It apparently sells for like 40g+ which for a low level like me, seems like a lot. I got it out of a loot bag from my personal story.

Now, the dye itself looks amazing, so I wouldn’t mind using it either.

I guess what I’m asking is: Is 40g a lot for a max level? Could I easily get that at max level? Because if I can, I’ll probably just sell the dye now and then buy it after reaching max level.

But then again, do I really need gold while leveling?

40g is always nice to have, it’s about one day of dungeons without any exotic drop if you’re doing a tour. Most people I know have between 100 and 500g, and they are considered average. You really don’t need gold for leveling, I would use the dye and get gold from other things. But both choices are doable.

I got one about 2 years ago. I gave it to my daughter. I have not had another since. (And I opened nearly 300 unidentified dyes when the dyes became account bound.)

Better sell it so you can afford good gear, then you will be able to farm out one in a day ^^

Sell it. You are still a low level and 40g is an enormous amount of gold that can get your first character fully geared and still have enough gold left for a sandwich. My rule of thumb has always been to favour efficiency more than cosmetics, at least when you’re starting your adventures. You can always go to the tp later and buy that dye once you hit lvl80 and start making more gold. But as of now, you need that gold more than a dye that holds nothing but cosmetic value anyways.

I’d say keep it – you should be able to make more than enough gold through story and leveling to gear up when you hit max level, so that shouldn’t be much of a worry, and at least you’ll be set if for some reason the price spikes later on.

Six of one, half a dozen of another. You usually make enough playing to gear up anyway. It’s a good amount of money to start with, but when will you need that amount of money.

Either way, it doesn’t make that much of a difference. Nice to have the money now, but not necessary. Nice to have the dye, but not necessary…and you’ll eventually buy it anyway most likely.

Ask yourself this: in three months, will you be happier being able to afford a ton of little things? or having access to the darkest black in the palette across all your toons?

Alternatively, ask yourself: if you got 40g gifted to you, what would you spend it on? blow it all on the one, highly-coveted color? or get some minis or a fancy skin?

Sell it. Its nice to have some gold for a start.
Later when you will be able to farm gold effectively, you can buy it off the TP.

I use my Abyss dye in about every color scheme on every character.

One potentially helpful way to interpret these answers: There is no wrong choice.

You can always make 40g another way later on. You can also buy Abyss dye later on. The only question is which you want now, long term you can (and probably will) have both.

Personally I’d use the dye. I got Abyss early on and I used it and I’ve never regretted it. But then I knew I wanted it as part of my main characters colour scheme, and after they became account bound I’ve used it on many of my others too.

I say either use it, or hold onto it. If you’re just starting out, what are you going to do with 40G, exactly? You can’t really invest it in gear until you’re max level, and you don’t really need a lot of gold on your way there, unless you want to get into crafting or something. (Which I wouldn’t recommend anyway, since I had fun saving that until I had a healthy stock of materials.)

If you want the black dye option, you can start getting all the bang for your buck right away, and it’ll never go away. If you just want gold, it seems unlikely that the price of Abyss will have dropped by the time you reach level 80 and can see which you’d prefer.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend selling it now, then buying it again later, due to the trading post tax. Even if the price stays the same, you’ll be losing 15% of it to the TP fee.

Place the item into your bank.

Make the decision at a later time.

The dye will still be there when you are ready to decide.

I remember opening an unidentified dye drop around 2 weeks after game launch, and it was an Abyss dye, Being a new player and not realising what this dye was, I used it, only to discover later what it was worth. And yes, I regretted it.

It is one of many dark dyes, and can look bad on some low and mid level armour material, and it gets rather boring on higher level armour. Even now, I rarely use it, preferring midnight red or midnight ice if I want a dark dye. Oh, and I had it drop only once more and sold it.

So, my suggestion is sell it and put the gold aside for when you need to buy level 80 armour/weapons. At that point, you will make 40g in no time if you really want it. Meanwhile, if you want a dark dye, there are plenty others at a fraction of the cost of Abyss.

it is far better than abyss in my opinion (really dark and black …)

and if you dont want a real dark black color then pitch dye is a very cheap (20s) color that is very similar to the black dye

if you really want it later you can easily farm the gold with dungeonruns in 1-3 days depending on how much/fast you farm it

I’d suggest you sell it and grab 200 gold asap, so you unlock gold related achievement. Then blow your money any way you like it :P

When you will be 80, your exotic equipment will cost you around 40 gold if I remember correctly. You can also buy all common dyes for very low price (few bronze or silver) like I did and still keep almost everything you got from selling.

Use it. It’s a good color to have unlocked and you can make 40g relatively easy when you hit 80.

Or sell it now, then buy another one when you hit 80 and save up 40g. There’s really no wrong choice.

Use it. You can easily make 40g back, but the price of Abyss is at the mercy of the community and whatever patches Anet has in store for dye later on.

Plus, the dye will most likely be much more expensive by the time you reach 80. Use it now so you don’t have to pay more for it later.

40g is pretty easy to farm once you are max level, so I’d use the dye now since it unlocks for all of your characters and is one of the best dyes in the game.

You can always sell it and buy the cheaper alternatives like iron dye and midnight ice.

This. for my armor, midnight ice is actually DARKER than the abyss and lacks the blue hue that it gets when applied to metallic armor.
