Leveling and personal story
You shouldn’t be grinding mob xp. That’s silly in this game. General map exploration is pretty quick if you don’t want to do any rose sniffing, or jump into the EotM. Zerg a round a bit and get levels and loot. There’s also crafting. But that takes a fair bit of money.

Thanks for the advice. Funny thing is, after I posted this I wondered a bit more south and found a whole new area in my level range. I forgot that I can go to other race’s starting areas. Leveling pretty quickly now. Thanks again!
The other thing to remember is that the personal story isn’t meant to be something you go to in order. It’s meant to be something you pick up when you’re ready for it. You don’t even have to do the personal story until you’re level 80 and some people never do it at all.
It’s just another thing to do in the game, not the “main quest” that you have to do. Don’t expect to keep level with it, because it wasn’t designed that way.

No worries. It’s a pretty big world with loads of xp in it. By the time you hit 80 there may even be maps you haven’t touched yet.
And, to back Vayne up, you don’t need to be too precious with the personal story. Sometimes its good to hit that up in lumps, especially where the story segments flow. Your game, your story. Have fun

Also when you are exploring make sure that as well as hearts you’re doing any events you come across (this is especially important because at later levels maps have very few hearts), gathering crafting materials (which you can sell if you’re not interested in crafting) and getting all the map completion points like vistas, points of interest and waypoints.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I never considered the personal story not being ‘the main quest’. I always thought of everything else as the side quest. Pretty cool. I do enjoy the personal story the most.
Go clear some zones (that means go get all the Points of Interest, Waypoints, Vistas, Skill Points and Renown Hearts in an entire area….100% them).
Start with all the cities (use portal to reach Lions Arch and then portals at the hub to reach other cities). Note the cities do not have Renown Hearts or Skill Points (the home instance area CAN have one shared one) and are smaller, so they are faster to clear.
Then you can begin to clear each of City Starter (LVL 1-15) Starter Zone (or move on to higher level zones if you want). Note that the rewards for each zone increases as the level of the zone goes up.
Return to do your Personal Story as your level allows (or you can level a good bit and then go back and do a number of Story Missions back to back).
