Q:
Lots of Possible Combos, SO HARD to choose
you have a problem with Mesmer, They cant use daggers……
Oh, yeah, I’m sorry, I meant elementalist
Can’t help you as I’m swapping between 5-6 weapon sets on my warrior by mood. At any given time I’m carrying at least one of each mainhander, a shield, warhorn, greatsword, hammer, longbow and rifle.
You should really be using 2 weapon sets on your ranger. Ideally one ranged and one melee.
You could use both longbow and shortbow (which works at melee range) but personally I find bow (either) + sword/dagger or sword/torch more fun because there’s a lot of movement involved and a lot of inflicting conditions on your enemies and you do better damage at melee range. A lot of people like greatsword too.
As for pets you can use whatever you want in general PvE but for harder/more structured things like dungeon or PvP you’ll want to switch them according to what you’re doing – for example if you want to keep your opponent at range get a bear to tank, if you want to do high damage get a bird, Jaguar for stealth etc.

Actually if you end up in melee range with the Ranger you should try to disengage ASAP.
Otherwise you’re dead pretty quickly.

That may be true in PvP, I wouldn’t know since I don’t do it. But I’ve not seen that happen with my ranger in PvE. I start off ranged then when a mob gets close, rather than bat it away or run away myself, I just swap to sword/dagger and engage it. I’ve had no problems doing that, in fact I think things go down faster with melee than ranged.
lunawisp was my peacebringer on City of Heroes – she lives on in memory as my gaming id.
I try to keep a complete set of weapons on each of my characters, and I prioritize upgrading them based on how often I play each weapon. (My warrior is not level 80 yet, but I foresee some heavy spending there in the future.)
The reason I do this, is because each weapon offers situational advantages. I will give the elementalist as an example, as that is the one I play most often.
- On my elementalist, I like playing PvE solo. For this, I usually use Dagger/Dagger due to its short-range burst damage and mobility.
- When I play in groups with lots of melee-ers (dungeons/fractals/WvW tower defense), I tend to switch to Staff due to its ability to lay down many combo fields for my allies to trigger.
- Against single opponents of Champion or Legendary rank, I like to play Scepter/Dagger, because I prefer to keep my distance from those. This was also my favourite weapon set while leveling up to 60.
- Finally, I like to use Scepter/Focus in specific situations where the Focus skills really shine (the Harpy/Uncategorized Fractal, the Solid Ocean Fractal, or certain Gauntlet battles).
- The combination Dagger/Focus is one I have never used, though.
- I don’t do PvP
So even though the elementalist is unable to swap weapons during combat, I still like to mix up my weapon set for variety and effectiveness. So my advice to you is to try out all weapons extensively, learn for what situations each would be a good choice, and pick two or three combinations that you like. Meanwhile, don’t forget about your other weapon options, and always be ready to take out that Warhorn, Sword, Longbow, Scepter or Mace for when your Greatsword is not cutting it.
