should I make a last name for my character (charr warrior) and if so how many players actually put a last name?

Lots of people do, but it depends on the degree of role playing or immersion you want in the game. Characters names range from frivolous to lore appropriate. So, it’s personal taste.

Yeah, pretty much this.

For me, I enjoy playing characters that I can take at least a little seriously—that’s why I deleted Poot Poot Mcgee in favor of Soren Kharksson.

This is my theory. There seems to be 2 main types of players. One has characters that have a back story and a personality. The character is having the adventure and the person accompanies him. The other wears their characters like a suit. They experience the game but its more like reading a book, it’s more distant. So the first gives the character a real name and the other gives the character a ‘handle’. A non serious name.

So OP, whatever name you prefer depends how you approach the game.

there is another reason for people having last names. That is due to the fact thakittens extremely hard to find a non used first name without having to use numbers instead of letters .

thanks for the replies I decided to give my charr a last name because I am more of the type of player that likes to “be” the character

Everything said above is true. Ultimately it’s a matter of personal taste. Some people want to match the lore for their race, some never use last names, some give the same/similar last name to all their characters so they can be easily recognised, some use a last name only because the firstname they wanted was taken and they didn’t want to change it. And so on. Whatever you do you’re not going to be the odd one out.

But if you want to match the lore there’s a few things you should bear in mind for charr specifically. There’s no specific pattern or meaning to charr first names but there is for their last name. It’s always made up of 2 words (always written without a space or hyphen), one of which is the name of the warband and the other usually reflects their personality or role within it. As far as I can tell there’s no rule on which way round the words go, but if one is a noun it always comes second.

So for example we have the Fierce warband made up of members like Bonwor Fierceblade (warrior), Pyre Fierceshot (ranger), Roan Fierceheart (monk) (this was GW1) and Gron Fierceclaw (assassin).

As an example of the name going the other way around Rytlock Brimstone is part of the Stone warband.

Alternatively if charr leave or loose their warband they become gladium and lose the last name. If they join another one they add a new name. Since our characters spend most of the game acting independently you could always make a charr with one name and claim they’re gladium.

BTW other races in brief:
Asura and sylvari don’t have last names but do have nicknames or titles which can go either before or after their name.
Norn and Humans have family names inherited from their parents (humans use the same as their parents, norn often use the -son/-dottir format), but might not use them or might use a nickname or title instead.
