Hey guys, I would like some personal opinions on what you would recommend between a mesmer and a thieve. I love CC characters but I just don’t know which one I’d like more? I’m more of a kiter when it comes to PvP or WvW as well, I like to stay back and just spam continuous damage and constantly have space between me and my opponents. Also, if you do happen to recommend something, what do you think is the best weapon(s) for that class for kiting and CC gameplay? (Definitely want to be able to do PvE easily as well.) Thanks!

mesmer can’t run period, for kiting its not the right class thief is ok but if you want to do PvE easy there are better classes. i recommand ele you can either use daggers or staff there are skills to stop an enemy getting close to you and there are lot of skills like mist form or sigil of air to help you run away if things get ugly. hope this helps

by what i read…Ranger looks to be the class you’d prefer: good at range, good at melee, has cc,easy PvE thanks to pet (bears tank so kitten well).
If you choose ranger: longbow/shortbow/axe+torch and sword+warhorn/greatsword will do fine.

My opinion, anyway,is to make a characters, finish the tutorial and go to the mist: you’ll be level 80 with everything unlocked while there,so you can try everything you wish to.

btw: Thieves rely on blindness and evades to escape, you have to be very, very fast to don’t die;while mesmers rely on getting attacked and getting clones attacked.
This means that both aren’t too easy in PvE,but fine (they are really good in pvp and WvW)

Make both! :D

Mesmers have a fair amount of ways to move around and avoid hits in battle. They can hop around, create illusions (clones and phantasms), interrupt foes, apply boons and conditions, and just all around screw with the opponent. I’d say they’re probably the masters of control.
To me, it sounds like you may like using the Greatsword. One skill creates a Phantasm that cripples foes, while another is a knockback to keep foes away that get too close. Plus, its main attack deals more damage the farther your foe is from you.

Thieves, I know less about, but what I have played has told me they’re in a somewhat similar boat as Mesmers. I find they’re both fairly evasively-based professions. However, Mesmer evasion seems more defensively based while Thief’s seem more offensively based… if that makes sense. Against another player, a Mesmer would have the advantage the longer the battle, while a Thief is probably better off finishing it quickly.
As for a weapon for the Thief, I’m not sure, but Shortbow might not be a bad choice. It’s ranged, has 2 AoE skills (or 3 as the main attack shoots an arrow that bounces between enemies a couple times), a backleap that cripples, and a teleport that blinds foes where you land.

These classes seem to be based more on avoiding attacks with their skills than most, so remember to keep moving. Neither class seems particularly adept against a ton of foes, but excel 1v1.
