Hey guys
I’ve recently hit 30 with my ranger; looking to roll another toon because ranger just isn’t for me.

Necro and Engi classes have caught my eye and I wanted to know the pros and cons for each class

Also, what are some standard builds for each class?

EDIT: I’m also thinking about rolling an ele, but haven’t been reading many positive things about the class <_<

I haven’t made a necro for personal reasons, but as I understand it is a very different class then in GW1. You use minions as tanks and for the rest your mainly a condition spammer. The damage output is very nice and the survivability is good.

Ele’s is my first character and they are very very squishy. They do however make it up with loads of damage.

Engineer is my second love and my biggest. They are the special ops in gw2. They can do virtually anything reasonable ok and good. High damage, good support, loads of conditions, fulling pve with stationary tanks, etc. The main problem with the engineer is that it can do soo much, but you need to specialise (atleast before the fight) and it takes time to unlock and know all the turrets. kits and possibillity’s.

You are asking bout builds. I would highly recommend looking outsaide this forum for it. some external websites specialise on it. But more important I would advise not to go there and find it out your own. A character need to be made your own. some general builds are nice, but it doesn’t make too much difference and it requires a special playstyle.

To really assist you in your quest I would ask you to tell what you dislike bout the ranger and what you hope to find in the necro, engineer or ele.

Never tried Engi, but I did try Necro. It was fun for about 20 levels, but I got tired of pets dying to fast and/or not attacking. I made a Ranger after (still wanted a better class), though tempted to try my Necro again, just learning how to play w/o pets.

Ele was my 1st character, and I loooooved fire. But you get elements instead of weapon sets, and I just SUCK at swapping elements…I’d always hit the wrong one.

It’s just i feel ranger is a bit underwhelming; my pet dies very quick, and i just don’t put out that much damage to compensate. I play a condition build, so i lay a lot of traps/ use shortbow and axe/warhorn.

Maybe i need to stick with her a bit more, i dunno

Konmai> what pets are you using? I use a Murellow for my tank/aoe, and switch to a Lynx for damage. The Lynx looses health way faster, because it’s not built for it.

My pets don’t feel underwhelming, the Murellow can take a lot of damage (hit vit), aoe poison, and self regen. In events I love to drop 2 traps, his aoe, and entangle.

My weaps are usually sb, and axe/axe (was axe/torch).

Where can i find the pets you’re talking about?

If you think that ranger lacks damage and a pet that dies too often, you will find all three classes you are investigating less.

Ele’s are very very very squishy. A mob onbly needs to look angry at them and they die. So you need to be very quick to avoid being killed.

Necro’s have pets to compensate the squishyness. but you have less control over the pets and they die sooner.

Engineers are special opps. They need a lot more tactics to play well.

I think you should either stick to the ranger longer or switch to an even easier profession like the warrior. Warrior and ranger are the classes that are the easiest to play.

My main character is a necro, I started with a warrior and I have found that the necro is way better. You get marks which are VERY useful as they put different conditions and stuff on enemies. The minions are not terrible, if you need more things attacking they are good, they are also good to draw enemy fire as NPR enemies go for the guy who is closest. It is a very fun class

Doing something with stupid results is not stupid if the results were intended to be stupid.

Are you making use of the pet swap mechanic? You can have two pets equipped and only one active, but you can change between them anytime. Doing so restores both pets’ health to full, so if one pet goes down in battle, change to the other.

Also, I feel obliged to mention that elementalists are only extremely squishy in PvE if you build a glass cannon and neglect to dodge or switch attunements. I started off as a staff elementalist with all my points in fire, and yeah, I died every time a mob got in melee range of me. I respecced recently to 10/12/10 in earth/water/arcana and started using dual daggers, however, and now I’m capable of soloing most world PvE content. For instance, just a few days ago, I soloed a champion to 40% health before another player, a warrior, came in. He ran in headfirst and died. Came back, died again. It’s all about knowing the class- granted, you still have to be quick on your feet and think/plan a lot to survive as ele, but that’s part of what makes the class enjoyable, I feel.

I played them both when trying to pick a profession and I stuck with the Necro. The Necro felt more easily versatile. I actually don’t play with minions as their AI needs adjusting. I leveled into the 40s stacking condition stats and then I have transitioned over to a power/precision build now.

I love the survivability of the Necromancer. The AoE heal combined with Life Siphon and either Spectral Armor or Shadow Walk make self healing a breeze.

Staff for ranged, dagger/warhorn for melee.
