Hello, probably someone else already has seen some of my posts about the same argument…the fact is that whenever i think i’ve found my perfect profession…i always change idea!
I am trying professions for ofer 4 months…and i’ve made so many characters i couldn’t even count them (over 15 for sure).

I understand asking people’s opinion about two or more classes will bring me nowhere, that’s why i’ll ask you to answer to these questions to help me decide:

1) Wich is the profession(s) you’d like to play with in a dungeon?
2) Wich profession(s) you think is/are easier to play in PvE and why?
3) Wich profession(s) is/are more rewarding for the skill you show with them?
4) Wich profession(s) is/are the most difficult to play?
5) Wich is the profession(s) that,in your opinion, shine over the other in PvP?
6) Wich profession(s) can draw the aggro on itself/theirselves the best?
7) Wich profession(s) has/have the highest dps capability?
8!) Do you think people should play the profession based on how them like the design (without even playing the game) or based on their ingame preferences?

The 8th question is the most important: when i started downloading the game i took a look at the professions, and my favourite ones,in my 1st impression, were the thief and the mesmer, however while playing i started thinking how it’d be if i chose another one…and then it started by “professions depression”.

ATM,i’m not excluding any class.(it’s the 1st game where the warrior looks interesting!) However i’m in serious trouble deciding wich one should be my one.
I’d be very happy if you could share with me your opinions, have a nice day and thanks for reading.

Yeah,i’ve tested that,and i except most people will answer this…what i find annoying of that build is…that in difficult dungeons mobs should be able to 1shot minions ;__;

Hey Butter! I’ll try to make this one short, lol:

  1. I like my staff elementalist, but I like having at least 1 guardian in the party. I also see a lot of thieves, necros, and warriors, not so many engineers, rangers, or mesmers.
  2. Warrior and Guardian
  3. Elementalist and Engineer
  4. Ranking: #1- Elementalist and #2 (tie – Engineer and Mesmer)
  5. Don’t sPvP, but from what I know, Guardian, Thief, and an occasional D/D Elementalist
  6. Elementalist, lol. Really, there is no strategy out there right now that will control aggro
  7. Thief or Warrior? Don’t know. Is there a DPS meter for this game? Ranger might even be competitive once it’s fixed.
  8. In-game preference. You’ll have your preferred amount of positioning, dodging, and button-pressing, and you’ll prefer some jobs (DPS vs. heals) over others, and the design descriptions can’t tell you that. Even members of the same profession with different weapon sets (i.e. staff ele and d/d ele) or builds (stealth thief and death blossom thief) play completely differently and fill different roles. From what I know about your gaming preferences, you’d hate being a staff elementalist because it is very team-supporty. Try, like, a warrior with a greatsword and dual swords – good mobility, maybe good DPS?

Another thing you can do is roll a character, get through the intro quest, and go to the Mists to try out lvl 80 builds before you start investing time in leveling. Sure, it will be a while in PvE until you get to 80, but it will give you an idea of how your fully developed character will play. Play at level 1-29 is not very characteristic of how the profession plays at level 80.

That’s what i do,i see the class works fine in the mists, then i start to level it a bit and…pfft…maybe i should try a new one!
Then i go to the mists and i repeat the above. x.x

From what i’ve seen, having a minion (works with necro, not ranger) and dodging,or “forcing” a minion/pet to attack will draw the aggro to it/them.
Probably this is why necros are so popular…i never see a necro with less than 3 minions xD

Aww, yeah, the low levels are kind of boring.

Maybe find a larger, active guild (or at least find friendly people on your server) and party up with people who are leveling alts? Things seem to go so much faster when there’s a team, plus then you can take on the more difficult DE’s for the exp and money rewards!

1) Wich is the profession(s) you’d like to play with in a dungeon?
I roll an Ele, I’m best with it and don’t ever want to be the reason why we constantly wipe. At least with my Ele I know I did my share.

2) Wich profession(s) you think is/are easier to play in PvE and why?
Depends on your style… if you just want to AoE spam DE for levels then Ele and Thief are likely best. If you want a class to tank mobs then Guardian is easier to stay alive with.

3) Wich profession(s) is/are more rewarding for the skill you show with them?
Not sure I understand the question…

4) Wich profession(s) is/are the most difficult to play?
Personally Mesmer, I couldn’t keep my character because as far as I leveled (18) I was still taking 2-3x as long to fight because it just didn’t do damage. Then again I loved melee which just wasn’t rewarding at all apparently so…

5) Wich is the profession(s) that,in your opinion, shine over the other in PvP?
I don’t do PvP (or WvW)

6) Wich profession(s) can draw the aggro on itself/theirselves the best?
Ele, at least in my experience I’ve had mobs chase me down even with warriors and guardians hitting it. Wasn’t my entire leveling experience but once I hit 60+ and started getting gear to compliment my specs I couldn’t get left alone.

7) Wich profession(s) has/have the highest dps capability?
Depends on how you’re willing to play. Anything can be made into a Glass Cannon in this game (aside guardian I would say) so whichever you’re able to learn and maximize the skill set for.

8!) Do you think people should play the profession based on how them like the design (without even playing the game) or based on their ingame preferences?
I chose all my professions of interest before the pre-purchase edition was announced and have had to redo my plans from such time several times over due to rebuilds and balancing. Ele has been my main since March – however I really wanted to Melee Mesmer and had to drop it, so just depends on if you enjoy it after trying it out.

1) Wich is the profession(s) you’d like to play with in a dungeon?
I prefer running dungeon on my guardian. They have awesome support capabilities mixed with great survivability.

2) Wich profession(s) you think is/are easier to play in PvE and why?
It depends on what type of PVE. Farming in a zerg in Orr requires different abilities than running a dungeon. Personal preference is also a factor.

For me, the warrior was probably the most intuitive to learn, but I wouldn’t say it’s the “easiest” in all situations.

3) Wich profession(s) is/are more rewarding for the skill you show with them?
I’d say engineer and elementalist have the highest skill cap.

4) Wich profession(s) is/are the most difficult to play?
Again, it depends on the situation and personal preference.

For me, the necromancer is the one class I just don’t “get”, even though most people find it easier than elementalist or engineer. I just never have been able to do well when using health as a resource. I’ve had the same issue in other games.

5) Wich is the profession(s) that,in your opinion, shine over the other in PvP?
I don’t do sPvP.

6) Wich profession(s) can draw the aggro on itself/theirselves the best?
Really, the only aggro control abilities in the game are pet-related. Thus, necro or ranger. As far as player characters, it’s mostly whoever is putting out the most DPS.

7) Wich profession(s) has/have the highest dps capability?
It’s not really something that’s easy to calculate, given the current nature of the combat log, the many ability bugs, and the inaccurate tooltips. It’s also kind of dependent on group comp, since combos can make a big difference.

Perhaps a better question to ask would be, “Who has the best DPS to survivability ratio?”

8!) Do you think people should play the profession based on how them like the design (without even playing the game) or based on their ingame preferences?
I don’t think there’s a right answer here. Some people value mechanics way more than aesthetics, and for others the opposite is true. Unless your idea of fun is derived purely from victory (winning PVP matches or PVE progression), in which case aesthetics unquestionably have to take the back seat, you should do whatever you find the most entertaining.

Here are my anwsers…

1) Wich is the profession(s) you’d like to play with in a dungeon?
Elementalist – can slow, burn, freeze enemies and tackle several at once. Plus it is a support class for all those warriors.

2) Wich profession(s) you think is/are easier to play in PvE and why?
Ones that mindlesly spam one or two attacks to kill (i.e. warrior, ranger). It takes less thinking, which is ok if you prefer to just spam attack/DPS.

3) Wich profession(s) is/are more rewarding for the skill you show with them?
I enjoy my elementalist. Nothing more rewarding than pulling several mobs at once and pwning them with all 4 elements. But this is a subjective topic.

4) Wich profession(s) is/are the most difficult to play?
Ones that require thinking and movement – Elementalist, Necromancer etc. Basically ones that you need to change your usual gameplay style – which in most part is spam attack lol.

5) Wich is the profession(s) that,in your opinion, shine over the other in PvP?
Subjective topic – IMO, Elementalist due the fact that you wield various elements which cause different effects on mobs, plus you can adapt your play style to PvE, PvP, WvW.

6) Wich profession(s) can draw the aggro on itself/theirselves the best?
I’ve read that necromancers can do it.

7) Wich profession(s) has/have the highest dps capability?
IMO, Warriors since its all about attacking the enemy and survivability of their attacks.

8!) Do you think people should play the profession based on how they like the design (without even playing the game) or based on their ingame preferences?
The game needs to be enjoyable. You may like your character but during game play it may not work out the way you wanted it to. There needs to be balance and it is difficult to make games such as this that move away from the ‘holy trinity’ system (i.e. tank/healer/dps).

Engineer is the only class I haven’t played yet. I don’t know if any of my answers would change once I do go through that class.

I had to shorten all of my responses, as I am wordy and I guess we have post length limits.

1) Which is the profession(s) you’d like to play with in a dungeon?
All of them. While I don’t think some are as easy as others to run dungeons, I’ve never created a character without a desire to, at least a little bit, hit up the dungeon play.

Likewise, I am happy to see diversity in what classes are in my party in a dungeon. So far.

2) Which profession(s) you think is/are easier to play in PvE and why?
Guardian, warrior, and ranger are the easier ones, though I am focusing on the solo/leveling/farming aspects with this response.

Guardians can just stand in anything and, through their traits and skills, face-tank typical mob damage even in large groups.

Warriors output pretty ridiculous damage. While I dodge more on a warrior than on a guardian, warriors have excellent options at range as well as in-close and can shred through PvE mobs in maps.

While I have not gotten my ranger to 80 yet, the ability to send in two pets into combat and fire from extreme range has made the experience really straightforward. I mean, there’s a reason why bots are practically all rangers, I guess.

3) Which profession(s) is/are more rewarding for the skill you show with them?
Elementalist and mesmer have, to me, reflected more of the effort you put into controlling and mastering them. Both have a sort of fluid feel to their combat once you get going, including the efforts you make to kite and avoid damage while tearing into enemies and the ways you can support allies and friends. I think there are rewards for skilled play in every class, but because of how I feel in answering the next question I think mesmer and elementalist "reward" skilled play more.

4) Which profession(s) is/are the most difficult to play?
I think mesmer and elementalist are the most difficult.

I was leveling characters, especially at lower levels (under 40), I had more times where I was in dire straits with an ele or mesmer than with any of the others, especially before I learned how to better play both.

Thief had some terrible spots in personal story missions for me, but I never had that problem in other PvE.

5) Which is the profession(s) that,in your opinion, shine over the other in PvP?
I have not done sufficient PvP to answer this question.

6) Which profession(s) can draw the aggro on itself/theirselves the best?
Hmm. That’s an interesting question.

The short answer is that I believe this is largely dependent on who does the most damage.

For groups of enemies, dump your AoE as quick as possible. Bursts of damage work great regardless of class. For champions and bosses, dodge attacks in close and go for solid, high sustained damage.

I’d love to say that, similar to GW1, your armor type/stats and if you were the first enemy in range contribute to this, but since we don’t have "true tanks" in this style of play I don’t think that’s true.

7) Which profession(s) has/have the highest dps capability?
any of them

Though I do feel that warriors are sitting at the top right now, with probably thieves close behind. We can’t be certain of this due to no means to accurately record damage (the combat log is a joke), but aside from attacking the Master of Damage NPC in Guild Wars 1 we never cared about it there, either.

Any class can pump out sufficient damage, though.

8!) Do you think people should play the profession based on how them like the design (without even playing the game) or based on their ingame preferences?
People should play whichever class(es) align the most with what they want to see when running around Tyria. To me, it’s equally valid to pick a class because you like their armors, their spell animations, and their design as it is to pick a class because you like the damage numbers you can toss out, the way the class skill and utilities work, or the traits they have.

Thank everybody for all the answers, just a bit thing…in the 1st question what i meant is wich class you’d like to play with you in a dungeon, regardless of your class, instead than your favourite class for dungeons

Anyway,i’ve seen mesmer and elementalist are the hardest ones to master, while the engineer has a high skillcap.
Warrior,Guardian and Ranger (also minion necro) have an easier time in PvE.
Thief and Warrior could have the highest dps possible.
Except than Necro and Ranger there’s no way to “capture” aggro.
PvP isn’t played by many
And,the look is important but mechanics are too.

Now,with that said,i think my FINAL choose, for my 1st character that i’ll level to 80,will either be Ranger or Guardian.
I like their look, they’ll make my PvE easier than other professions and i like their mechanics.

What i don’t truly like,is that except the Elementalist there is no dedicated caster in the game…i mean…almost every class is about spamming your 1 ability while using others, while a caster should mainly use his/her other abilities to deal damage, having an almost useless auto attack.

Anyway, just a fast extra question for Elementalists: How’s possible to land a scepter 2 ability on a moving enemy? x.x

As an answer to the last question:
“Know” the future. Where will your enemy be in two seconds? Whom is he following, how is that person moving. Calculate two seconds into the future and then place your attack accordingly.
I know, that this sounds difficult, but you’ll get a feeling for this simply by playing. You’ll probably won’t get a 100% hit rate with this, but it should be high enough after a short while to be a meaningful attack.

I mean…it’s not ground targeted!
It’d be easy (in PvE) to land it if it was ground targeted, instead it’s cast on the enemy x.x

Ah, I forgot, that fire 2 is enemy targeted. Well, this only can be a relatively sure hit, if
a) somebody facetanks
b) enemy is immobilized
c) enemy targets you and you make sure to keep him more or less rooted (dodging through him and the like)

I’d be very happy if you could share with me your opinions, have a nice day and thanks for reading.

1- Mesmer, The Feedback skill is amazing against ranged mobs. The skill which revives people for 15seconds and then fully if they kill something (can’t remember the name) is really useful. And Illusionary defender helps keep damage to people down.

2- Guardian, very strong, durable, lots of heals. And a great group player!

3- Engineer, very hard to play well. I consider it underpowered. Well, if you don’t use kits.

4- Necromancer, most people say they are underpowered, but if you play it right it can be very rewarding.

5- Thief.. but don’t use it. Too strong and most of the time requires little skill. Necromancer however is hard to use but can, with practice, shine over everyone else.

6- Warrior.

7- Elementalist. It has a lot of AOE’s too.

8- I say play everything! I have tried all classes, I like: Engineer, guardian, mesmer, necroamancer and elementalist.
