Making a Necromancer
I was just wondering what would be a good profession for him to play alongside me as a Necromancer?
The profession that he has the most fun with.. If you like a profession a lot, you’ll get better at it, and find it’s use in any of those game modes..
But bear in mind: A build that works like a charm in a dungeon, might not work at all for WvW..
All in all: This is a game, having fun should be priority #1!

Necromancers are definitely not bad in dungeons. People talk about not wanting necros in dungeons because they don’t provide much group support/buffs. But you can definitely hold your own, do good damage, and stay alive in a dungeon group. That being said, you probably will have a hard time finding groups for high level fractals, as those require some consistent group-wide support and survivability.
As Tribio said, you will have to switch up builds and armor/weapons to effectively play in each of the modes in the game. The meta right now in PvE is berserker gear, even for necros. Typically, that won’t work as well in wvw; so, having a back-up condition damage set and build would be good. And you’d need to work out what you like best for spvp.\
As for what class your brother should play, he should play whatever interests him.
I don’t get all this necromancer hate. I have tons of fun with mine
The “play what you like most” thing has already been mentioned. I’d add that the “meta” is not necessary at all to play PvE. If DPS is what you’re after, I suppose it can’t hurt, but there are other viable builds out there as well, up to and including a PvE condimancer. Granted, you might need to look for a bit to find a relaxed group for specific content (or make your own lfg), but in this game, there are very few “wrong” ways to play.
The necromancer subsection has some threads about different builds that you can check out before diciding on anything.

Thank you everyone!
If you’re playing mostly PVE, then pure power, pure condition and the hybrid power/condimancer is the usual way of going about it. For dungeons it’s powermancer usually. Solo roaming on a conditionmancer is doable if slow. Hybrids are more fun as you can tweak it to your style.
Necros hold a special place in WvW where their boon stripping abilities are always sought after. A few well placed necros armed with wells and/or marks and boom that’s all your enemy’s buffs gone. Furthermore, their access to Fear makes them excellent at zerg disruption. Watch the enemy for when their stability is stripped then bam, drop a fear bomb and watch the hammer train disintegrate.
I have all class to 80. But the only 2 class I run dungeon with is guardian and necro.
The reason is for pug dungeon, the most important thing is never die or wipe while doing “ok” damage. Which is what make necro great for me.
Necro is really really tanky. Even if your group isn’t doing so well, you wont’ have a problem surviving or raising downed people while remain at high health.
