You promise? Well I beg to differ. Have you attempted to reach out to others? Have you joined a guild? Have you used the LFG tool?

This game isn’t going to hold your hand when it comes to grouping. That’s entirely on us as players to decide for ourselves. I would suggest making better choices.

I can tell you without a doubt in my mind that if you make the effort then you will eventually build up your friends list and you might not ever play alone again. It does take time though as I’m pretty sure that the other game you played didn’t drop you into a group right out of the gate. I’m pretty sure that it probably took you a bit of time back then to get to where you were grouping wise but might just not remember how it was when you first started playing 8 years ago.

tl;dr give it time & effort…it will come.

Just my opinion of course but I make no promises.

This sentence is false.

I can see your opinion, and I agree they need more event chains rather than isolated events. not much we can do to really change that, though.
check out gw2stuff.com, that will show you the world events that are going on. temples in particular are usually talkative and a long investment in terms of several events that all need to succeed in a row to win. usually a lot more people. they will be vocal if you are. use /map to tell people which wp to go to to help with the big events.

The game doesn’t require grouping to play, making it very solo friendly. But if you want to team with friends and guild mates it doesn’t prevent you.

It also doesn’t prevent you from tagging along with a group of soloists running from event to event or just taking the scenic tour around a zone. And since XP and loot isn’t divided and there is no “tagging” every one who helps with the kill gets full amount.

Might be the server. I hear some are quieter than others. Try guesting to other servers and see. If you find one more to your liking, you can transfer. If you delete all your characters, you can transfer for free.

I don’t think there is a need to antagonize the OP. Without knowing what server they are on it is hard to say what is going on. As a few others have stated some servers chat more than others. Also the OP mentioned that many come together for events but depending on the event this doesn’t always = more chat. A good litmus test I would think would be to go to Queensdale where a pretty steady amount of player are and chat is fairly regular especially when waiting for the boar to spawn. In most cases it is not uncommon to see less players in medium level zones.

To the OP I would suggest that you guest to Tarnished Coast if you are not already there and in you are on NA servers. Have a look around and see if you notice a difference. If not there then try guesting to other servers as well. Also as others mentioned try to find a good guild of like minded players. This can enhance your communication with other players dramatically.

I am going to guess you a very low level and not in a guild. Because honestly, it reads to me as if you do not have experience enough to know what your talking about.

Secondly, I have to ask, if it is not an online game how does WvW works since it is hundreds of players from three different servers?

I mean when I am on seeing hundreds of players battling it out for keeps and camps, I am angered to even read your post.

I’m not sure if all servers are the same, but on mine all the starter areas are largely empty except for the human one (Queensdale). If you go to that one you can usually find people doing the champion train. It’s a pretty tedious way to level but if you want some interaction that’s the most reliable way to find it at low levels.

One thing to bear in mind is that it’s not easy to talk and fight at the same time in this game. It’s not really worth the effort just to try and start random conversations with strangers.

But on my server at least if someone asks a question or makes a comment in map chat they will get at least one reply and in the more populated maps there’s always some chatter going on. Even when I think I’m alone I can say something and get a response.

If you want regular conversation though joining a guild is definitely the way to go.

The game itself doesn’t lend itself well to conversation, at least not when out in the world doing stuff.

Combat is fast-paced and twitch, which makes it hard to talk to people at the same time (at least with in-game chat, voice chat programs are a different matter). There’s also the fact chatting and combat are literally mutually exclusive (when you’re in “chat mode” you can’t activate combat skills or move).

Enemies respawn so fast that you rarely have time to talk between encounters either. You can talk a bit, but try to have a whole conversation and you’ll probably find yourself getting swarmed by respawned enemies.

Even talking while auto-running is tricky since you need to actively avoid enemies or else you’ll get hit and put into combat, slowing you down and making you succeptible to more enemies.

Rumeli, I’m a new player as well and I am totally with you on this!! I’m like uhhh what wasall this hype about GW2? I’ve also noticed most GW2 players have not played other MMOs that I run into and seem to think games like WoW suck but in my opinion it is WAY MORE diverse than GW2 and is way more social. GW2 feels like a single player game and not a good one at that. But I’m gonna give it a few more weeks and see what happens. Can’t believe it cost me $60 bucks so far!

Also have you noticed that there is no weapon or armor differences at lower levels? All the green and blues are all that same with same stats! It’s like I wanted to look at other 1h axes but there isnt any! Well 2. I’m now level 20 and still scratchin’ my head wondering wth is the hype about. I get the “you gotta try wvw dude” and I will but I’m not holding my breath for that either because, well I play other MMOs that do that too and am looking for something different, not something of more the same. Anyway not really knockin GW2 just sayin;. And yes I’m gonna give it a couple more weeks. But I’m pretty sure most GW2 players have never been outside of this game. Or are jaded by something in another MMO they played.

My experience with sociability has been the complete opposite. In GW1 and GW2 I feel like I can chat to almost anyone I meet. Or at least ask them questions or for help.

When I did a free trial of WoW it took me about 2 hours to meet another player and then our conversation went like this:
Me: Hi
Them: [silence]
Me: Hello?
Them: Plz leave

I later learned that just by being near them I could accidentally steal their kills and experience and in lower level zones you should apparently avoid going near other people at all costs. I was also told I shouldn’t be speaking in towns unless I have something to sell and I wouldn’t have anything worth selling until level 40. Really nice, sociable atmosphere…

I don’t know, maybe it was the server I chose, maybe it was a bad day. Whatever the reason it really didn’t give me a good impression or encourage me to stick with the game. (Admittedly it wasn’t likely I would anyway, my reasons for not playing WoW go all the way back to WC3 and I won’t bore anyone with them here.)

But having learned more about it I think I’m glad I didn’t. I love that this game only has 6 tiers of equipment, 4 of which you’ll go through while levelling up, and that all the gear within a tier has equal stats because it makes getting the equipment you need much quicker and easier and means I can focus on what I want to do, instead of what I have to do to get gear so I can start working on getting the next set.

Likewise no kill stealing, no open-world PvP (and therefore no roaming bands of PKers), drop in and out ‘questing’ (in the form of events), relatively easy to reach level cap, no distinct end-game….there are a lot of things GW2 does differently to WoW and most other MMOs and whilst there are people who like those things and probably miss them or can’t imagine why they’re “missing” from this game there are also a lot of people who are very happy to find a game without them.

I think that’s why it seems to attract a lot of people who don’t play other MMOs. It’s not that we don’t know they exist, or don’t know what we’re “missing” by not playing them. It’s that we know exactly what is and is not in them and something about it has always put us off, but GW2 finally offers a game without those things.

No real reason to chat in GW2 it seems being you don’t need other class help. Nor do you have to chat about specs or armor and such as there is not much variety. In other MMOs it was nice to talk about different specs and armor enchantments and where loot was obtained as well as make friends of various classes for help. None of this is needed in GW2 and it’s just a very very simple linear MMO.

As a minor theorycrafter and boss soloist, I chat daily about all of the things you’ve mentioned with both friends and strangers, and have helped (both over the forums, in Reddit, and in-game) numerous players with their classes and with transitioning to the combat of GW2 from the combat of other games. With every LS that comes out, I switch on /map and get to work directing people and answering their questions about which NPC to turn in what item to, where LS-specific events can be found, and where they need to look to find things for an achievement. Having been around since the game came out, I can say GW2 is hardly simple nor linear.

Though I may sound caustic, you’ve hardly scratched the surface of the game. It feels like you came into GW2 already determined to hate it because it isn’t WoW, when a major selling point of the game is that it’s an anti-WoW. If that’s so, you’re better off dropping GW2, asking for a refund, and playing something you actually like. Nothing wrong with having different tastes, just realize that not everyone will share them and that not all games will be tailored to them. That’s not an attack- just the best course of action, one that’ll make you happier than lingering around and complaining.

To the OP: It’s a matter of keeping your ears open and putting yourself out there. Help people out if you see them calling for help, involve yourself in /map when the chat is nice, join a talkative guild, and when you’re experienced yourself, hang around helping or just shooting the breeze with newer players.

I, too, came to GW2 alone, not knowing anyone or knowing how to talk to anyone. Over a year later, I have a close-knit group of friends, who I all know and call by their real names. We’ve given each other materials for legendaries without asking a copper back, four-manned and three-manned dungeons, and minizerged map completion together on our alts. I also have a range of acquaintances who I can chat with if I ever feel the need to, and some new players who have taken me up on my offers to help and PM me with questions or to chat. I assist two guilds with guild missions and get requested to help with runs by another guild I’m on friendly terms with, despite not being a member. Outside of that, I often jump into /map when it’s friendly and just chat about whatever with whoever’s on.

This didn’t all fall into place automatically. I said hello to people when they logged on, made a point of welcoming newbies and offering help (two of my close friends were actually new players I ran across and helped), teleported across the zone (or world) to help people with vistas and skill points, ran around as my mesmer portalling people through jumping puzzles. I also worked to improve myself as a player so I could give better advice and hold my own in dungeons, and be a tap rather than a bucket in groups. I let people know that I was always glad to talk to them and help them, that they were free to talk about whatever with me, and that I wouldn’t bite their faces off if they liked cats better than dogs.

As with all MMOs, building a social base takes time, and you’re going to be lonely at first. But it is definitely not impossible, especially not in GW2. It’s just a matter of work- keeping your ears open, making yourself into the kind of person people want to know, and putting yourself out there.

I think you’re confusing two different aspects of armor specs.

In GW2 there are not many tiers – you won’t need to upgrade to more powerful armor many times (probably only once or twice at level 80, depending on if you want to get ascended armor when it comes out).

But there are many different stat combinations your armor can have. At level 80 every piece of armor gives boosts to 3 different stats, in addition to it’s defense rating. On top of that each piece can be upgraded with a wide range of items that can boost up to 3 additional stats or give extra effects.

There are a huge number of ways they can be combined, and even more when you factor your trait points into it (which also boost your stats, so you should really consider the two together). Obviously not every possible combination results in a viable build, but there are a lot that do.

If you think no one ever discusses stats or armor specs in this game, or that there’s no reason to do so, I strongly recommend checking out the build discussions in the various professions sections of the forum.

Likewise I think you’ve misunderstood the lack of trinity. You don’t need specific classes to help – you will never be stuck waiting to do a dungeon because you can’t do it without an elementalist and everyone there is playing guardians and warriors for example. But there is content that can’t be done alone – dungeons in particular (and obviously WvW and sPvP) but also some open-world events. People can and do play together in groups on a regular basis. Even some stuff that can be done alone is better with other people around and people will often group up for it. Either literally by using the group function or simply by agreeing to work together.

Queen’s Gauntlet and Twilight Assault had the best environment for social interaction IMO. In the Gauntlet, you would have to wait your turn but you didn’t want to do anything else because you’d lose your place in queue. That gives you time to chat.

Then with Twilight Assault, it took a little bit of teamwork to get things done. Whether it was rewarding or penalizing doesn’t matter. It was a shared experience and an excuse to grow your friends list.

This stuff isn’t rocket science. It’s just like WoW vanilla. An eight-hour BRD run would of achieved the same thing. Or just waiting on a gryphon flying you to the dungeon. But if you remove all the time-sinks or moderately difficult content, you’re not going to have time to chat or experience content together because your brain is geared to do as many things as possible before your mother grabs a broom and pries you away from the keyboard.

There has to be a journey if you want to meet others along the way. If it’s only going to be about destination, then best bring your inner-circle of friends with you.
