Mesmers - How do they work?
Miracles.
Seriously, nobody came up with that until now?
Mesmers release butterflies when they are stomped in PvP. Pretty much all I know about them.
You feel dull because you’re at 100 000ft away from the incoming mobs while you should be in front, ready to drop an Ethereal field on the incoming bunch, tank while you pop chaos armor, summon phantasm, summon clone -> leap and do your stuff after that.
edit
Meant as a joke of course ;-) nothing personal
If you mean chaos storm yay I can be useful every 30 seconds. Summon Phantasm summon clone? I assume you mean sword here since you say leap. Which phantasm, which clone? Pop chaos armor and tank ? So am I taking points in the Chaos tree here ? Do my stuff after that?
What exactly do you want someone to learn from this post?
Anyone who thinks mesmers can’t do good damage… Equip staff, 1hd sword & focus.
On a reg mob (or a bunch of mobs), auto attack, run to mob, phase retreat, run to mob again, while casting chaos storm, then switch weapon sets, cast phantasm warden, cast blurred frenzy. Anything caught in this maelstom should be dead or almost dead if some attacks missed while you are full health. If you need to retreat you have temporal curtain for swiftness & snare (can also be used for a knockdown), you have you 2 dodges, you can pop out a melee clone, or use any of you other skills you have loaded on the right side of toolbar. For Veteran mobs rinse and repeat 3 times!
For people saying you can’t handle multiple mobs… There is no law saying you need to cast all your clones and phantasms on the 1st mob you engage spread them around so they don’t all die at the same time (clones aren’t doing any real damage anyway). Make sure your using weapon swaps and skills that create combos and make sure you have some means of escape, decoy, blink, & portal are all viable.
You’re really not addressing anything by describing that we’re capable of leveling solo. I’d sure hope we could do that. You also say to phase retreat before you chaos storm. Switch the order you give yourself a free chaos armor.
The issues are Dungeons, and events with a bunch of other players. In those situations the most fun we can have is running into the horde like a lunatic with sword in hand mashing 1 and 2 and switching to staff for Chaos storm for an AoE setting. In a dungeon the warden gets stomped before it can twirl most of the time.
The problem is not our damage. The problem is our delivery system and how having more people actually makes us less fun to play
Edit: Our damage is low but i’m not worried about that. Numbers are easy to adjust it’s the mechanics that worry me.

I agree with the above. When I encounter an event that has a lot of people participating, the most I can do is auto attack, cast confusion if I manage to target something at or near full health, and drop chaos storm. Summoning phantasms is pointless because they vanish when the thing you cast it on dies. I guess I can summon up illusions while sitting in melee and blow them up but I really don’t want to do that on a squishy ranged character,
I want to play a tricky caster that causes damage by attacking my opponents mind. Not a psychopath slashing frantically at everything in front of me with imaginary friend support that explode into confetti if you get to close. You know unless someone else assists my target. Then they just vanish.

right now i am trying mesmer class out, and in my opinion this is the toughest class to play so far. mesmer is in cloth and takes a ton of damage super fast, atleast at these lower lvls. i am only 14 but imo you can get an idea of what a class is like by then if you have tried all weapon combinations and played with each for a bit. i stopped playing my elemental because he took so much dmg so quickly and i dont enjoy that sort of playstyle. i thought mesmer would be different considering all of the illusions and phantasms that you summon. but what i am finding is that mesmer pets dont take aggro from the mesmer all that much, so i am getting hit hard, especially if I want to use the 1h sword which is a fun wep for mesmer to use.
One huge problem I have with mesmer is that the illusions and phantoms only last for 1 mob, and often times they will be on a cooldown so when you have more than 1 mob (which is very often) you will not be able to use those ‘pets’ again in that fight generally after they kill the 1st mob. I think this is mesmers biggest downfall. The illusions/phantasms should last for more than 1 mob. Make them continue fighting as long as the player is still in combat. That would make the class much more bareable imo.
I dont know if I am just a total noob or what, but compared to other classes, mesmers are weak at pve leveling. They just take too much damage and pets dont take aggro, or do too much dmg imo.
Disclaimer: I am only lvl 14, but have played every other class in the game atleast a bit.
Can’t really agree with taking too much damage. We’re a little frail without a lot of our utilities but we’re hard to catch.
I had the opposite problem in that the mobs would not chase me and would instead go straight for my phantasms, you know the only way we can deal somewhat respectable damage.
Try either sword or scepter main-hand and pistol offhand use a staff as the secondary it’s far too good not to use at the moment. The duelist and Iwarlock are actually pretty great.
Everything else is spot on. Feeling like I have to spawn a phantasm at the target with full health instead of the target with 25% remaining is horrible. So is the target at full health dying at the time as the one I’m autoing down with my staff because our auto attacks are really bad. Couple this with the fact that we need to get caught for confusion to deal damage and you have a very obnoxious leveling experience. The illusions have a 3 total limit on all targets while being single target makes no sense either. They seem terrified to give us respectable long range AoE.
Chaos storm really is the only ability I enjoy using and feel that its cooldown is appropriate for its power.
I wanted to point out that I actually love my mesmer even though I post about all its faults. I felt the same way about my retribution paladin in the original release of a game that shall not be named here.
With that being said, I have not found a single playstyle/setup here that I haven’t already tried. All the tactics presented I have at least tried while leveling, most I have tried at max level in the mists.
There are truly some class mechanics that need to be tweaked for make the class feel fluid and usable. Right now, we still feel like a beta build in my opinion. I’m going to stick with the class to max PvE level because I love everything else about the class, but it gets harder and harder for me not to switch to my guardian or try other classes at higher levels.
