Q:

Guys i want someone to explain me how Magic find works since i was on Gw2w wiki and it helped me a little but didnt answered me my question.

So it says it has great chance of getting rare items but does this includes opening Black lion chests also opening Unidentified Dye. Also how much magic find you can get and how to max it. Waiting answers

100% MF doubles your likelihood of drops when grinding. Does not affect anything else.

So if you are getting say 1G of loot per hr, it will increase to 2G with 100% MF (or some linear percentage if you have more or less MF% than 100)

Get armor, trinkets, runes with MF% and total it up. Food with +MF also works.

I’m no expert this is just what I found when I was researching what MF was. I dunno if there is a max MF%. I think there are some people who claim they are running around with near 200% MF. But to get much past 100% it will cost a ton and unless you are a pro farmer, it won’t be worth it. Also, remember you are giving up other stats to get MF. So your play experience suffers. Less power etc.

MF affects grinding/mob drops ONLY. So you will get more dye drops but opening them should stay just as random. No double dipping there,

Some people claim they have seen better loot from chests etc. but there is no real evidence.

Ninja u are all wrong, Magic find increases the chance of getting better drops, it does not increase the number of drops you get.

And getting past 100% is worth it, i use wep mods that give 0,6% more per kill, stacking up to 25 kills.

And your source is?

If rare drops is 2% before MF then it becomes 4% at 100% MF that is an increase. Double the drop rate.

Olle’s perfectly right. You don’t get “more” drops. You get “better” drops. Gold dye, gold weapons etc.

You guys are all technically wrong in different ways.

If a rare has a .02% chance to drop, with 100% magic find it becomes a .04% chance to drop. It will not increase the amount of drops, nor will it make it far easier to get rares, it just gives a better chance. It does not “technically” increase the amount of drops you get, but it increases the chance of it being dropped. I think Ninja seems to get it, just didn’t describe it well in his first post. If you are an unlucky person, do not use magic find, as the increase is not substantial enough to overcome bad luck. Max magic find is over 200% I know, you can get the sigil on a weapon that brings you up to 15% with a full 25 stacks, armor bonus is 18%, and runes can bring you up another 70ish% (Don’t feel like looking it up right now), and jewelry is another 35%, then omnomberry bars is another 30%. You can also get the 50% MF buff from the gem store as well (Or black lion chests).

Sisho’s post above hits the nail on the head. The MF comes into play each time you loot, it’s not cumulative. E.g. Your chance doesn’t get better each time you don’t loot a rare etc until you do. It just means that every time the system runs the calc for your loot, your MF gets taken into account and it increases the chance of better loot for that drop.

As for stacking it, that’s the individual player’s call. You may have to sacrifice other stats to beef up your MF. I usually opt to use MF food if I’m feeling lucky.

Wait, making it easier to get == getting more rares? you are agreeing& disagreeing to our posts?

Oh goodness gracious. “Unlucky person,” eh? Do you check your horoscope before donning your gear to go adventuring? Consult the tarot? Assess the zone’s feng shui before deciding whether magic find gear is appropriate? I wonder if Anet knew that a simple stat could bring out so much superstitious nonsense.

Look, Foronisus, every bit of information out there on magic find is speculation. No one has sat down and really figured out what it does. The diminishing returns mechanic made it difficult to figure out what it does in the field, which is what most people care about. Only a few tests have been run on other applications, and we can make some educated guesses. Tests done in the field thus far have been little more than superstition, feelings, and anecdotes. I expect that magic find will raise the drop rates of magical armor and magical weapons as you fight monsters. It might raise the drop rates of magical items, like fine crafting materials, but no one knows for certain.

If I had to make an educated guess, I’d say that magic find probably has no influence over Black Lion chests or unidentified dyes. Black Lion chests always give you one item from the tonic table, one item from the booster table, and one item from the tools and goodies table. I doubt you can boost your odds of getting a permanent tonic or a permanent black lion trader or whatever from wearing magic find. I also doubt you can boost your odds of getting higher rarity dyes from unidentified dye by wearing magic find gear.

However, that’s speculation, based off of general programming knowledge, some knowledge of how odds and drop tables interact, and a specific interpretation of the word “magic.” I haven’t checked and I can’t make any guarantees.

This is testable for dyes. I’ll happily encourage you to try it out and tell us your results! For Black Lion chests, the drop rates on the rare items are so very low that we’d have an extremely difficult time ever testing this idea out. It’d take a lot of real money, far more than an average player would want to spend.

Ill try it when i have time since i have plenty of work theese days i cant even touch the Gw2 icon not to mention playing it. But from tommorow i have 5 days free-time and ill make sure i test everything and tell you results.
