Letters with Accent Marks
I think this is useful for those who wish to create names with these accents in. However, if you find people who you want to whisper or party with and they have an accented names, then:
If they have spoken in chat:
Right-click their name in the chat log and click whisper/party.
If they are running around in your visible radius but haven’t spoken:
Click on the character, right-click their portrait (their face) and click whisper/party.
If those fail, then you would have to resort to using accents yourself and typing in manually.
Although, if they aren’t in chat or the vicinity, I don’t see how else they interact with you. If they are from the forums, tell them to pm you first. That might be easier.
To be honest, I will refuse to even try to add people through typing especially if their name is hard to type. (names with accents or names like bjgbjhbhhbggh)
The biggest problem with names like these is that rightclicking a name does not always give the option to invite that person. If only that function would work fine, typing names would be history (at least for me).
I vote for /sticky!
Actually there’s a very easy solution to this. If you find a name that you want to invite to your party and right click Invite to party does not show then just add them as a friend. Press Y to open your friends list and right click the name there and Invite to party. Right after they join you can just delete the name. Same principle if you wish to join a party instead of inviting someone to join yours.
Admittedly it is annoying to have to do this, but until Arenanet fixes the invite glitch these extra steps are a necessity.
This way you won’t have to remember a bunch numbers that correspond to an accent or have to constantly switch between game and the forums just to spell a name.

Hey thanks, I wasn’t aware of that workaround!
yea but still it’s not a bad thing to learn a few of the more common letters used. Plus in the off chance (actually in the most likely case) there’s a name that you want to use and it’s taken well you can add an accent marked letter to your name to get it.
An alternative is Character Map. Just ask Windows ro “Run” (Windows key and R if you can’t see a Run thing) charmap.exe then look through the fonts until you find the thing you want. You can copy/paste that to notepad one at a time or whatever and then copy/paste the name into GW2 when you name your character.

I prefer using a different name with no accents as opposed to use a taken name with a letter replaced with one with an accent. Makes things easier for myself in the long run so I don’t get locked out of parties that find typing my name too much of a hassle.
You say that but I can’t tell you how long I’ve been trying to pick out a name that was not taken, which I would bet so have countless others. Though you could add a second name in their, a last name or title or honorific a lot of people tend not to like doing that either. Mayhap the name someone chooses has an accent mark and they do not know how to add it. Either way, it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Regarding using letters which might be common in some languages such as ç or é both of which we use in Spain (I am from the UK living in Spain btw). As far as I know French and Spanish use ç but noone else (?) making it hard to type for people with other keyboards. I have invited people to my Party sometimes by typing the name in rather than just clicking, I am lucky in a way because I have more characters than an english keyboard without all that Alt+???? stuff but most don’t have the kb I have. It is an inconvenience to put it mildly.
I suggest just changing a letter or two. For example in LOTRO I am known as Thord because most of my 6 characters there start with Thord… (Thordbeinyk, Thordalval, etc) so I wanted something starting with Thord here, I have Thordyr best I could do cos Thord is taken. Do what I did and make life easy please Try a Google for elven names or something and you them for inspiration if you get stuck.

For the players that use a US International keyboard layout (very common in the Netherlands), there is a much easier way to type accents:
Type the accent key (e.g. ` or ^), nothing will happen. Then type the letter you want it to be on. If there’s a match, you’ll get it. (so ^+ e = ê but ^+ p = ^p)

Probably the most annoying thing about this game is that… every name is practically taken. This has led to people using accent marks in names, the problem with this though is a lot of people do not know how put them on so they find another player for parties, dungeons, etc. So here’s to hoping that this gets sticky’d so people can learn how to use them or, at the very least, be able to quickly look up the letter here. There are two sets I am putting up.

Another way is to keep a .txt file handy you can alt tab to that has all the accented characters in it. You just highlight the one you need, then copy and paste. But yeah the other work arounds are good to know. And seem a bit more elegant.

As a swede I can say that Å å wil not work in name (works fine in chat though). You may want to test all before posting the list.

Yet another way is to add more locales to your computer. Then you can keybind switching keyboard layouts. Currently running Swedish, Greek, Bulgarian, Polish and Croatian. That covers a host of letters (most don’t work in gw2 though).
Hi, I’m trying to make a character name with ’ ý ’ in the name but it doesn’t work. It’s accepted into the character naming screen, but is ’red’ed out. Does anyone know why this is? Or how it could be fixed? Thanks!

Nobody really understands what you said, but if you’re going to post on a thread meant for players to help other players, please either post something helpful or at least constructive criticism.
And I say this on behalf of the majority of players. Thanks!
You’re right. “I ain’t learning this kittening list,” is not straightforward, and not helpful. Let me rephrase.
DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME CHOOSING NAMES THAT ENSURE YOU ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO BE INVITED WITH, BECAUSE RIGHT-CLICK-INVITE FAILS 80% OF THE TIME.
