Q:

Hello everyone,
So I’m trying to make a character specifically for dungeons but can’t decide on profession. Anyone know what would be a good light armored profession to use for dungeons and if possible can you please list your reasoning as to why?

Regarding gameplay I usually play tank or bruiser style warriors and I mainly build toughness, vitality, and power on both. It would be nice if you could add a build that would be familiar with my play style but feel free to include any type of build that would be most effective of the class.

My first thought on seeing “light armor dungeon runner” is berserker (power/precision/ferocity) elementalist, since the fiery greatsword elite skill is extremely useful for a party and always in demand, on top of having really high damage output in general and the ability to stack might and fury easily. It has the drawback of being the squishiest class though so possibly that’s a con for you given you said you like playing tanks.

Mesmer is also decent in dungeons thanks to having access to skills that give projectile reflects/blocks, plus portals for skipping and the time warp elite is a nice boost for the party during bosses. They also are a bit more durable than elementalists and have blocks and invulnerability skills + some teleportation skills so they might be a bit better suited for you re: survivability? Keeping in mind that berserker is still the best for dungeon efficiency so you’ll still be fairly squishy.

Necro I’d advise against for dungeons specifically, as they’re pretty ‘selfish’ in terms of skills/boons and anything they can do for the party ckittenually be done as well or better by other professions who’ll bring more to the table. Good for open world PvE and WvW, but mostly a meh in dungeons.

I only have experience with Elementalist and Mesmer. I just didn’t like Necromancer.

For dungeons as a light class to be fully effective you really need to just go berserker. Elementalists especially are so squishy that bosses and elites from dungeons are going to knock you down in two hits regardless of stats or gear.

That being said, play how you want. I find berzerker boring sometimes, so if you don’t want to play that way, don’t. Both Ele’s and Mesmers can dish out serious damage as berserker but I rarely play either that way. I play a toughness/condition damage staff Mesmer as a main build, and to be honest, it would suit your tanky desire. I use mostly Carrion equipment. I can solo champions even in level 80 zones and rarely go down in dungeons outside of a complete onslaught from monsters. Condition damage is slower than berserker and it require some patience, but I love it. I also have berserker equipment for times when I just want to kill and get some dungeons done.

Head to the Heart of the Mists and play around. Check out each professions utilities and see what you like. Both have some great moves to bring to a dungeon group.
