You can buy a full set of exotic armor with karma from the temples in Orr. Different temples have different stats but they all cost the same 42k karma per piece, 252k karma for a full set. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Temple_armor
If you don’t want to do that, you can get exotic armor and weapons from running dungeons. Either speak to your guild or check the Looking For Group tab for a group that says everyone welcome. Dungeon vendors are in Lions Arch. A double row of merchants on the east side, near the trading post over there. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeon_armor

If you still want to craft, or just want gold, dungeons are a good source of gold. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeons
Or you can run dungeons and buy your gear from the trading post, which is probably cheaper than crafting. You can sell the mats in your bank you would have used to craft to make some additional gold.

At level 80 your best options are probably either to do dungeons or go to The Silverwastes and do the meta-event chain. Neither of which requires the best equipment.
You can also get armor from World vs. World using badges of honour, which you might have gotten from achievement chests even if you’ve never played WvW.
Also remember that you can mix and match equipment from different places. So you could buy some with dungeon tokens, some with gold and some with karma for example, if you don’t have enough of 1 currency.

While I understand the desire to do so, my experience has been that leveling crafting to make your own gear is a guaranteed way to stay poor for a very long time on your first character.
Crafting shines at higher levels where there are “once per day” material refinements and very expensive gear that can only be self-crafted. For almost everything else, you either lose money every time you make something or just break even compared to selling the raw materials and buying what you wanted.
My advice? Get your first set of gear from dungeons, world bosses, the orr temple vendors, the silverwastes, world vs world badges, laurels, etc. Sell everything you don’t use for gold and buy whatever you still need to get. Selling 4-5 miscellaneous yellow rares on the TP will get you a gold. 4 to 8 gold will buy you most basic exotics. Once you are fully geared up in exotics, then start plowing money into leveling crafting so you can make ascended gear and also exotics for any future characters you make.
thanks for the tips guys
Your first character, if you play it that way, will suck your bank dry. As others have said, collect tokens to get your first set of armour. My very first set of exotic armour was the karma set from Orr. I still have that too. Once I got that, I amassed my collections of materials and worked on my first two crafting professions. Don’t do Armorsmith and Weaponsmith together. They both use common crafting materials early so you’ll burn up your mats even faster. Jeweler is a better option. Once you get past the copper / bronze stages, jeweler uses silver while weaponsmith uses iron. At this stage, you’ll find it easier to manage your stocks until you reach Platinum and darksteel, but that stuff is so plentiful you shouldn’t run out easily.
I got my first armor set from the temples in Orr as well. Fortunately I level slowly, so by the time I got to level 80 I had plenty of karma and the most time-consuming part was getting to the temple. After that I started working on getting skins I liked.
I’ve still only made 1 ascended piece, and that was the medium coat because I like the skin (especially the fact that it’s not a trench coat).

Running dungeons daily helps, like ac, which provides 1 gold 50 silver for the path along with exp and another 25 or so silver, that’s over 3 gold for doing two paths a day in that event. Selling some of the loot bags you gain in world helps as well, example being moldy sacks you get from orrian mobs. If you amass more currency then you need or no longer need such as for a dungeon, you can always spend say ac tears from ascalonian catacombs for the armor that costs 180 then salvage it for ectoplasms and possible insignia drops which sell for good coin.
There is also karma conversions like orrian jewelry boxes which you can spend karma on to get its junk loot for coin and sell any valuable drops.
Another good tip is don’t salvage all the rare drops you get, rares that are lvl 75+ sell for decent pocket silver and adds up when you sell multiple. So if you spend your gold wisely and do certain things frequently to earn coin you will start getting a better income in game.
Regard others as you would normally, the internet is not justification for mistreating others
Also world boss give you a rare once a day. You can salvage that for ectos and sell them on the trading post.
Be aware armor or weapons you purchase with karma or badges usually can not be salvaged or Forged so don’t put expensive runes or sigils in them.
Karma gear can be put in the Mystic Forge, it just can’t be salvaged or sold.
