Hello everyone,

I am curious: Who is generating the narrative texts that are spammed frequently in text chat (colored grey)?

For some reason (probably because I am on a German server), I am receiving them in German. They are full of grammar and punctuation errors and are annoying the hell out of me.

How can I deactivate it?

Thanks in advance.

It’s role players using the /me emote. Just click the down arrow beside your chat tab, and deselect emotes if you want to hide them.

Ohhh, okay. Thank you!

Too bad it is hiding all emotes now, but those lengthy texts in bad German were killing me.

You could create two tabs, where the only difference is one has emotes, the other doesn’t. That way you can easily turn emotes on or off by switching tabs depending on if there are people role-playing near you or not.

Nah, but thanks for the suggestion. Too many tabs already.

You know, I wonder why people are even allowed to spam the chat like that. This is an online game no fan fiction platform. I am a pen & paper role-player myself, but this is just ridiculous.

mustn’t …. mustn’t … mustn’t …. will power failing …

MMO RP G. RP. You wonder why thousands of people are “allowed” to tell their own stories against the backdrop of the world of Tyria? Yes, sometimes it’s drivel, sometimes it’s badly written, sometimes it’s even offensive. And sometimes it’s the grand epic tale that brings the game to life for the players, invests them in their characters and in the game itself, and keeps them playing for years.

It’s an online RP game. If you don’t like it you can close your ears as suggested above, but asking for the creative storytelling voices to be muzzled for thousands to spare you alone from having to deal with grammar issues is the outside of enough.

Why are people allowed to ‘spam’ chat with discussions on PvP mechanics in PvE zones? Or debates over who will ‘win’ in Game of Thrones? Or opinions on the best way to make money through crafting? Or any other topic I don’t personally find interesting?

Because it’s an MMO – a social game and the ability to chat to other players is an integral part of that. Beyond basic rules to keep it civil it shouldn’t be up to Anet to decide what people are allowed to talk about.

(And although I don’t participate myself I’d actually argue that role playing is a more valid use of chat in a role playing game than talking about TV shows.)

For most people role players using the emote channel is a good compromise. At other times all you’ll get in it is an endless list of players sitting, dancing, sleeping etc. (usually the same one or two over and over and over again) so it’s not a big deal for most players to turn it off. And since it’s not used for other conversations role players don’t have to try and decipher whether the random person saying “Yes” in the middle of a conversation was responding to them or something someone else said 5 minutes ago.
