Just bought the game! in need of help! :)
Which server have you chosen? It’d help if you were on the same server as the people you play with after all. Though it isn’t necessary with guesting, but still preferred I think.
Early on you’ll want to listen to what the NPCs are telling you and follow it. Do your personal story quest but also do any Heart Quests and Dynamic events you come across. Take your time to learn the mechanics and get a general idea of the game works.
Then when you’re feeling more confident you can start going your own way. You could actually do this now, but it would just make you more confused.
You can also ask in Map chat or on here if you don’t understand something. People are generally pretty friendly and willing to help if they can.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
You can add me up in game i am willing to answer any of your questions.
Goodluck!
GW2 is unlike any other MMO you might have played. There’s much less structure to the progression so you can pretty well just wander around and see what happens.
The ‘hearts’ are a bit of a crutch for people who miss the old quest system, but the dynamic events is where it’s all at.
I would recommend that you have a play in the starter zone to get used to your character a bit, then travel to Lion’s Arch and the other cities. You will pick up a lot of free XP just by exploring those. (Waypoints give significant XP)
Make sure you get used to using the Trading Post instead of just vendoring stuff you loot(and don’t just accept the offers, use the bid system). Some of the stuff you find will be quite valuable and only pennies offered. Gathering is a goldmine, crafting is a gold SINK – be careful.
I remember when I started, the intro gameplay kinda threw me off. it was more what I was accustomed to (with the “you should go here and kill that” sort of thing), but it was not similar to the rest of GW2, so it was disorienting for levels 2-5. Some things I recommend for a starting player:
- go to the Game Menu (top left of your screen), select Options, and check Autoloot
- kill some mobs. make sure they are within a couple levels of you or you will have a hard time doing it. If the corpse glitters, move near it and press F to pick up the loot.
- Check your inventory periodically – are there any armors or weapons that are better than the ones you currently have equipped? equip them (right-click the item, select Equip)
- find a merchant (on the map they look like coins). click Sell Junk. select unusable items and press Sell (unusable would be items for a different weight class than you, or duplicates of the same item type, or weapons for other professions). and buy a copper harvesting sickle, copper logging axe, copper mining pick, and 2 crude salvage kits. Equip the sickle, axe, and pick. use the crude salvage kits on salvageable items you find and whatever items you want to (I salvage all white items, but not blue or green. yellow and orange are tricky, but you have a lot of time before dealing with those)
- gather from most nodes you see on the map (they will look like a tree or rock or plant). Early on, you may way to sell the materials you gather on the Trading Post (some of them are better to sell to a merchant, do price-checking), but you could also save them and use them in a crafting profession to gain more exp and new items.
