I’ve been thinking about grabbing a legendary weapon set for my character (sword and axe, for the record). However, the ways to get them are either to throw down an absolutely insane 2500 gold each or go around and grab anequally insane batch of incredibly rare items. So, I am left with but one question; if I was planning on map completion (and thus Gift of Exploration) anyway, which of the two options is faster? And what strategies do you have to hasten the process for either choice?

Fastest way is to buy them outright.

I’ve been playing since launch, tried getting a precursor drop from the Forge, hoping for one dropping during events and have not ever gotten one, nor have I ever had more then 2500 gold at 1 point in time to buy a created legendary.

Buying a precursor though and then getting all the other stuff needed might also be an option. You would still need to put in work to get clovers and such, but at least you’ll have the precursor to start with.

I would prefer an option that does not involve real life money changing hands, please.

I didn’t say anything about real money though. I can’t see how your gold/gem situation is nor have you said anything about it.

You asked for the fastest option and that will always be to buy them, regardless of how you get the gold.

As for waiting for a precursor drop, like I said, played over a year 2000+ hours, no drop. It’s all up to luck. And the rest is done in-game.

That leaves option 3 buying the precursor and doing the rest in game (again, no real money needed but then you would have to gather the gold playing)

There are no other options at this point in time, sorry. If there were I’d have a Legendary already.

Sorry, when you said “buy them outright” I thought you meant discard the grind and just get them through gems. But goldgrind it is. Now I just have to figure out where to get 5k gold.

No worries, I got frustrated a bit cause I too would love a precursor and/or Legendary.

It’s a lot of work if there is not luck along the way.

Either way you’ll be farming a lot. It will be cheaper to craft your Legendary however, this comes along with certain unavoidable tasks such as collecting;
- Skillpoints (200-300)
- Karma, Fractal Relics, Laurels or a combination of the three
- 500 Badges of Honor
- 100% Map Completion (Gift of Exploration)
- 500 Dungeon Tokens (which differ per Legendary, Honour of the Waves for Frostfan and Ascalon for Bolt if I recall correctly)

Unless any of the above mentioned will be an enormous issue, I’d recommend crafting your own Legendary, it offers more variation, making it a more pleasent experience in the long run for most people. Since you require less coin (people selling the Legendary always intended to make it for sale, you’re paying for the materials, TP fee and their time spend) it should be faster aswell.

Note: I didn’t double check if I mentioned everything that can’t be bought with gold.

Personally I’m finding it much easier to make one than buy it.

Especially since I’d been playing for about a year when I decided to start so I’d already made a lot of progress. I had almost 200 skill points on my main character, enough badges from achievement chests to get the Gift of Battle, enough karma to get the obsidian I needed, about 50% map completion, 2/3 of the way to maxing the crafts I need…

Honestly the part I’m struggling most with is saving up to buy the precursor from the TP (can’t be bothered trying the Forge) and the Icy Lodestones. Only because I’m terrible at saving up virtual money for things I don’t really need – I opt to get minis instead. But it means saving up 4x more to buy the finished weapon would be virtually impossible for me.

The question is why you want a legendary?
In my opinion a legendary weapon is something to give me a purpose in the game. The real reward is that I get to play the game, not that I get a shiny item.

So it prolly is more efficient to buy your legendary, but not as much fun.

Because I have never before had the chance to fire unicorns at my enemy, and probably never will again.

Seriously though (although that is my reason) this is a good point. Although wanting something to work towards doesn’t completely eliminate saving up to buy it. You might want a goal but not like some/all the requirements for making a legendary and prefer to work towards it by farming dungeons or sPvP (which gives gold now) or whatever.

Here is my suggestion to maximize your farming time

After crafting 2 legendary (third on the way) and helping 3 guild mates with 4 more legendary, i really don’t agree with your method.

1) Find what will need more time to acquire. For bolt its gonna be Charged Lodestone, for Frostfang nothing really (a lot of stuff take time but not 1 item that will take more than the other). Of course for both gold will be a big issue and Karma if you didn’t accumulate it before the nerf. For Gold, dungeon will be the best way to gain it. For Karma the best way is by doing Tequalt (join TTS) or high level fractal (Get to level 50 and then do level 40 for maximum karma). For Charged Lodestone, do CoE and use your charged core to create lodestone. This should be your long term goal since day 1.
2) There is no perfect or optimal order of which item to focus first. But here some general rule to follow.
-Mystic Clover should be done early, because they give you Tier 6 and Lodestone, which gonna decrease the number of these material that you need to get.
- Keep the stuff with a fixed price to the end. This mean : Recipe and Icy Runestone.
- All the other stuff come from the TP and their price may go higher or change so you need to focus on them first. Check their price on a regular basis or even better create a spreadsheet dowloading all the price from the TP (gw2 spidy) and create some basic formula so that you quickly see if the price of one the material you need is going down. If you don’t wanna do that, just check with low price you could expect from a material (check spidy for that) and post as soon as possible a order for part of what you need. That way, if the price go down you will have your material at this low price without too much effort.
- Not all material are worth specifically farming for them. It depend on the method you farm and what is the price of the item. Usually i only farm Orichalcum, because it can be done really quickly and its not from random loot. But for most of the other stuff, its usually better to farm the gold and buy it on the market. Charged lodestone were good to farm a while back (gold was harder to get and these where selling for 3 Gold, but its not a good idea anymore).
- Don’t buy Glob of Ectoplasm. By doing dungeon you should have enough rare to salvage to get all you need. Keep your money for stuff more difficult to get.
- Like other material, your precursor should be bought at the Market. Some people can make money out of precursor but you need huge amount of money and you need to do that with several precursor you limit the RNG effect. With 1 precursor its all about luck and you could run out of it and of gold because you get your precursor. This is one of the biggest expense so watch the market carefully to get the best price out of it.

General tips : Do what you prefer and don’t rush. Its a long journey. For normal people its between 3 and 6 months. So don’t make the mistake to farm and grind where you dislike it.

Cruy.

15 little kittens.

“Whose Kitten is this?” – “It’s a Charr baby.”
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

Simple, buy the precursor, craft everything else.

Even with the RNG of Mystic Clovers you gain T6 mats, sadly my love for miniatures prevents me from saving enough gold to outright buy Dusk… but one day I’ll finish my legendary…

A useful site for calculating the cost of buying the materials to craft a legendary.
It also covers the cost of making the various exotics that are crafted with the Mystic Forge.

If you are debt free, have excessive disposable income and spend a lot of your free time playing the game then buying outright with kitten cash isn’t a bad option

Because I have never before had the chance to fire unicorns at my enemy, and probably never will again.

This right here is the reason why you are a perfect candidate for a legendary. There’s no other good reason- they’re the same stats as ascended, granted the ability to change prefixes is nifty (I never use it). The cost is outrageous compared to ascended, I could have fully geared all of my alts in ascended with the money and time I spent making my Bolt and Howler, but instead I look like a walking thunderstorm and I love it!

Personally, I crafted both of mine, and if I ever make another legendary, I would craft again. I made a neat little checklist chart breaking down each of the gifts into their core components and crossed them off when I finished each one. That felt alot better than just building up a gold number, but that’s just my opinion.

Either way, it’s going to be a grind that takes hundreds of hours, so be prepared for that.

Also if you are not a big WvW player they recently changed gift of battle. If I recall you need to be lvl 30 of WvW and have the 500 badges of honor.

I started my legendary on January 1 I have been a casual player since beta. So it’s finally the time I feel ok crafting my legendary. First priority I would agree is getting the precursor, put in a reasonable buy order if you have the gold now, it’s a great way to save some gold and hide it away until you have the rest. That’s what took me the longest aside from the karma grind.
