Am I right in saying that the stats for these weapons are nor better than those for ascended weapons? If so what’s the point in having one?

Cheers

The stats aren’t better. The two main reasons people get them is:
1) They like the skin and/or effects
2) You can change the stats on a legendary at any time (out of combat) so they’re good for people who change builds a lot

Some people also get them because Anet have said they will always be best-in-slot (they used to be exotics and were upgraded when ascended weapons came out) so they see it as an investment for when more tiers are added. But since there’s no guarantee that will ever happen I think they’re a minority of legendary owners.

The Stats for Ascended and Legendary are always the same, Once another Tier for Weapons come out Legendaries will also be at that new cap.

Thanks to all for your responses. I’m a level 80 Ranger who isn’t very good at manoeuvring when in one-to-one combat (put it down to old age) so like Usain Bolt I was looking for ‘More Power’. Having ground my way to crafting an ascended longbow, an ascended reaver and an ascended claymore I think I’ll stick with what I’ve got.

Technically, Legendaries are worse than ascended weapons. You can switch their stats, but not the sigils, without cost-intensively replacing them.

A set of ascended weapons with different stats for different roles can be fitted with suitable sigils. So it sort of makes sense to get a Legendary to skin your set of ascendeds. ^^

There were a few suggestion thread about the Legendary’s stat switch and selecting between previously added sigils along with it. Never got much response. -.-

Unfortunately that’s not an option you’re ever likely to have in this game.

One of Anets goals for both GW1 and GW2 is for player skill, rather than equipment stats to be the determining factor in how good a player is.

It’s great if you can’t or don’t want to spend time grinding for the best stats because exotics are relatively easy to get and ascended only gives a very slight difference, but it does mean that if you’re struggling you don’t have that option to fall back on.

Having said that one thing which can make a big difference is which stats you pick for your equipment and from your traits (and what runes and sigils you use). Whist you can’t simply overwhelm the enemy with big numbers picking a good combination of stats can help a lot.

For example ‘zerker’ builds, which use beserker stats (power, precision and ferocity) are popular in PvE. These are “glass cannon” builds that do a lot of damage but have very little defensive capabilities and rely on a combination of movement and killing the enemy before they have time to do much damage to stay alive. They can be very effective but can also be tricky to play if you struggle with movement.

So a better option for you might be to put points into toughness (armor) or vitality (health) which will enable you to endure more damage before you go down. You will still need to move to stay alive (particularly during boss fights) but it does make the game a lot more forgiving.
