I just got guild wars 2 and it’s downloading as I’m typing. I was just wondering if there were any classes that are op/standout and which ones are seen the most or least and why?

If you look hard enough you can find a thread complaining about how powerful any class is with the exception of maybe engineers and necromancers.
When I play I tend to see an unusual diversity in classes, like most mmos you usually see 1 or 2 classes a lot more than the rest, but here the diversity is pretty good.

Welcome to Guild Wars 2!

Professions are, surprisingly, pretty evenly divided, however there are probably more Guardians and Warriors and less Engineers and Necromancers than other professions. Warriors and Guardians are relatively easy to play (especially Guardians), while Engineers and Necromancers have their share of balance issues and are slightly more difficult to play.

I found Ranger and Guardian to be the easiest professions to solo-level in PvE, if that’s what you’re looking for for a first-time player.

Oh btw I’m elementalist, I love the class, I have no idea what the alleged OP skill or unfair nerfs are, I just play and enjoy it, fairly certain elementalists have more skills than any other class.

Good news, I’ve previously played rogue/warlock in WoW and those types of classes in other mmos and i was thinking about running a necro for first time, are they ABLE to own/do great or are they not quite up to par?

I main a Necromancer, and personally… I love the class. However, there are a lot of things that ANet does need to work on with it, but it’s definitely worth giving it a try. I personally go for a Dagger/Warhorn power build, and I find that (for me) it’s the best Necro build when it comes to solo-levelling. But there are a lot of great Necros here who have made builds for all kinds of purposes. We have a lot of potential, we just haven’t reached it yet (however, there have been a lot of great videos showing Necro’s dominating in WvW and PvP).

From my experience necros are pretty good in PvE. I don’t do PvP or WvW so I couldn’t give you an opinion on that. They are fun in PvE. I tend to take a common profession and use uncommon skill sets just to be different. For example I’m running a dual dagger Elementals. You see it from time to time but not often. I have a dual pistol thief which pretty much takes the meaning out of playing a thief but I like the challenge of it. Oddly it’s pretty good in PvE. Also once I started running around with it a lot in Quennsdale (human start area) now I am seeing them all a lot.

@OP
This mayhem you can expect with the friendly GW2 community. we disagree all the time and thats cause the game is this good. The game doesnt have a class thats standing out to the others. All are very good balanced in my opinion.

There are some classes that are easy to master, but hard to excell. There are some that are hard to master but if you do your the best. The last is an in between category. I’ll explain why per class.

Warrior: heavy armor, high damage. is very easy to play specially if your used to be melee. but in the end game you are just a melee dps that can handle themself. good but not much more (in general there are some very good warriors)

Ranger: medium armor, Good damage when ranged and good CC. Like the warrior you can handle yourself with ease but you find yourself just okayish at the end.

Thief (medium armor): The assasin or ninja. Though good at range, best at melee range. but keep in mind hit and run. If your ok with the style you can do great things both on damage and in support. But in a game that is allready a lot bout dodging and surviving itmight be too much.

Necromancer (light armor): Great at conditions and using minions for CC. There is not much more to tell. If you like that they can be awesome. If you find the perfect combo you are really good, but in my opinion a bit old school and boring. But thats me.

Mesmer (light armor): in character the same as the necromance, but harder to master. The use of clones and misleading makes it very difficult for the enemy to defeat you, but it is also very disorientating. They lack a lot of power at lower level wich is unlocked with grandmaster traits at level 60. This makes them challenging to master but if you get them to the end they are very fun.

Guardian (heavy armor): By many considered to be a minor version as the warrior at first glance. but the ability to support makes it the best healer in a game that doesnt have healers. The fact that they are heavy armor and prefer melee range makes it a very interesting profession with many layers and very versatile

Ele(mentalist) ( light armor) and incredible squishy. It is hard to master or even stay alive at first. Most survivabillity has to come from traits and skills. But the amount of damage is huge and if you get one to the end and get it geared up it is awesome. The problem is getting there.

Engineer (medium armor): I call them the special op’s. They are actually easy at the start but hit the tricky part at bout level 40. The reason is that they can do almost anything but you need to use kits to do so. Each kit is totally different from the other and you have to learn them all to excell. Bascily this is 6 classes in one. If you got it right in the end you are awesome but its hard to get there.

You said your an ex-wow player. Welcome. Keep in mind this game is designed to be different then any other mmo. WoW set the standard for most MMO’s so you might be bewildered at first cause it is so different. good luck and if you want to know more just ask.

According to the forums every class is under-powered for everyone who plays it and every one is over-powered at least in certain situations – usually when the person posting has just been up against an experienced player in PvP.

In reality it seems pretty evenly balanced once you know what you’re doing BUT some are easier to pick up and arguably easier to master which often makes them seem more powerful at first glance.

The warrior for example is a relatively simple class – their special skill is one extra attack and most of their skills are either direct damage dealers with other effects on the side or buffs that allow you to take or endure more damage.

Whereas the elementalist, arguably at the other extreme, needs to use their special skill to keep swapping between 4 sets of weapon skills to be effective and relies on a lot of conditions (debuffs), AoE effects and other mechanics to reach their full potential. They also start off with only fire skills, which are their high DPS “glass cannon” set which makes surviving harder at lower levels.

Thanks for all the info, already liking this community, after some more reading i am now trying to decide between the thief and mesmer as they seem to fit my playstyle. I’ve always been one to do the one-shot type of kills (not literally one shot, you know what i mean) and tricking the enemy is always fun. Im always more focuses toward pvp. I’ll probably end up lvling both classes not sure which one first though. How do these two classes differ with dmg output, being able to kill an enemy, and survivability?

Like I said it truly depends on the level. The thief shows its potential really soon. It is easier to level in my opinion then a mesmer. The mesmer however is blossoming late on the track but does that then big time.

The thief and the mesmer are bout the same on survivability. The thief has higher (medium) armor but for the high damage has to go close where they hit the hardest. The mesmer has very low armor, but can stay ranged and has a good cc to take damage away.

The cc for a mesmer even works in PvP and WvW (wich is a hybrid between PvP and PvE). it is for a human enemy’s not possible to detect a mesmer clone from the real mesmer. The only way to do it is to understand that clones are npc’s and recognise the difference in way of moving and reacting. The bets PvP mesmers can mimic an npc perfectly to fool you endlesly.

The thief uses stealth as its main weapon to sneak up on you unnoticed, strike quick and hard and then retreat in stealt.

In the end, the mesmer is better in survivability and the thief is better in killing the enemy. Both are difficult to master but can be lethal if done right.

Final advise: Get playing and see for yourself :P
