If you change the name of one of your characters will his/her old name be ‘saved’???

When you delete a character, the names is sorta saved or held for your account. That way, you have a chance to recreate and keep it without the worry of having it be taken by another player. I was wondering if name changes work the same way. Thanks! (o:

Impossible to know. But if you do it, why not create immediately a placeholder character? The chances of someone taking it within 2 minutes are very slim, though of course it is possible.

I’m not sure if it is still this way but my friend bought an account and put his fav name on it then fell in love with the game so bought deluxe edition and gave his regular edition to his girlfriend. He wanted his name so he had her delete his first character so that he could use the name on his deluxe version. He could not. The name was still reserved for the first account even after deleting the character.

Names are reserved for you account till (atleast) 24 hours after character deletion. Same is very! likely the case for abanded names through name change. So yes indeed, you don’t need to rush, you have 24 hours

I think it works exactly the same as deleting the character. I haven’t tested it but I would have thought Anet would have explained it if it worked differently.

Also it’s easier for them to use the existing system than make a whole new one for no real reason.

So most likely however you do it once you stop using a name it’s reserved for 24 hours, meaning only that one account can use it. After that anyone can use it.
