Knight's or soldier's
Don’t do it!
You’ll need zerker/assassin/sinister/viper for raids most likely.
Two words: Enrage. Timer.
IF you really need a “middle of the road” set for open world, stick with exotics. You don’t even need asc here anyways. So the insane cost is pointless.
As for your “balance of playstyle” thing.. Gear has sod all to do with that. That is 99% influenced by trait/util/weapon choices.

Uh. Well, I have played one of my guardians in knights gear for ages. I have never had any trouble with her.
The good thing is that if you don’t like a stat set on Ascended changing it to another is possible and not overwhelmingly expensive.
You can also consider mixing different set trinkets.
The substitution of offensive stats with defensive stats (mostly toughness) will give you a little more wiggle room to survive when raids to occur. I imagine once each boss’s mechanics are learned everyone will lean towards offensive gear.
Personally, on my fractal guardian, I use Knight’s armor with Nomad’s trinkets. I’m able to keep 100% protection uptime for my party while stacking and I can facetank bosses 90% of the time.
I can only imagine Knight’s armor being more DPS oriented if crits are involved, which may be good for Guardian given the crit-proc traits. Soldier’s doesn’t have precision IIRC, and based on speculation from the devs when talking about raids and the meta, the Power stat may not be as viable in raid dungeons.
Ok, this has been all very helpful guys. One more question though. I’m about to craft my ascended soldiers chest piece. the last part i need is the 3rd damask patch for the insignia. Should I actually make the soldier chest, i invest in buying the knight’s insignia instead 1st?
