ArenaNet has already reduced scribing costs through the latest patch, however, you can lower the cost even more if you’re willing to do some cooking.

Brown pigments are pretty expensive, and needed for a wide variety of items while scribing, so instead of having to buy them, you can actually craft brown dyes, which is whee brown pigments can be salvaged from. To craft brown dyes, simply buy Nutmeg Seeds from karma vendors (there’s one by the farm in Gendarran Fields, the heart NPC), and 25 potatoes (which can be gathered from the potato farms in the game, or also bought). Then craft the unidentified brown dyes, salvage them, and get brown pigments.

This can also be used to make some gold profit even if buying potatoes straight off the TP, but results can vary based on salvage luck.
