I’ve seen compendiums of calculations, logging how to make the best profit selling a head of lettuce. But quite frankly, I would rather spend my time grinding than calculating max profit. Unfortunately, for grinding as a money-maker to work properly, there still requires some savvy marketing skills in order to make the best of the money and items you get in-game.

What are some simple tips you could give players (novice or experienced) that could maximize their in-game profits without making them go insane over calculations?

Gather at every node you see….sell mats once you go over 250 (this is a personal choice as I like to have mats on-hand for crafting items as they go up in value and for stuff like the crafting Monthly)
Don’t waypoint around a zone to attend to events after level 50. The WP cost starts getting too expensive for a 3m walk to the next area and you could be gathering mats along the way, killing mobs for random drops or finding other events that suit your purposes better.
Invest in blue/masterwork MF armor/jewels…4 major/2 minor runes are more cost-effective than a full superior set.
Talk with your guild leaders about dropping banners for MF, karma and other boosters.
Convert excess karma into 68+ armor/weapons, dump into mystic toilet, sell results on TP.

Some of the above is just personal stuff I do. Effectiveness varies.

Side note: I’m not a dragon event farmer nor do I have a legendary, precursor or the gold needed to even get close to buying one.

-Check the Trading Post price for EVERYTHING! You never know when one of your little bags or drops will sell for a lot more than the vendor will give you for it.

-Erase the word “Legendary” from your brain. It’s a hyper-expensive pretty weapon skin that will absolutely ruin this game for most people. If you don’t care about getting your legendary weapon then you don’t need money for much, and the game becomes a lot more fun. If you have the time to grind out a legendary weapon, then you probably won’t be reading this post. If you don’t really have the time to grind that much, or you just don’t like grinding that much, then trying will likely burn you out and make you hate logging on.

-If you have a decent job, and find yourself logging on specifically “to farm cash,” and you kinda hate it, just buy gems. That’s what they’re there for. Most adults have enough income to toss ANet $10 here and there and not feel it. Some of us spend that much on a trip to Starbucks.

-If you don’t have a decent job, or are morally against paying money to a “free to play” game, grind out some gold and buy enough gems for a spare bank slot and perhaps a spare bag slot. You’ll be glad you did, as it’ll open up how much junk you can store up until it’s time to sell it or throw it away.

Adding onto this part…
If you have the spare gold to pay the Guild Rep vendor (2g for 1,000 Rep, 20g for 10,000 rep guy), then I suggest setting up a personal guild for the Vault. It’s cheaper than another bank slot (comes out to something like 1g50s vs the 5-8g in gems for a bank slot)

I assume by “mats,” you mean materials? Like resources for crafting (Side question: is building up crafting abilities worth it?)

Don’t waypoint around a zone to attend to events after level 50. The WP cost starts getting too expensive for a 3m walk to the next area and you could be gathering mats along the way, killing mobs for random drops or finding other events that suit your purposes better.

I do this all the time and find it’s how I keep gaining money instead of losing money. Still, a very good and easy tip to keep in mind.

Invest in blue/masterwork MF armor/jewels…4 major/2 minor runes are more cost-effective than a full superior set.

Do you think you could expand on this option a bit? How would I profit from this?

Talk with your guild leaders about dropping banners for MF, karma and other boosters.
Convert excess karma into 68+ armor/weapons, dump into mystic toilet, sell results on TP.

And maybe this one, too? I’m not too familiar with this method.

Thanks for the great advice!

This is another good tip that I utilize very often, though I very rarely come across valuable items. How could I ensure that I get more valuable items: magic find? dungeons? WvW?

-Erase the word “Legendary” from your brain.

Will do. I suppose it pays better to invest in more quality weapons and gear than the shiny ones.

I guess i had never thought of this…I suppose when it comes time to sell, there’s a greater payout, right?

Actually my husband and I have a guild vault without spending a single bit of gold on influence. Granted, we’ve been a little lucky with the guild discoveries in black lion chests (and we used our story rewards) but we’re sitting on 10K influence trying to decide if we want to go for the next guild bank tab or not. If you have someone you trust, a duo running events can earn plenty of influence.

Yes, the various gathering materials. You can also generally sell the “bags” that drop from bandits and other mobs for a decent price on the Trading Post. These would be the “moldy pouch”, “moldy bag” and other items that you open to gain more crafting materials.

Invest in blue/masterwork MF armor/jewels…4 major/2 minor runes are more cost-effective than a full superior set.

Magic Find helps in the open world farming to get better quality items (does not apply to dragon/dungeon chests). The actual effectiveness is heavily debated on the forums but I tend to lean more towards “anything that gets me a chance at better rewards is worthwhile” train of thought.

Guilds can drop Magic Find and Karma boosting banners. I think there is a Gold boost banner too…but I don’t remember now.

You can buy L68+ blue or green armor/weapons from the karma vendors in those zones, throw 4 of them into the Mystic Forge in Lion’s Arch and get a chance at a higher quality item and/or one that can be sold for some silver on the Trading Post.

Here are my two fav grinding spots in game right now….

Also sometimes it is not work your time gathering at every node you pass, when im grind node mates I dont bother with elder wood I keep hunting for mithril as its more time/cost effective especially when mithril was 50c an ore and elder wood was 7c.
