Hi all,

I’ve recently joined GW2, but I’m seeing a lot of foreign language in my chat box. I don’t mind especially, but I thought I’d joined an English language server (Piken Square) and I have the option checked to ‘Show only English’, yet I’m being flooded by French!

The “Show only English” Feature is depending on the client language, not the chat language. It´s the best you can get at the moment.

Piken Square is a European server, so it’s to be expected that you will hear many different languages playing there.

There’s two things you should be aware of here.

1) The language tags on EU servers (and especially the assumption that untagged means English) are not strictly enforced rules. You can speak any language on any server, you’re just less likely to find anyone who will understand you if it’s not the official language.

This means that in practice many ‘English’ servers actually cater to people using a variety of languages, especially when they have other factors that make them appealing to people from all over Europe or the world. Piken Square for example is the unofficial role-play server, so that will draw in people from many different countries.

2) Anet recently introduced something called Megaservers which basically means all servers share maps. In theory it should sort you according to your home server (and other factors, like where your guild members are) but it doesn’t seem to be working properly at the moment so everyone’s jumbled in together.

The option to show only your language in chat was a quick (hopefully temporary) fix to this, but it’s based on the language other players use for the client. If they choose to see text in-game displayed in English but then speak in French you’ll still see their comments. And apparently the localisation isn’t great so a lot of non-English players do set their client to English because even if it’s not their first language it’s easier to understand than a bad translation.

Weird. I hardly ever see anything but English on Piken.
