Funny question
What type of weapons is most used? Ie. across all professions&builds what kind of weapon is most frequently used? I did play only 3 chars enough to be able to say and rest is bit fuzzy for me… but from what I know top 3 would be like this:

1) 1h sword
2) staff
3) GS

But please correct me if I am wrong.
I am asking this because as alt-oholic I want to craft my next legendary usable on chars I have not even created yet

“Most usable” and “most effectively used” are different things. For the former, you can look at the wiki:

I’d personally put staff ahead of sword.

In my opinion staff would probably be the most effectively used of the three you listed, followed by GS and then 1h sword. I use staff as a main part of my ele playing, as a ranged option on my necro, for farming on my guardian, and as my second set on my revenant. Staff is also used by ranger with the druid elite spec, as well as for the thief daredevil elite spec.

As for 1h sword, I really only use this regularly on my mesmer (both as main hand and offhand), ranger, revenant, and sometimes on my thief.

In terms of the number of professions that can use them (and counting elite specialisations) the staff and spear are joint first, with 7 professions each. Sword is second with 6 and shield and greatsword are joint 3rd with 5.

It’s hard to say which are actually the most widely used because that’s much more complicated and subject to opinion. Even if you look up builds and see how many use each weapon there’s likely to be other sites with different builds, and the vast majority of players probably don’t look at any of them.

But unless you always copy builds from websites I also don’t think that’s a good way to decide which legendary to make. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of ranger builds for greatsword, but I don’t like the skills so I never use it on my ranger. Therefore making a legendary greatsword would be a complete waste of time and money for me, no matter how widely used it is.

There’s also character design to think about. I have 5 characters who use a sword but Bolt doesn’t suit any of them, so again it’d be a waste of money for me to get it. That may not be a concern for you, but it’s something to consider.

That is actually what I meant – there are combinations which exist but are not used at all or in some niche builds – and as I do not know all professions is why I ask this

That is also my problem – aside of Eternity which is IMHO the best looking legendary in game – I like most Astralaria, Meteorologist and H.O.P.E …. and unfortunately I simply do not have char/build which would use any of these… :/

As my next choice is Nevermore – like the design but do not love it – which I have a great usage for on at least 2 of my current chars and 2 which I can see myself playing. And as I do not like Bifrost much….

That’s the main reason I’ve not made more legendaries. My first one was easy because my favourite is The Dreamer and my main is a ranger who uses a short bow and wears a lot of purple.

After that I got stuck because none of the weapons I like are ones my characters use. I finally settled on The Bifrost because although it’s not perfect for any of them it’s a good fit for a few.

I was struggling with decision if I should go for Nevermore or not… even did first step of collection… but now I have decided to shelf it – I do not like it that much. I really wanted to do gen2 legendary, but unfortunately only one I really like has zero use for me and the one I have use for does not have the vibe…

So I have decided to do another Tyria exploration and craft myself one of the old ones – I really like Bolt so here is decision quite easy. And Bolt will really fit my Mesmer

Bolt is a good choice. I’m sure you’ll be happy with it.

In case others are still worried about this, it’s a really personal question. There are a lot of profs that use Staff, but Bifrost and Nevermore fit caster tropes better than melee, plus Bifrost is a very subtle legendary and so doesn’t appeal to those of us looking for some ‘flash’.

In other words, on an objective basis, Staff is the most ‘useful’ but on a personal basis, I wouldn’t use either legendary for a Daredevil or Revenant (and I’m not all that enthused for any sort of Asura).
