Hello guys,

So, I am new to this game, just started last week. I am enjoying the game and community although I still feel a bit lost into the big amount of content that gw2 has to offer. Even being new and using the lvl 80 boost pack, what gave me full exotic gear, I’d like to work on my char to not let him outdated. Ive seen that many people work for legendary gear now, but I don’t know anything about it.

I wonder if any of you guys could give some advice on how do I get these gears. they are drop from bosses? they can only be crafted? which bosses or which maps should I go on daily basis to farm the items for these gears?

I think at least by doing these runs daily I’d already feel like I have something to do instead of feel lost. I know that a new expansion is coming so I dont want to stay so behind

Well the good news is with full exotics you’re not really behind. You’re just normal.

So to explain the gear in GW2 the higher tier stuff you’re looking at goes Exotics -> Ascended/Legendary. The main difference between Ascended and Legendary is that Legendary has the ability to swap stat outside of combat and it’s a shinier skin. Stat wise both Ascended and Legendary are equal.

There are quite a few ways to acquire Ascended gear, such as WvW, PvP, Achievements, World Bosses, Fractals and Crafting. The surest way to acquire Ascended gear is to craft it and for that you’ll need a crafting discipline at level 500.

Legendary is harder to acquire and sometimes comes down to luck at getting the right precursor (in the case of weapons). You can buy the old Legendaries or their pre-cursors from the TP but beware crafting one requires a lot of materials you may not have access to at the moment.
In PvE the Legendary armour set is linked to Raids but there is also Legendary armour for sPvP and WvW.

Also you seem to be worrying about when PoF releases. PoF will not introduce a new tier of gear. Ascended/Legendary is staying as the highest tier for this expansion (and possibly for most future ones as well).

Pro-tip… don’t bother with Legendary armor unless you Raid….. like ALOT. From Exotic to Ascended, the cost is nearly 10 times higher (gold value) in materials per piece, with a full set of armor costing roughly 400g. Legendary armor cost that much “per piece”, and takes a “minimum” of 16 weeks of time gated activities to craft a set.

The alternative methods in PvP takes at least a year, due to season reward caps. WvW takes about 22 weeks for a set; but without bonus pips its 40 hours a week (at most) for the weekly ticket cap. Getting WvW rank to get bonus pips takes a while….. so you’re looking at 6-8 months for a set if you’re starting from scratch and do nothing WvW.

Or you can spend a month passively gathering materials (plus time gated mats) and gold, and craft an Ascended set when you need it. Its also important to note that you can change the stats on Ascended gear for fairly cheap, once the initial piece is crafted. This makes the stat swapping (as a feature) on Legendary gear incredibly cost inefficient, and is more to save bag space then anything else.

First off, welcome to gw2. While it is nice to have a long term goal in mind, since you are really new to the game, I’d suggest not thinking about legendaries for the time being; or at least play the game for a few months and actually learn it before you go off working on a legendary. Legendaries do not drop period from any sort of content and they are a huge commitment. They cost thousands of gold to craft, require tons of material that you just can’t grind and amass in a short period of time with sheer diligence (like large quantities of obsidian shards and mystic clovers), and generally take a long time to finish. It is not uncommon to hear of people who spend 1 year+ crafting their legendaries simply because of how cost prohibitive they are. And also because how material/loot drop works in this game, it is really hard to say there is a specific boss or area you should be grinding. On the bright side, if you really want a first generation legendary weapon asap, you can always invoke the power of a credit card to buy gems and do the currency exchange to buy one off of trading post. Although, you’ll probably be spending something like $300 for a single weapon since they cost around 3-5K gold depending on what weapon it is. The arguably ‘cooler’ second generation legendary weapons like Chuka and Champawat, HOPE, and Nevermore are account bound on creation and you cannot buy them from other players via the trading post unlike first generation legendaries.

As starlinvf said above, you can get legendary armor from pvp, wvw, and raiding. Pvp and wvw legendary armors require you to… well.. pvp and wvw a craaaap ton. And they don’t have any special fancy effects. They just look like armor. The raiding legendary armors have some really cool transformation effects when you enter combat, which is a huge part of their allure. They require you to raid a lot and complete a variety of raid related collection achievements. I pvp as well as helen keller so I stay away from pvp and wvw, and thus can’t comment on how expensive those legendary armors are. I’m pretty much finished with my raid legendary armor, and it has costed me about 2400 gold so far for the entire set. If I didn’t have some mats saved up, I probably would have spent close to 3000 gold.

I really appreaciate the answers and everything you guys said makes me not to worry so much about it. I mean, at least with the new expansion, wont happen any gear changes as it was stated above. Thats really good to hear.

Also it is good to know the following tier of gears. I’ve seen some ascendant gear but I actually thought legendary and ascendant were the same just people would call it differently.

It makes me a bit more patient to farm the gear enjoying the game. Like I don’t have to rush to get it now, specially because as you guys said, it takes time to grind materials to craft or either buy it.

I will take the advices to get ascendant, since I understood that there’s not much difference between them, and also with time, doing raids and saving materials get legendary gear.

Get ascended weapon+trinkets, armor just correct stats/runes is fine @ exotic. Trinkets are basically given away for free with Living World 3 maps, ascended weapons are worth the investment, they yield the biggest upgrade. Make sure you do Tequatl every day for a chance for a weapon cache – very slim but getting just 1 will save you a bit of gold.

Adding to Despond, Tequatl also gives you a chance at an ascended weapon cache with a unique skin.

Doing Daily Fractals also gives you a decent chance at obtaining Ascended equipment when you hit Tier 3 and higher. You get 4 tries a day in tier 3, and 8 tries if you are in tier 4. However… if you are in tier 4 you probably already have most of your ascended equipment. Tier 3 can be reached by mostly trinkets and a backpack. Or you can find a group who’s willing to carry you through the tier 3 dailies. And yes, they do exist Most of the fractals are doable with 3 or 4 players only.

You can try and craft grand master tokens to obtain ascended equipment from the Mistlock Reliquary. And these are actually very interesting to think about. In a way, the Grandmaster Tokens are cheaper. And a way they can be more expensive. The effectiveness depends on the market.

But the fastest and surest way is to just craft the equipment. If you don’t have the required crafting skill at grandmaster level, you’ll just fall prey to lady luck and RNGesus.

Armor wise i personally go for the pvp legendary since i have the ascended one(which can converted to legedary), and need only to follow seasons when they re up for collecting tickets and nothing else.
I m not on a hurry, so i just playing one chest per day.
All remaining playtime goes to pve/fractals/gathering or whatever.
Yes ,is in time depth target, but at least is easy and enjoyable…
About weapons i dont really care so much as i have them all asc
