to gw2

Welcome to GW2.

If I was to start again I think I would roll 5 different class/race combinations and take turns in completing home cities and starting areas relevant to them. By then you would have a much better idea on which class/race suits you.

Once you finish your starters and have unlocked your weapon skills I would take each into WvW and see which you prefer there.

After spending some time in WvW I would take each class into SPvP and play a few matches/tournaments. You get to see the classes as they will be at 80 and which feels comfortable.

From the above you should then be set to move forward and know which class or classes to progress with. Nothing worse than levelling a class to 80 and realizing you picked the wrong class.

Big tip – If you like jumping puzzles they are much, much easier on smaller characters like Asura.

Go vitality then power (equipment + traits) for stats on any low level class.

Always use a apple/wrench icon.

You will not die (or hardly ever die) and kill everything faster and get more loot.

As someone said above, I would avoid this forum. It will make you jaded without ever having set foot in the world. You want to be in the players helping players section. There are some great threads there, here is one that is a sticky that is useful.

1. Form your opinion based on facts and your personal experience and not with second-hand information!

Reading these forums you will see a lot of lies and tinfoil hat conspiracies.
It’s best to take most statements with a grain of salt unless solid evidence is provided.

2. The combat!

While the ordinary holy trinity isn’t in the game, this game still has its three pillars.
Control, Support and Damage. While you may specialize in any of them, you will still be expected to fulfill each role, regardless of your build. Control and Support are both always more important than damage. Damage should be contributed while focusing on either Control or Support.

The sooner you realize this, the better player you will become.

3. Teaming up!

Finding a group without a global LFG system in place requires a bit of work and patience. Luckily there’s http://gw2lfg.com/ – A great deal of players use this to find groups.

-Players of different realms [servers] can team up in dungeons.
-American and European characters are unable to play with each other.

If you’re feeling lonely in the zone you’re in, use guesting to temporarily visit a high-population realm to test your luck there.

I just started 2 weeks ago. I made 5 different classes I though I would enjoy. I brought each one up to lvl 18-20. At that point I choose the one I enjoyed the best and havn’t looked back. Someday I can pick an alt if I feel like it. I have read and listened to every quest and story. Don’t rush things is my advise. Enjoy the game for all it has, and you will have fun.

Look up the crafting choices and level your crafting with your character. Especially if you want to make your own armor/weapons. Otherwise you’ll far outlevel what you can make, quickly.

Save your coppers. Every single one you can and try not to waste any. Coin is super difficult (for me anyway) to come by.

Have fun! The world and areas are huge. There is so much to see. Take your time and enjoy the beautiful world created for us to play in.

There is no reason to rush, if you’re not familiar with the dynamic leveling system, look it up because because being max level doesn’t mean anything when you go into a lower level zone.

This thread makes me proud to be Tyrian. You’re all playing so nice. lol

Most of it has been said already but I’d love to stress joining a guild of like minded players. It can make all the difference in the world.

A good guild can make even a mediocre game better. Think of how much a good guild can do for you in a good game.

All you need to do is run around and press 1, then 1, then 1, and 1, and 1, until…. 2 appears!! once you get 2 the excitement ramps up!! press it!!! eventually 3 will show up then you can press that one and so on and so on. But dont forget about 1, you had lots of history with 1.

1 is always super dependable, not like those uppity threes and fives. Sometimes I’ll call upon 3 or 5 for help, and they’re all like “Man, I’m tired. Why don’t you go ask 1?” 1 never is too tired to help.

My turret is so much better at this game than I am.
