Does anyone know if you can run the game client multiple times on the same computer? More importantly, can you be logged into the same account from two different machines/clients at the same time?

My safe assumption is that this is restricted, as that would allow one person to “share” his account with multiple individuals in theory. If I re-run the gw2.exe my client launches back up from the existing window.

I just want to farm mats with one toon (in say a low level area) inbetween action with my main.

Running multiple clients on the same computer at the same time? Sounds like a botter to me…

I knew someone would say that, and NO, I do not bot nor exploit nor run cheats. I have always done my best help help those who do get caught/punished. It ruins games when people do this. I used to run 3 clients in EVE and mine minerals with all 3. Just had to buy 3 accounts. Which I suppose I could do in GW2, but would only do so if I could transfer my alts to them, which I don’t think is an option.

Even though has been answered already:

Two more possibilities:

1. Running the game without 3rd party applications such as running a second copy of the game’s files from different windows user accounts (I know that in GW1 and other games this is possible). No 3rd party software is needed for this.

2. This probably will get a straight no but I’ll ask just the same. VMware or virtual machines in general. Before shouting “3rd Party App” I’d like to mention that this doesn’t tamper with the game’s files in anyway.

It would be great if a Mod or even better, an ANet rep confirms these 2 questions.

I’d like to add that I DID read the link posted by UKNightWatch, and disagree with the mod’s “Multiboxing is very similar to botting”.

Don’t take in a hostile or the wrong way. I’m asking these especially because in GW1 multiboxing is allowed to this day and I wonder why not GW2.

I understand it’s a new game, botters and gold sellers will try to make their best before the game gets old and all the reasons. (probably answered the above question here myself.)

The reason I’m asking here is because in the future I may want to buy a second copy of the game but I don’t have the budget or need for a second machine and being able to run both accounts at the same time would be convenient.

TBH I don’t think it’s unfair for someone to be able to run 2 copies he legally and fairly paid for on the same pc.

Yeah! I originally asked about multi boxing in another thread as a friend was asking me if it was allowed. As much as we may disagree with why the mod said no to multi boxing, the mod has given a direct answer and this is now (seemingly) the official stance of AN.

I will not multi box any game as I simply do not like doing it! For those that have considered MB in GW2, I would suggest following the stance shown and NOT multi box.

As of Jan 23rd Multiboxing is not allowed in any form.
You can’t run the two clients on one computer.
You can login to the same account twice but only can have one charaters in game.

I would open two accounts as I use my second account as my banker to hold items ect…

The key words there are “on each account.” The OP was asking about simultaneously playing multiple characters from the same account, which is different.

It’s also specifically impossible, so even if he wanted to, and tried to, he couldn’t.

However, two accounts on the same PC, separate PCs, or through a virtual machine are technically functional and allowed barring the control of two clients through a single input (as in key press or mouse click).

Make no mistake those guys you see using third party programs are only interested in stealing your account.

Since that would have never worked to begin with I simply assumed he stated it wrong. And since it’s impossible to log into the same account twice at the same time then using that linked post was pointless as well since it clearly talks about controlling multiple characters from multiple accounts.

Multi-boxing is a unofficial term and can be used to desribe different processes (but most negative and not allowed).
You are not allowed/technical restricted to be logged in with the same account twice.
You are allowed to run separate clients on the same computer at the same time, cause of the first restriction, it has to be two separate accounts..

At any time for multiboxing and botting the rule is: 1 Keystroke = 1 action
So you are not allowed to control two characters at the same time by copying keystrokes.

So to answer the OP’s question. I think you want to go afk with one character (for example, guarding your spot in lornar pass for the marionette) and farm with a different character at the same time.

This is allowed and possible if the characters are on different accounts.

BTW: this has also been the rule in GW1. nothing has changed.
