Just got the game
Guild Wars 2 is a great game and people with always complain about something. Yes the community is still very active and there are lot of people playing. Didnt really play wow so can’t comment on the necro/warlock comparison but necro is a fun class.

Welcome to gw2. First of all, it is an awesome game. The forums you’ve been reading all the bad stuff about in no way reflects the vast majority of players. Many of the people are here to voice their complaints and and frustrations to the devs and others. (Although there is much constructive criticism, its largely buried in the negative. ) and yes its a bery active community and growing larger by the day.
Necros? Not sure how they work in WoW but its a really fun class, I have one, and can be veey useful in PvP and WvWvW. In the end though play what class/race you think you’ll have the most fun with and throw out everything you know about WoW. None of it will apply here.
Otherwise find a guild, explore, try different classes amd have fun!

Warlocks and Necromancers are vastly different. I tried making a Necromancer as my first character because I enjoyed Warlocks in WoW and Necros/Rits in GW1. I ended up deleting the character before I hit level 30.
The game is quite fun though. The people who complain most are people who have likely played since launch and it’s been a long time without much significant additional content (mostly polishing of game mechanics).
I doubt you’d burn out though, with Living Story 2 just around the corner.
To be honest, this forum has a lot less negativety then other mmos and their forums, let me tell ya haha. I almost subscribed back to wow.. but I have a feeling this game is going to be just overall alot more fun. Wish it was finished downloading already!

Yeah it may be a while before I hit max level anyways.. plus, from what I have read, this game is its most enjoyable during the leveling up process.. which is exactly what I was looking for. I used to love wow just for leveling up really, was never a hardcore raider or anything, but now it seems like wow and every other mmo pretty much makes it so you reach max level fast as hell for the end game content.. not the biggest fan of that.

…Wellllllll.
I’d say it’s not the case in this game, but I’d be lying. It’s stupidly easy to hit max level. However I think you might have a good time exploring – it still takes a while to go around to all of the zones and explore the maps and see the landscapes. Not to mention the story isn’t too bad either for a MMO, and Living Story 2 is just around to bend to extend that story experience.
It’s not like after you hit level 80 the devs designed the game to funnel you into dungeons or anything that is the equivalent of “raid” content (there’s no true raid content, but some stuff gets kind of close). It’s a great game for those who enjoy casual and some more difficult gameplay and has a pretty good way of having both doors open at the same time.
It all just boils down to the game needs a serious expansion for the veteran players though. You hopefully won’t feel the stress that the vets do and if you do, well the vets complaining about the game now are likely to have completely abandoned the game.
you just joined at the wrong time. you are going to have a horrible time lvling your new character with stagnant progressions and skills/utilities locked away behind events you literally cant do because of your level and making cash has just been made harder
if you joined 5 months ago you could have bought 1k gems crafted to lvl 65 in a day then had fun to lvl 80 with all your unlocked skills and abilities.

^ Don’t mind this. Please don’t. Half of the fun is learning the game and exploring the world! I would just advise you though when you’re leveling to be THOROUGH when you see Heart Vendors and keep an eye out for masterwork karma items they sell that are better than what you have equipped. Do not be frugal with your equipment while you are leveling (well, okay, be a little frugal but don’t like try to hold onto the same equipment for 20 levels) because it will hurt you with frustration in the end. Stay in your appropriate level content and exploration and leveling will be a cinch. It gets a little boring after a few alts but your first character should be an enjoyable experience.

If you’ve never played the game before, unlocking the Traits just might be an enjoyable challenge…. If you look at it as a chore then it’s going to be one. All your other complaints are from the view of a speed rush leveler…..I hope a new player does not approach the game with this attitude.

This game is a blast. I am a casual player and have been playing since day 1. Pay no attention to the diaper babies on these forums that just want to cry about something. You will love the game. It is very active and always people to play with.
Always up wind from my prey. I want them to smell my farts!

Correct me if I am wrong here, but isnt that how Traits were unlocked in GW1? (To be fair, it has been AGES since I played GW1)

Yes, doing quests was the way to unlock skills in GW1. It was recently added to GW2 with the change in the way trait points where awarded. You also have the option of buying them with gold too. However, if you are doing map completion on each zone, and taking your time and enjoying the game, you’ll unlock those traits no problem. I’ve unlocked a few on my alt, and didn’t even realize it.

Ah, I see.
Well, I am trying to complete all my zones for the rewards, so, I guess that will kind of fall into place organically.
few things i’d like to add on to other posts
- people are always going to complain. at this point they just seem kinda spoiled, it’s easily one of, if not, my favorite game
- from what I hear it’s a lot different from other mmos, so going into it comparing it to say, WoW might not be the best idea.
- as has been said, leveling is decently fast in this game. i got my first character to level 80 in about ~1-2 weeks of playing about ~4-6 hours a day, for comparison.
- I don’t know much about WoW, but from a WvW point of view, necros are useful in large groups for their hard hitting AoE’s in the form of wells, and in roaming, I believe they’re most commonly built for putting out tons of conditions. I don’t play a necro so excuse me if i’m wrong, that’s just what i’ve seen while fighting with/against them
Yes that is correct about necros. PvP and WvW is where they shine, but in PvE and group dungeons and events they are less than useless.

I just came over from WoW a few months ago, and I have to say having played mostly Monk, Lock and Hunter there, that My favourite is Mesmer, totally different from anything Wow had to offer, I tried necro, but could not get into it….. something missing ..
Elemental is a lot of fun and has some great flexibility if new, being able to change on the fly between the 4 “specs” helps a lot !
Be aware if you do go Ranger , it is nothing like hunter from Wow, pets are not active the same way ! ( I made that mistake)
