Planning on upgrading to a GTX980ti by late 2016
(edited by beefjus.9347)
I’ve been playing the game since launch (with the occasional hiatus every now and then when a new game comes out, or when I get really busy IRL), and I’ve only ever made lots of gold whenever I’d be out of a job or on extended vacation, and even then, I’ve never broken past 300g. How do you folks maintain your in-game income while being fully employed? I’ve been finding it hard to maintian a steady income in-game with my current job, that has me working 9hrs/day for 5days/wk (not to mention an average of 3hrs travel time from work and home).
Do you guys just bankroll it with your credit cards or something? Cause I’ve seen the conversion rates, and it’s pretty expensive…

you just dont buy anything and gold piles up
Thanks, I would never have thought of that by my self.
There’s no need to be rude. That’s pretty much what it comes down to. Make sure to salvage/sell all of your loot and you should be fine, assuming you’re doing HoT stuff or SW where you can expect a decent amount of loot
Between HoT stuff, doing fractals every couple of days, and doing a dungeon or a fww dungeons daily before the nerf for a couple months I was able to craft Bolt with the cash/mats I had on hand earlier this week.
I agree with Fermi & Linken: gold does accumulate as you do stuff, especially if you see the things you don’t want. Mostly, people in this game (as in others) have more trouble with spending than with earning. (Businesses and governments tend to have the same problem.)
Other important ‘earning’ tips that are more about saving are:
You can choose to use RL money to pay for nice stuff; I don’t recommend it unless it’s really important to your enjoyment of the game. Instead, I recommend taking your time — the things that one really needs to handle the content are relatively cheap; it’s only looking good that costs a lot and eventually, you’ll have enough to afford some of the stuff you want.
If you do want to spend RL cash, I recommend investing instead in some of the QoL conveniences that will help you spend more time play and less time spent on minutae. For example, more bank tabs, extra character bag slots, infinite salvaging or harvesting tools, and one or two outfits (I like those because I don’t have to keep transmuting while leveling up — the outside looks the same until L80).
tl;dr sell high-demand stuff (instead of buying it), use the TP to get rid of things you don’t need, and most of all, be patient — you’ll earn more than enough to pay for necessities.
I suspect that the reality is the vast majority of players are not making hundreds of gold a week, or even a month. A minority might do, and they’re probably also people who are more inclined to spend time on the forum talking about it. But if most people were able to do it the rate of inflation in game would be much higher than it is.
My solution is fairly simple: I accept that I won’t make gold as fast as some people do, and therefore won’t be able to buy expensive items as frequently, and then I stop worrying about it and get on with playing.
Most importantly I don’t care how much gold I have at any given time. I don’t try to keep a fixed amount, or earn a fixed amount per day/week/month. I’ve been playing since launch with no significant breaks and I can only remember one time when I had more than 100g, that was the 7 months when I was saving for a precursor. It might actually have happened at other times but I don’t remember.
Shortly after buying the precursor (which cost me just under 800g) I got down to literally nothing: I bought the precursor, spent almost all of what was left over on materials for an ascended coat, went to Drytop for some reason and died, and the waypoint cost took the last of my coin. But that didn’t matter either, especially because it was in the middle of an event so about 2 minutes later I jumped back up to over 1s.
Instead what I do is keep a mental list of items I want, roughly in order of priority (and subject to change at any moment) and as and when I have enough for the next one I want I buy it. It might be weeks or months between purchases, or it might be very quick (although that’s usually when something relatively cheap jumps up the list – like when I randomly decided I wanted the noble coat skin for my ranger). Buying the item might take me back down to under 1g. But none of that matters.
Spending gold on things I want is just another goal to work towards within the game. I don’t worry about completing achievements on a regular basis (even dailies), or completing maps within a certain time frame. Why would my approach to gold be any different?
(And now I come to think about it I think this is at least partially because I’m an adult, officially at least, and in real life I have to be responsible with money; making sure I can pay my bills and afford food and something goes into the savings account for emergencies etc. Games are my escape from that, where I can spend everything I have on something random and not care because I don’t need to afford food or rent or whatever.)
I suspect that the reality is the vast majority of players are not making hundreds of gold a week, or even a month. A minority might …who are more inclined to …[talk] about it. But if most people were able to do it the rate of inflation in game would be much higher than it is.
My solution is fairly simple: I accept that I won’t make gold as fast as some people do, …and get on with playing.
Good advice, for whatever level of income.
@Fermi- Someone gives me a sarcastic comment, I give one right back. I was asking people how they managed their finances in game, and I was told to just never spend.
re: using IRL money on IGN currency- Yeah, I could not press my escape button any faster than when I saw the exchange rate…those prices are nuts! Besides, I really don’t want to resort to “pay to win” options.
re: not worrying about income and just playing- I’m currently trying to work towards an ascended weapon, with my very tight schedule (I get home at 9pm every night, and wake up at 5am for work, so I only play a few hours during the weekend), and it’s proving to be an exercise in madness. Coming from a WoW raiding background, I find it hard to let people simply carry me in raids; it weighs on my conscience and pride. So I haven’t even set foot in the raid, cause I don’t want to be a burden on anyone…but I’m also afraid that by the time I finally earn my ascended weapon, the raid will be yesterday’s news, and I won’t be able to find an organised group that wants to do it anymore.

For one I wasent being sarcastic you asked how people got thier gold and thats how I got mine, if you have that little time to play then its for you the gem to gold was made for.
You work so much so you can inject some cash to gain the gold you need to craft ascended weapon, now if you dont want to do that then it will take you awhile to gain enough to be able to craft that weapon by your own admission.
Its your choice really, alot of games dont even give you this option.
@Linken- I apologise then. But you do understand that the way you worded your response was open to interpretation, yeah? But yeah, my bad.
