Does MF have a diminishing return or something? I’ve noticed that mine seems to fluctuate up or down by between 30 and 50 points when I’m in the same gear, have the same buffs, and have the same number of stacks of Luck…

I don’t get it. One minute it’s 210, the next it’s 170, the next it’s 150

MF doesn’t behave in the way you describe to my knowledge. You’d need to give a bit more context though for people to try to diagnose the issue. If you are experiencing this in WvW it’s possible that the values are being changed by the Outmanned buff, or if you belong to a guild it may be that you are being affected by guild buffs. What food buffs do you use?

Also, found this on the wiki – perhaps this explains the problem?

“As with all other attributes, the total Magic Find is not always correctly displayed in the hero panel, e.g. under the effects of banners or guild buffs, the additional increase provided by food will not be included in the total. However, ArenaNet has confirmed that the correct amount is applied when you roll for loot.”

It was in PVE. The above paragraph does help, but it doesn’t explain why the value in my hero panel was changing.

I had the same gear on the whole time. the only difference was that I had varying stacks of luck depending on if I was downed, but I accounted for that (15% up or down would be expected with the superior sigil of luck).

For the same period of time I had my gear static (so assume that wasn’t a factor) and I had the chocolate omnomberry cream, guild MF banner, and bonfire magic find boost. I had no other buffs, and yet sometimes my MF was, as I said, in the high 170-200 range, and sometimes it was down in the 130-150 range.

Has anyone else experienced this?

The chocolate omnomberry cream cream only gives you 40% MF when you are under the effect of a boon. So that would definitely fluctuate unless you have a permenant boon on you in and out of combat. I don’t know if or how that fluctuation is represented in your hero stats though – maybe try it with a stable MF food, like peach tarts, and see if you still see changes in the numbers?

ah – great point. That point got past me. I will try again with either peach tarts, or ensure I have a boon on.

If you get downed your magic find will drop in the hero panel, it’s been reported as a bug, but anet hasn’t really commented on it.

They only way to get it back to normal is to remove all your equip, and then put it back on, sometimes that doesn’t work though, and you’ll have to log off to the character screen, and log back in.
