So I’ve been playing GW2 for 6 hours with a Ranger Asura and I got to level 7, am I leveling too fast?

Basically I’m following the green light on the map and trying to do the hearts wherever they come up, plus I’m engaging in dynamic events (I don’t know if this is what I’ve been participating in), basically when I’m walking I get a flash saying “There’s an event near by” I go there and engage. Am I doing it right?

It’s a different than your usual MMORPG so I’m a bit confused.

I only have 2 silvers and 53 coins, is that normal for my level? I can’t afford anything in the Trading Post. Should I have more money? If so, how to get more money? Should I be wearing all my equipment at this stage (chest, gloves, boots…) because I only have a couple of those items, most of my kit is still missing.

I also have a lot of heavy armor that I cannot wear and I can’t sell either, tried on the Trading Post, didn’t let me sell them. What can I do with them?

What do I do with all these crafting materials? I know I will be able to craft once I’m level 11 but for now what do I do with all these items? Will I need them all when I hit lvl 11?

Thanks.

As a rule of thumb, you can expect to gain 1 level for every hour of play in GW2. (This will be faster at earlier levels as doing events and the Personal Story give a lot of XP.) Your playstyle is very similar to mine, so it’s as “right” as any other playstyle is.

You are a bit poor for your level, but that’s not surprising if this is your very first character. At your level, I’d just focus on using whatever gear drops for you (or from the Personal Story) rather than buying anything from the Trading Post. Take this time to experiment with all the different weapons for your profession too.

Some players like crafting, while others hate it. In the end-game, crafting is the only way of obtaining the very top level of gear (Ascended), other than being very, very lucky with drops, so if having BiS gear is something you like to do, then yes, consider saving your materials for crafting as you level.

Otherwise, selling all those materials is a great way of getting you money. Make sure to buy harvesting tools and harvest everything you come across too; Copper Ore currently sells for about 80+ copper coins. That means you can earn 2 silver just from harvesting one single Copper Ore node. You mentioned you’re an Asura too; harvesting Herb Seedlings in Metrica Province (your starting zone) can get you Vanilla Beans, which sell for 3 silver each.

Your doing fine. Leveling can be pretty fast if you do a bunch of events. It will take a long time before you are able to make good money. Low levels make only a few copper per event, but your costs are lower compared to gear, repairs and waypointing for higher levels. As for gear, when I was leveling I only got new gear every 10 levels and even then that wasn’t really necessary.

Gear you don’t need and isn’t worth selling on the trading post, just sell to any NPC vendor. If the trading post won’t let you sell it you probably got it as a karma reward. That is only good for salvaging or selling. Crafting mats, I sold on the trading post. I didn’t bother to level crafting till I was level 80 and some people never do.

Ninja’d by Zaxares. Like he/she posted, you level much faster at lower levels – which only stands to reason, as you need more XP to level the higher that you go.

I’d be more worried about your total coins if your Ranger isn’t your very first character, but it sounds like you’re just starting out. The coins will come in more the higher your level is. Just be patient – sounds like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. Just relax and have fun playing/leveling/etc.

Those materials you gather are a good source of cash at your level, not so much the drops.

BUT whatever you sell, make sure to sell it on the TP if you possibly can because those ‘Merchants’ will rip you off good. Some of the things you find and gather are worth a LOT more than they offer.

Since the rest of the folks pretty much covered most on the other questions, I’ll just address these 2.

I also have a lot of heavy armor that I cannot wear and I can’t sell either, tried on the Trading Post, didn’t let me sell them. What can I do with them?

You should be able to sell. Just make sure you use the correct boxes when listing the items. For some rarer items you may not currently have the cash to cover the listing fee. There is also the option to salvage the items for essences of luck (which over time will increase your odds of getting better drops) and composing materials which you can sell and turn a profit as well. You can also sell to vendors, but generally the trading post offers a higher value. The way I do it is sell trophy items to vendor, any useable gear on the trading post or salvage and sell the mats.

What do I do with all these crafting materials? I know I will be able to craft once I’m level 11 but for now what do I do with all these items? Will I need them all when I hit lvl 11?

You don’t need all the crafting materials that you find. Save only those for professions you intend to learn on your character. The game is designed to allow the possibility of learning all on one character, with just 2 being active at any given time, but I always found it better to learn just 2 that suited a class best, while still having the option of learning the rest on classes that could benefit from them, such as tailor on a light armor wearing class. Your ranger is best suited learning Hunstman, which crafts bows, horns, torches that a ranger can use, and Leatherwork for creating medium armor. For these you need wood, metal, leather and some cloth. You could make some money selling food mats or gem orbs until the time comes you decide you’d like to learn the Chef or Jeweler crafts too. I’m commonly clearing my bank of cooking mats. Just last weekend I made 60g selling stacks of ingredients while keeping only those needed in recipes I make.

Thank you for clearing up the crafting confusion I had.

So my priority professions should be Huntsman and Leatherworker. This should cover all my ranger needs, correct?

I can still learn other professions but I can only have 2 active professions at any given time.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Just in case you didn’t know, you can click the little gear at the upper right of your inventory panel and select Deposit Collectibles. That sends all the crafting mats to your bank. When at the bank or any crafting station (those have bank tabs on the left side of the panel), you can click on the icon of a grid of dots and go to your collections inventory.

The mats stack up to 250 in the collections tab (more if you eventually buy expanders) so it will be a while before you need to decide whether to keep or sell unless you are going for quick cash.

Huntsman and Leatherworker will definately cover a significant portion of your needs, but not all of them. If you wanted to craft a complete set of gear for your character, you would also need a Weaponsmith (swords, axes, daggers, and greatswords.) and Jewelery (amulet/rings/accessories). Cooking would allow you to craft some food which would give you various bonuses. For my first four characters, I just specialized in two crafting disciplines each until I had them all at 400+.

Also, there is a secondary type of “currency” called Karma. You can spend this at all of the heart-NPC’s for gear upgrades as well as with special Karma-vendors. In World vs. World, as an example, you can purchase Invader gear which has Power + Toughness + Vitality (depending on your level).

One extra tip: purchase some cheap food from some of the merchants as they will also give you bonus XP and help you level faster.

Good luck and welcome to GW2!

You probably shouldn’t spend your karma on heart vendor gear unless you really like the look of it and it’s not available on the Trading Post. When you’re 80, you can very quickly get a full set of exotic armor in Orr (assuming the Temple with the stats you want is open) for 252K karma (42K karma per piece). Sorry if the numbers are off, I don’t retain numbers well, but it’s in that ball park. Karma used to flow like monsoon rain but these days it’s slow to accrue and thus worth saving up for necessary purchases.

I purchased a couple of items with my Karma points but that was before I read somewhere that I need to save my KP to the very end.

I already asked this question and took the advise and tried to sell them at the trading post and local merchants but I just can’t. I have a set of heavy armor that is unusable by my class that I can’t sell anywhere. I can only destroy it. Should I? Because it’s taking a lot of space in my inventory, around 15 items.

You should be able to TP or merchant that heavy armor that’s taking up room in your bags. Out of curiosity, if you hover over one or more of the armor pieces, is there any text saying the pieces are soulbound? Or account-bound. That would prevent them from being sold. Also…what is the name on the armor? The only other thing I can think of is that it might be the set of “heritage” armor from the Heroic Edition of the game.

Equipment you buy from karma/heart vendors cannot be sold to merchants, sold to the trade post, shared with your other characters, or salvaged for materials. This is to prevent easy and guaranteed ways to convert karma to coin.

There is one viable use for such items rather than destroying them: collect up to 4 items of the same quality (i.e. all blue, or all green), and put them in the Mystic Forge. You will get a random item of the same quality and slightly higher level requirement (with a small chance of getting an item of the next higher quality category).

While the new item may not be useful to you at all, you will be able to sell/salvage this one. (Unless you have the bad luck of receiving another soulbound item; what comes out of the Mystic Forge can be from any loot table, including the karma verndors’ selling list.)

The Mystic Forge is normally located in Lion’s Arch, but is currently temporarilly stalled at Vigil Keep. It’s very close to the hub of asura gates from all the racial capital.

Repeat: Crafting is a gold sink.

Anything you can make by crafting can be bought more cheaply on the TP. In general, anything you craft will cost you more in materials than you will ever be able to sell it for.
(Glitches in the market sometimes reverse that temporarily)

Anet have tried to ‘fix’ that by making Ascended stuff untradeable but until you get to endgame that won’t be a concern (and not even then really)

Is this true?
What good is crafting for?

At the moment, I don’t have the materials to craft anything. I’m chopping all trees and all plants on my way to quests but I’m not focusing on it. Should I give it more time or what?

EDIT: just read this topic in “Crafting” category about whether or not crafting is worth it. And I have to say, there’s a lot of mixed feelings about it, I don’t know who to believe .

I find being able to craft my own items very handy at times. I used my time in game to build up a stock of materials and when I had a bit would craft in various areas. I do not regret ever leveling up a craft. I did not use crafting as a way to avoid other forms of leveling to 80 so the money was not an issue.

ufodisko – players will ALWAYS have mixed feelings about crafting. It’s just the nature of the beast. I will say that you’ll get more XP from discovering a new recipe/item than you will from either making wood planks from tree logs or ingots from pieces of metal ore. You will need to refine something in order to craft from it, though.

I leveled my 80’s by completing each zone to 100% and mixing in story quests along the way. I started by completing each races home instance map level 1-15. And then did all the 15-25 maps and so on

I found getting chef to max was useful. I didn’t find getting the other professions to max before I was level 80 to be useful. Once I got to level 80 and I had the gold and mats needed, then I leveled all the other crafting, mostly to get the achievement points and the title. Now since I’m crafting ascended weapons, it’s useful. Before ascended gear, it was convenient but not necessary.

If you aren’t going for ascended gear and don’t care about the achievement points or title then you can skip crafting. It’s a net gold loss to max them since you can buy much cheaper on the trading post while selling your mats as you go along.
