Hello everyone, sorry for my bad English in advance.
When I was gearing my elementalist for WvW, I ran into a trouble when I had to choose sigils for my weapons. There are many good choices: Force/Accuracy/Might/Power. After some math I figured out that you need to maintain atleast 4 stacks of might from sigil of Power/Might to be on par with Sigil of Force which gives 5% flat dmg increase.
Now comes the most interesting part, how to calculate whats better 5% dmg or 7% crit. I made calculations in excel and was very surprised with the outcome (can’t add my excel, if anyone knows how to upload it for others to see write in comments).
So basically CriticalChance has diminishing returns (same as Vitality/Toughness), its the most powerful when you have low CritChance and/or high Critical Damage. Look at 2 examples:
1)Your attack does 100 DMG and you have 0% Crit Chance (Critical DMG will be 200% to make it simple). After 100 attacks you will do 10,000 DMG. Now we will add 1% CritChance, and your DMG will go up to 10,100 because 1 hit will crit for 200 DMG.
(DPS increase =1%)
2)Your attack does 100 DMG and you have 99% Crit Chance. After 100 attacks you will do 19,900 DMG. Now we will add 1% CritChance, and your DMG will go up to 20,000 because everything will crit.
(DPS increase =0,5%)
It might look wrong at first, because its the SAME amount of flat additional damage in both examples (+100 DMG). BUT now look at DMG done before we added that 1% crit. Context matters, now you see that DMG in second example is 2x bigger, because we have a lot more crit and THAT IS WHY our DPS increase is 2x smaller. We just compare the same flat amount of damage increase to two different damage values, of course the highest number will have the least % benefit. It is like adding 10 cents to 1 Euro and to 2 Euros, in first case the benefit will be 10% and in the second it will be 5%, although the same amount was added.
