I main an Engineer. Love it. Absolutely love it. But at times, I just want something different, a low level relaxed toon. So, I’m looking for an alt but can’t decide on a profession. I’ve tried many at lower levels but nothing is grabbing me. What I have so far:
Ranger (70) – was my 1st, but they’re so boring right now I can’t get back into it. Bows are lackluster and spirits are crap.
Guardian (46) – was fun for a while, but gameplay just seemed too monotonous. Buff, swing, heal, repeat.
Necro (45) – also got boring, though I suppose there’s potential. I went full condition with scepter/dagger+staff but necro had so many bugs and problems I stopped playing it. I think it’s no better now.
Warrior (15) – loving my engi, I wanted to try full range warrior (longbow/rifle) but that’s so boring cuz almost all warrior utilities are just stat buffs.
Mesmer (10) & Ele (10) – Started both because they sounded dynamic and fun. Still at such low level I can’t tell yet. These seem like my best options so far.
Thief – don’t have one. Had a lvl 12 back at launch but don’t know anything about em to judge.
So that’s my progress. I need something that’s got build variety, that can deal damage but have utility too. Something fun and dynamic. Something with pizazz. Also, I’m 99% PvE.

With what you said you should stay far away from Necros, and Elementalists. While they have damage and utility, they also have very few viable build options. Mesmers seem to be your best choice. Damage and utility through the roof and lots of build variety. Thief could be fun for you too, nice burst and very mobile with invis and shadow steps. Just keep away from p/p, it looks cool, but every other choice is superior.
Anyone else chime in? Do mesmer offer build variety and a fun play style?
For my experience either mesmer or thief too. Thief was more fun while mesmer was… sadly almost always more usefull.
Mesmers have a fair number of different play styles, although the almost all focus on mid-range combat. The only thing they lack is a good condition spec. Another plus, is that you can switch between most of the different styles without changing gear, or changing very much gear.
But if you pick a Mesmer, expect a rough ride up to 40. I would try it out until at least 45 (like your Necro)
you posted in the mesmer forums also
i personally had no problems leveling the mesmer so i never can really relate to this lvl 40 business.
It probably has a lot to do with how skilled you are at MMOs and how well you understand the systems. A mesmer was my first and my third toon on my first MMO. As a first toon on a first mmo it was brutal. I’m sure it would be much easier now.
Give the Necro another try. You might want to look at Nemesis’ Hybrid-Build for an interesting PVE-experience. For leveling/hearts/Open-World-PVE a minion-master-build is nice to. (I do agree that full conditions gets boring very fast)
My main is a Mesmer and my second main is an Engineer- I think those are the most enjoyable classes.
Mesmer is extremely versatile and have great utilities.
It can support any playstyle and the class mechanics are very fun.
There is just something about being super tricky.
I also had a problem finding many classes boring after playing a Mesmer for 5 months- Engineer did it for me
