Q:

I’ve been playing this game for about 7~8 Months now, and ever since the very beginning I was wondering how could it be that I’m hardly ever lagging in this game even though I live so far away from the server [Israel]

But yea, the day has come, I’ve began lagging like mad the last 2 days :|
I can barely play PvE now, not to mention sPvP and WvW are impossible …

Tips?

Here are a few things you can try.
1. Go into your video settings and crank down the video settings.
2. Your server could be experiencing a lot of new people, which can lag it.
3. Your computer could be getting old. I don’t know, however.
4. When was the last time you restarted your computer? If you don’t already, you should restart it at least every week. This keeps the computer from overloading.

Possible causes of lag:

  • There is some issue with Anet’s network client code.
  • Your system has some sort of connection issue to your network that is causing packet loss or constant interruption. This is quite rare but possible.
  • Your local network is over saturated. Highly likely if someone on your network is streaming media, downloading large or numerous files, etc.. Much more possible if everyone on your network is connected to your ISP connection via wireless (wireless only has so much bandwidth (usually less than a Gigabit to share for all connections).
  • Your local wireless network is being interfered with by other wireless networks nearby. This is VERY possible in a crowded apartment building or dormitory setting. Even with modern WiFi standards that support multiple channels, there is only so much wireless bandwidth available and separate networks competing for the same frequencies cause data bandwidth to be wasted trying to negotiate overcrowded available transmission frequencies. While data transmission will NOT be halted or interrupted, it WILL be delayed (thus causing gaming lag). This is the most likely cause of local lag and often overlooked by many gamers (that continue to blame a game server for their problems).
  • Your wireless router (or wired router) has a configuration that is causing some sort of data loss or transmission delay or is in some way defective.
  • Your connection to your ISP is somehow diminished in some way. This could vary from intentional throttling by your ISP to some hardware issue or configuration or even a deteriorated wiring connection (that would likely cause intermittent connection issues, not actual delay, but COULD be seen as delays under certain conditions).
  • Your ISP could be intentionally (but maybe mistakenly) throttling your data connection to the ANet servers. This issue should be discussed with your ISP and often requires a request to remove the throttling or a different tier of service to eliminate the throttling. This has become more and more popular with ISPs as a method to reduce costs. This is a VERY likely scenario if you see your lag only during specific times of day.
  • Some OTHER internet equipment in the path to the ANet servers is causing packet loss or is throttling your connection.
  • There is some issue with ANet’s ISP.
  • There is some issue with ANet’s server connection.
  • There is actually some issue with ANet’s network code.
(Note that the last 3 would likely effect EVERY player connecting to those specific servers and the last one and first one would likely effect every player period).

If it just happened suddenly it sounds like a problem in your connection.
Go to speedtest.net and see how your values are, specially the ping since is often overlooked.
