How exactly are we supposed to get precursors to legendary weapons?
Mystic forge? It emptied my wallets. Gameplay and hope for one to drop? Been playing quite intensively since beta and haven’t seen a single one. So, once again, how exactly are we supposed to get them?

Do not spend any money on it. It is much much better to use the money on other elements of the legendary. As Jay said, keep gambling on the mystic forge with drops. It helps to have a trading system with others. In my case I need a GS (dawn, but when I get dusk I prolly sell it on the tp to buy dawn), some of my friends need staff, longbow or shield. So all drops I get go to them and in return I get their greatswords.

I throw in all greatswords that are level 76 or above of masterwork quality or higher. Always make sure you combine a set of 4 of the same quality. it has a change to be promoted to a higher quality.

Besides drops, I also use dungeontokens to get exotic greatswords. You can use some of the WvW greatswords, but both the price (tokens AND a gold) and the fact that some are bugged and don’t go into the forge prevents me from doing that.

Keep in mind that exotic weapons will drop in price (and actually are dropping in price) on the tradepost. This is off course due to the introduction of ascended weapons. the raw crafting mats are staying behind a bit cause of people needing them to level to 500. When that is done, in a month or 3 I expect those to drop as well.

On to poff that, before the end of the year a garanteed way of getting a precursor is added. It will be challenging (they said) but requires no luck.

Right now? Gambling with the mystic forge, getting extremely lucky with a drop or outright buying them for a lot of gold (depending on the precursor).

Before 2014: a guaranteed way to get the precursor you want – most likely by crafting but not definitely.

The only PLAN you can have to obtain a precursor right now is to buy it off the Trading Post (very high price, as I understand). My current thought on a Legendary for myself is that if I get a lucky Precursor drop I will consider (based on weapon type) if it’s worth starting the painful process to craft one or earn some big money on the TP with it (one option is to flip it for a precursor for weapon I WOULD want to craft a Legendary of).

Personally, I think they should NEVER have allowed Precursors (or crafted Legendary’s) to be trade-able (account bound on aquire). That would make the weapons actually something “Legendary” to obtain within the game.

The way I did it for the 3 legendaries I crafted (Juggernaut, Sunrise, Kudzu) was to just save every copper I got. Don’t buy anything and sell everything you get. Gambling on the MF is a waste imo. Sure some people get lucky but for every lucky guy, there are 50 very unlucky guys. you are better off just saving cash and putting in a buy order. Think of it this way, you can either sell 4 rare GS for about 1.5g or you can throw em in the MF and have a less than 1% chance of getting a precursor. Add that up 100 times and well you get the idea…..

A few months ago I agreed with you. But with the current announcement of a crafted precursor before the end of the year, I’m more willing to test my luck, cause I know it hasn’t to be tested endlessly. I know many people who got the precursor this way. In my opinion buying a precursor now is ridicilious and a waste of money. You better safe up some money till you know how to craft it later this year.
