Hey guys! Plannig to buy a new laptop for college and gaming. I’ve set my eyes on MSI GE40 20L due to budget but if you guys have better suggestions, the max budget is about $850. Here are the specs of MSI GE40 20L:

CPU: The latest 4th generation Intel® Core™ i5 4200M 2.5GHz Haswell Processor

OS: Windows 8.1

Memory: 4GB DDR3, slot *2, max 16GB

LCD Size: 14" HD+ (1600×900) , Anti-glare

Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT750M 2GB GDDR5

HDD: 750GB SATA

Optical Drive: SuperMulti

Audio: Stereo.1

Webcam: HD type (30fps@720p)

Wireless LAN: 802.11 b/g/n

Bluetooth: 4.0

HDMI: 1(v1.4)

USB 2.0 port: 1

USB 3.0 port: 2

AC Adapter: 90W

Battery: 6 Cell

So will this laptop be able to run GW2 on high settings? If so, what’s gonna be the fps? I mostly do PvE and some PvP but currently not doing WvW. Oh and i almost forgot, i’ll just upgrade the ram to 8gb if i will buy this laptop. Thanks in advance guys.

For 850, I suggest a Y50

899, sure but its 40 more and you get the following upgrades for that 40 bucks

i5 dual core to an i7 quad core(really needed for this game)
GTX750M to a GTX860M, thats nearly 30% faster.
1600×900 to a full 1080p LCD
750GB HDD to 1TB Hybrid SDHDD (8GB SSD Flash in the HDD)
4GB of ram to 8GB of ram
MSI to Lenovo(Formerly IBM)

IMHO Y50 is a better buy.

Desktop: 4790k@4.6ghz-1.25v, AMD 295×2, 32GB 1866CL10 RAM, 850Evo 500GB SSD
Laptop: M6600 – 2720QM, AMD HD6970M, 32GB 1600CL9 RAM, Arc100 480GB SSD

y50 is definately the better pick in that budget; theres hardly any better hardware available for laptops, not counting models with 2x GPU.

I have a lappy with i7 + GT750M gpu. It runs GW2 pretty good, as long as i dont go over medium details. Recently i tested the game with only the integrated intel 4600 graphics too, and for this test i turned on all settings to maximum, resolution 1920*1080, but no supersampling.

For the test, i was logged in around a quiet place, with just some NPC’s and mobs on the screen, forest environment.

Integrated Intel 4600 scored a whopping 15 fps average.
The nVidia GT 750M did better, with 24 fps average.

So quite a large difference, but still both unplayable.

Now, with the gtx 860’s extra power, the framerate might be around 33-36 fps, if the driver and cpu were the same. Playable, yes, but in group play would get quite slow. Not to mention the very high heating, i7 cpu’s generate heaps of heat.

Bottom line: With the y50, one should be able to ejoy smooth gameplay, with medium-high gfx settings. Some sort of laptop cooling base is highly recommended tho.
