Hi there!)
Ive got a question about magic find. Ive got ~70% magic find (at farm set) and my wife got 0% but she is more lucky than me and got more masterwork\rare\exotic stuff from mobs and from dungeons. How it can be?
for ex. : We killed 20+ mobs and ive got few master. and a lot of fine armor. But she got a lot of master. and few rare things…
Same thing with dungeons) I know she is not a cheater (we are playing in one room).
Maybe it depends on group? We are playing in group.

Chance is your problem. That’s pretty much it.

Statistically you should get more rares etc. But in practice it is not always the case
Playing in a group just increases the frequency of drop from mobs I believe.

I’ve spent 10-20 gold buying/crafting Exotic Explorer armor and Exotic Explorer Jewelry (combined magic find +~112% plus 30% from Omnomberry Bar; total ~142%). I just completed two 1/2 hours tests using this Explorer set vs complete Exotic Berserker Armor and Exotic Berserker Jewelry. This test was run in Frostgorge Sound below Glacial Collapse where the Minotaurs roam.

Results:
Explorer vs Berserker
Vials of Potent Blood: 20 vs 26
Hoofs : 18 vs 24
Filthy Hides : 0 vs 4
Misc. White armor/weap: 8 vs 8
Misc. Blue armor/weap: 2 vs 0
Misc. Green armor/weap: 0 vs 1

I would have assumed that the ratios of drops would have been significantly improved with the Explorer armor, but it obviously wasn’t affected at all. Although I didn’t count that kills in each case, and I would certainly expect more kills with the Berserker armor/jewelry set; the ratio of drops did not improve with the Explorer set.

Why even have the magic find atribute if it doesn’t do anything????

We are still in speculation as stated there ain’t much Intel. I assume it has some sort of logarithmal curve where additional increases have a smaller effect each time.

But yea at the end of the day it’s all about chance. Say wearing MF increases your chance of getting rares:

5% to 10% there is still the 90% chance you will not get one. On average 1/10 times you should get a rare but in practice it may not be the case. (Numbers are made up for ease)

So yea, anything’s game. :P

Try different maps, I run a level 80 thief solo with Explorer armor and Luck of the Traveler add-ons and find for some reason some maps are better than others!

hahaha i experience the same thing. i run with full MF set – gear, weps, trinkets, runes… and more often than not, my wife will get more rares than i. even a precursor from Bjarl drop in CoE.

i call this the Your-Wife-Will-Always-Get-Better-Loot than you mechanism that is currently in game.

Do keep in mind that MF effect the loot table you end up getting loot from (higher tables, better/different loot chance), not the final outcome, it also is effected by the base % of getting too one of those tables.

For example if you have 5% chance to get to a certain table that 5% * 1.7 making it still only 8.5% chance to hit a better table, that may or may not have a significant increase in potential drop rate.

All in all its hard to say how much better the next loot table up is than the previous one. So while you may be in the next table it may very well have only an increased chance of droping masterwork items by 1% over the lesser table, so still greatly determeined by the RNG gods.

It’s a big big problem there are countless posts on this not only do we have to manually calculate how much we have but we also have to figure out if it’s working. It never works for me, in fact the higher my mf goes the worse the drops that occur until eventually no matter if i’m fighting the same mobs or not or even in a 80 zone, my drops become porous bones.

It’s weird. I think they broke this on purpose to make it even more impossible to farm items we need to get the mats we need to craft end game items.

It’s not just mf it’s loot drops in general, it’s money drops, it’s chests not giving anything but blues, it’s chests not being affected by mf, it’s vets and champions not dropping a thing other then greys or blues. It’s just all messed up the whole thing. Anyway many of us have vowed loudly to not log back in until they fix this issue as you can see by the thread it’s very old topic.

Oh and just to clarify. The myth that it’s simply bad luck doesn’t work when the algorithm they are using for drops can be manipulated +- on a whim.
