I played years ago on Sea of Sorrows. Now my kids have joined.

Sea of Sorrows was full, so they started on a different server (Gate of Madness). I figured I’d jump onto that server and make a new character at level 1 to play with them.

But that doesn’t seem possible.

I can see there’s a guest option, and we can perhaps party-up for PvE, but they’re keen to do WvW (almost certainly terribly, but hey, it’s the thought that counts).

Short of transferring my account at the cost of gems, or starting a new account (and buying the expansion on top of that), is there a way we can play together?

You’ll be able to play together in PvE and PvP since you guys are on NA servers. No need to guest as GW2 uses megaservers to aggregate everyone together. WvW can’t though.

To transfer servers, in addition to what you’ve mentioned, an account without characters can transfer for free, meaning you have to delete all your existing characters. You could get lucky with a F2P account, but those get allocated servers randomly.

Yeah, given the cost of transferring, which would still leave me with a core account (and my kids with the expansion each, since they’re dead keen to play WvW) I think I’ll just create a new account on that server and upgrade it to the HoT expansion. For all three of us, it’ll be $90, which is pretty kitten painful… but hey, they deserve money. They made a good game.

Remember that you can convert gold to gems to pay for the transfer, then you could transfer just your account to their server.
There’s really nothing absolutely necessary for WvW in HoT, so you could hold off on upgrading your account for a little while, to spread out the cost.

I would go for path of fire+hot instead for 50 bucks mate.

Yeah the HoT and PoF bundle also includes the Core game for that same price.
