Map Completion Tips
For some of the POIs and vistas, you need to enter the structure. If your server currently owns the structure, you can do this easily by going through a rectangular portal, usually by a gate. If your server does not own the structure, and there isn’t a mesmer to portal you inside, you need to either destroy a gate or a wall to get inside. Depending on your server, it could take a long time before you gain access inside every structure on every map. If your server likes to have massive zergs that take objectives in quick succession, find out when they tend to that and follow the zerg around. Every week, server matchups are reassigned. There are three servers in each matchup: red, green, and blue. Each color has a different starting area on each map. Depending on how well your server is at defending things or how bad your opponents are at attacking things or even the active times of your server and opponents, you should be able to just walk around getting your completion on your Borderland and your section of EB.
Your server will be rotating the starting points in each borderland (and in the Eternal Battleground) each week. It is random so you don’t necessarily rotate through all three colours every 3 weeks.
Patience is the key here. That, and running with the zerg. Look for your commander’s icon on the battlefield (blue icon) and join them.
Like Tom said it’s mainly a matter of patience.
Check at least once a week to see what colour your server is and what areas you control. It’s much easier to complete areas when they’re under your control (especially in the Eternal Battlegrounds where other than the castle locations don’t change hands often).
If your server does well at WvW check at peak times especially because they’re likely to have taken over some enemy territory as well which will allow you to get more of the map in one go. If your server does badly then do the opposite – check at off-peak times when you’re less likely to have lost ground to your opponents.
Finally if you get into a map that’s currently active, particularly if there’s a good commander, try running with the zerg for a while. You don’t need to be good at WvW to do that, you just need to follow along (although you can of course join in, either attacking or using support skills) but this will give you an opportunity to get into towers, keeps and Stonemist castle when they’re under attack, will will allow you to cap that area even if your side doesn’t successfully conquer it.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
I watched to see what were the non-peak hours for the other servers and then snuck around to get to as many open areas as I could. I also ran with a few zergs and got into some of the structures that way – check to make sure you also get the view if there is one in there. Sometimes it is a real pain to try to get back in especially if it tends to be a heavily contested structure or keeps flipping. Always check right after the reset to see what you can get to and try to take advantage of that especially if your map has changed colors.
I think the first time I did completion, I did not do any WvW and just checked to see what was free, ran in and got stuff that way. It did take a lot longer waiting for maps to rotate. The second and third times I was participating in WvW more and got quite a few areas just following the zerg. Even if WvW is not your cup of tea, following a good commander can at least make the experience enjoyable and you can get a good idea of how things get done there plus you get some loot out of it.
I think one of the funniest adventures I had was being in a zerg that took a structure, I got the POI and was getting the view when the structure flipped again and I had to run for my life. I got both and was able to get out alive. Nothing is more fun either than running past the guards in the north part of the map and into the village and grabbing the POI and then the view and running out without getting caught.
I feel for you. I hate WvW but wanted map completion. When the tournament starts, your world should be on the red, blue and green map at different times. It is STRONGLY recommended that you go get all the POI’s and vistas inside forts and keeps when your server owns a particular color. Do this for every character you think you might want map completion on some day.
Even then, expect to spend a lot of time in WvW. If you get a commander tag, people will follow you when you are tagged up. You can use this to capture towers and keeps as long as you understand the mechanics. If you can scrape together a few guild mates and the server is dead, it only takes about 4 people to take a tower (keeps and Stonemist Castle are another ball game, however).
And hey the worst that can happen is that you find you actually like WvW
