I’ve seen people say that one should not waste laurels on rings since they’re easier to get in fractals. But I just did my first fractal run today (was quite fun and interesting, I wish people did these more), and it looks like it takes ten runs per ring, or slightly less with dailies like today’s. That doesn’t strike me as a whole lot better than spending the 35 laurels… Or, looking at the wiki, 25 laurels + 250 “Badges of Honor” which for some reason I actually have despite never doing WvW.

Is there something laurel-exclusive and more important than rings that one should be saving for? I strongly dislike this game’s crafting system, so it will be a long time if ever before I need to worry about ascended crafting. And I don’t see myself spending 75 laurels on a cat mini.

If you like fractles then they are the best way to get rings laurels are valuable because they are time gated so its best not to spend them till you need them. rings are also are rare drop from the bonus chest at the end of lvl 10+ fractles but you need Agony resistance and you need an ascended peice to slot that in but you should have enough P.relics to buy one by the time your lvl 10. If you don’t want to do fractles for your rings and you already bought your amulet then yes its fine to use laurels.
ps: the badges of honor came from an achievement chest. Edge of the mist is a good way to get more if you need them.

The best place to get ascended rings is through fractals. They can drop from the boss chest at levels 11+ or you can purchase with 10 pristine fractal relics.

The best place to get ascended amulets is through laurels. Cost of 30 laurels. Or 20 laurels + 250 Badges of Honor in WvW (This is the best option)

The best place to get ascended accessories is this guild commendations. Cost of 5 gold and 12 guild commendations.

These are the best ways (cheapest) to get your ascended gear but there are other ways to do so also.

2 rings from Laurels with take you 28 days to get and that way you ain’t gonna be able to buy your amulet and since 50 laurels is equal to about 50-75 gold, well its kind of expansive. Now of course if you dislike Fractal, its a good way to go.

But from fractal, its will take you 20days at most, even 10 days if you are luck with Daily. And if you like fractal, you gonna want to get as high as possible. By the time you reach level 50 you will have enough rings drop and pristine to give rings to all the character you want.

If you like Fractals, get the rings that way.

If not, nothing wrong with using your Laurels (especially since now, all you have to do is log in everyday to get up to 55 per 28 days of log ins).

Due to the additional Ecto cost via the Laurel route, it IS much better to get Accessories via Guild Commendations.

I got my amulet about five minutes after hitting 80, and have my first accessory via commendations as well. And my crafted backpack has an infusion slot too, not that I can put anything in any infusion slot yet.

You guys seem to be talking about gear acquisition in the platonic ideal of GW2, where one can always find whatever group one needs to run anything at any time. That is very much not the reality of this or any other MMO, at least for me. A vaguely realistic estimate of how quickly I can get a ring from fractals is about five weeks, figuring a very optimistic once/week and hoping for favorable timing with dailies (could be that the daily was why people finally wanted to run one last night, not sure). PUGging does not seem possible since I’ve never seen anything listed in the 1-9 category; probably not content at all suited to PUGs either, at least as a new player.

I’m also still not clear on what laurels need to be saved for. Sure, they’re time gated, but so what? Like I said, I have the amulet, and from what I’ve seen rings are the only other useful item one can acquire with laurels. Is the idea that one normally converts laurels to gold in some way, as Thaddeus alludes to?

We did a level 10 run last night – I gather that way the experienced players still have a reasonable chance at decent rewards or something. Unfortunately it looks like at least one more run of being auto-killed whenever agony comes into play before I can get a Versatile Simple Infusion and start getting some AR. I gather the system worked more smoothly back at the beginning when everyone could do a bunch of level 1-9 before hitting 10+… I’m working on my passion fruit and karka shell supply but the enormous cost in Powerful Blood, Ancient Bone, etc. is the real limiting factor on the mystic forge infusion options.

Some people convert the laurels to gold via T6 material bags, yah.

I think a lot of people are saving them just in case something else gets introduced as a laurel reward in the future, though. Being an ever-evolving MMO and all, its completely possible that more rewards will be added to the laurel vendor, and people want to have a stock of them saved up in case something pops up that they need to have right away. Lets say, just as a random example, that the new legendaries require some laurel item that costs 200 laurels. That’s more than half a year of waiting if you have to build them up gradually, whereas someone that has a stockpile might get it day 1.

You can see a full list of items you can buy with laurels here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Laurel_merchant

In my experience most people who say to save them for later mean if you want to make a legendary, which needs 250 of each T6 mat, which are much easier to get with laurels than anything else, or simply if you need a lot of gold quickly, in which case you can exchange laurels for T6 and sell them.

My attitude is to look down the list and decide what I want. My first purchases were the two minis, then ascended rings, now I’m saving them for T6 because I’m making a legendary, after that it will probably be rings and amulets for my alts.

Not to sound like a kitten but have you tried to post an LFG yourself for 1-9? I’ve never really had a problem pugging any fractles lvl except the 20s. The reason you don’t see any on the lfg is they probably fill fairly fast.

You really shouldn’t make the MF infusions they were put in the game for people with more money than they knew what to do with they offer no noticeable improvement to your stats.

The way you turn laurels into gold is to buy heavy crafting bags with them and sell the contents on the TP, although with the recent drop in t6 prices it’s not as good as it used to be. you also need alot of laurels to craft ascended weapons and armor but if that doesn’t interest you and you already got the other trinkets then spend your laurels worst thing that could happen is that you have to wait to get more.

Ya If there is no LFG already made, make your own. Trust me it should fill up rather quickly no problem. I never said that it should take you 5 days. I said it’s between 10 and 20 days. It can go even lower if you are already high in level, but that’s not your situation. I never said that 10 days was normal either, its the lower end. If fractal is your main focus for now, you shouldn’t have any problem making 1 fractal per day you are playing. Increasing your level slowly while getting pristine and checking for daily fractal to make sure you get all of those that you can. With zero AR you should be able to do up to level 19 wihtout much problem. Of course if you never dodge Agony shots and take them all in the face it will be a problem. You will need 10 AR to receive the minium incoming dmg from agony. Which you can already do since you have 1 earing and 1 amulet. You just need to get 150 fractal relic to buy yourself 2 versatile infusion. By the time you reach level 10 you should have like 200-300 fractal relics so you should be ok and Agony shouldn’t be a problem AT ALL for you.
