Making a legendary weapon
You can start by checking the wiki, or www.gw2effiecency.com, as to what you will actually need to make one. After that there is a few different approaches you can take
1. Start farming the required mats, don’t worry about the prec, once you have everything craft the required gifts and then either buy a prec from TP, Mystic forge one, or do The precursor crafting collection.
2. Farm gold like mad, throw money at it until you have what you need, proceed to craft.
3. Do a Mix of the 2 and farm somewhere that gives mats that you need, and stuff you don’t need(SW for me), sell everything you do not need and at some point you will have a nice equilibrium of stuff to complete the legendary by crafting what you can, and buying the mats for the rest with the excess gold you’ve amassed
I’ll probably throw some real world money at it, what materials would you recommend just buying with gold that are impossible to farm?
Not that I’d recommend throwing RL money at making one, but the hardest to get bits really do depend on the legendary that you’ll be making.
If you plan to get Mystic Clover via the Mystic Forge, start with that. There’s a chance to get material you need later on.
You will need gift of battle from the wvw reward track. You can use boosters to increase participation gain and shorten the time by about 4 hours.
Maguuma – Predatory Instinct [HUNT]
Necromancer
If you buy everything that will be around $150 USD
For the clovers the single clover recipe is more consistent but also more tedious. You only need to get 75 since the Gift of Battle will result in getting 2
Check the price of the precursor before starting the collection on it. The collection for some are much more expensive than than buying
There will be some tedium with the dungeon runs. Be prepared.

Some tedium = 5 runs of a dungeon’s explorable mode.
Or if you’re into PvP or WvW anyway, complete the dungeon’s reward track 3 times.
My advice would be to check the Wiki to find out what you need before you start.
Identify anything that’s likely to take a long time (like Mystic Clovers and the Gift of Battle) and start working on that first. Also don’t work on just one thing at a time as a lot of things will over-lap, especially if it’s something you can buy with gold because most activities will reward you at least a bit of money.
And if you want to put real money towards it the best place to start is probably the 100 Icy Runestones you need for the Gift of Fortune because the only way to get them is to spend 100g.

I don’t recommend throwing real world money at a legendary. A great number of people who do that end up dissatisfied afterwards.
IMO you should do the icy runestones at the very end. There are very few other uses for icy runestones so if you abandon the legendary you will have wasted 100 gold.
You can start by doing the appropriate dungeon, at least you will get some gold and loot out of it.
On reset night WvW can be fun if you can get in, try doing that this weekend. Make sure you set your WvW reward track to the Gift of Battle track, and use booster if you have one.
Avoid purchasing T6 mats until your clovers are done.
You can get clovers from the monthly reward chest, so don’t make too many clovers.

When I suggested buying the rune stones I was assuming the OP had already decided they definitely wanted a legendary. Honestly it didn’t occur to me someone might start making one without being sure they want to go through with the whole process.
But yeah, if you’re not sure you want to stick with it it’s best to not make or buy any of the parts which can’t be easily re-used for something else.
