I’m new to guild wars (just picked GW2 up on a sale recently), but I’ve played WoW for a few years before, so I’m not new to MMOs. Anyway, I’ve found that I tend to like melee classes/professions, but I also like to be able to press a lot of buttons. I enjoyed playing a DK and a warrior in WoW because tanking in either offered a good amount of that. I also liked the DK because it mixed in magic. Are guardian/warrior/thief my only options if I want to just go melee mostly, or can some of the other professions mix some in as well?

Also, I don’t know how much I’ll get into PvP just yet, so I don’t really care about that much as of right now.

Thief, Warrior, Guardian, Mesmer are all viable melee choices.

Technically, Necro, Engineer, Ranger and Elementalist can also be melee, but they aren’t as melee-oriented.

I would say you should go with a guardian or warrior if you are used to warrior and DK. If you want to be more tanky guardian is better than warrior.

Guardians and warriors do look interesting, but I’ve heard there are a lot of them, so that’s why I figured I’d check if there were other options.

How are mesmers at melee? I made one, but they start out with a ranged weapon, so I wasn’t sure how it panned out when switching over to melee.

They have one of the best mitigation in melee and most builds focus around using the Sword. (Not Greatsword, but just Sword).

The reason why there are a lot of guardians is because you have more viable build options with a guardian than with most other classes. It is probably the best designed and balanced class in the game for melee.

The fact that there are a lot around means that it is accepted as a good class to play.
This is not a bad thing …

I know it’s not a bad thing that there are a lot of them, but doesn’t that mean it’s harder to find groups and guilds that want a guardian if there are so many of them or does composition diversity not matter so much in this game?

My advice is: go to the profession forums and check out some movies(youtube).

About the diversity…. nah, most guilds are interested in winning(wvw), so they would welcome another guard / ele / mesmar / whatever.
Still, play what you enjoy, not what others want.

On the contrary, despite there numbers, guardians are always in demand for dungeons and difficult open world events.

As another poster said, it is more important to play a class you enjoy. If it so happens to be a popular class, then so be it.

And yes, check out the class sub-forums. When I was looking to level an alt, one of the big deciding factors for me was the level of knowledge and atmosphere in the guardian sub-forum. It indicated a lot about the type of players who play the class.
